To ask if Denby chips ?

We currently have IKEA plates, bowls etc.
Perfectly adequate, reasonable price. Couldn't afford to pay more at the time. But they've accumulated chips over the last 3 years.
Should I invest in a set of Denby (or similar) or will that chip too , in which case I might as well save the £££ and buy IKEA ?

My Denby is approx 40 years old, used every day and no chips.
We don't have a dishwasher though - no idea if that makes a difference.
It will break if dropped from a great height, but don't we all?
No idea if modern Denby is as robust.

UpstartCrow · 23/01/2018 20:00

Denby doesn't chip ime, but its heavy compared to bone china.
What happened to unbreakable china?

wijjy · 23/01/2018 20:06

It chips, but you have to hit it pretty hard. We have three kids and have used it solidly for more than 15 years. We have chipped one plate and one side plate in that time.

Coulddowithanap · 23/01/2018 20:16

We are quite a clumsy family have have only managed to break 3 bowls and a mug, quite surprising really considering how many times they've been dropped!

Mine is 12 years old and going strong (wedding present so easy to date!). But stone floors + denby (or anything else) don't mix, so we have lost a few pieces over the years and I'm positive we lost 6 plates in a house move (how???).

I would definitely buy again.

Theimpossiblegirl · 23/01/2018 20:49

DH has chipped one of my Denby bowls (grrr).

astoundedgoat · 23/01/2018 20:50

Oh - if you do buy, get one of the "classic" collections they've been doing for years - Imperial Blue, for instance (which I have), because then you can always get replacement items from them.

Cautionary tale: my parents loved mine, and spotted a random set on sale in a department store (ugly as sin) and of COURSE it was discounted because it was discontinued, so now my Dad can't get replacement bits for it.

Equally, when the duck egg blue colourway came out (before I got my Imperial Blue set) I bought a full tea set (intending to expand to dinner over the years) and they bloody discontinued it.

astoundedgoat · 23/01/2018 20:51

I'd love some ramekins. #jealous

20 year old Denby, the odd chip here and there.

mrsBeverleyGoldberg · 23/01/2018 20:52

Yes.

Majuna · 23/01/2018 20:52

My bowls and plates have, but they go in the dishwasher.

RandomMess · 23/01/2018 21:00

Hated mine!!! Went back to ikea a good there thin glassware food stays piping hot and fits in dishwasher better!

SharonBottsPoundOfGrapes · 23/01/2018 21:09

I won a portmerion set on here a few years ago (6 or 7?) It's still going strong.

ShinyMe · 23/01/2018 21:18

Surely anything will chip if you treat it roughly, and anything can last forever it you look after it?

I have a set of French plates that were my granny's. They're nothing fancy, but I like them because they remind me of her. She bought them in the 50s and used them for decades, then she gave them to me when I bought my house and I use them every day and have done for nearly 20 years with no chips or breaks.

AgnesBrownsCat · 23/01/2018 21:19

Ive had my denby since 2013 . Only a couple of items have chips and probably caused by tapping one off the other in the dishwasher . Their website often has good deals and you can use your Tesco vouchers towards them .I once bought about 10 pasta bowls half price and used Tesco vouchers to pay for them so essentially paid nothing .

mirime · 23/01/2018 21:20

@TheKnackeredChef

My mum has had Denby for years. She dropped a mug once and it broke the floor tile. The mug was good as new.

That happened to me but it was a side plate. Denby everyday as well, so not the more expensive stuff.

Don't get the really cheap made in China Denby, it chips really easily, had a set because it was cheap, but it was horrible, we had less of it left in half the time than the Denby everyday.

Funnily enough just bought a new set from Ikea. Don't think there's any point having a nice set until DS is older.

fiorentina · 23/01/2018 21:20

I have Denby white and it’s chipped but I’ve replaced from the outlet shop in Portsmouth, as it’s no longer in dept stores. My parents had a set of a different design which Mum grew to hate but it was indestructible!

MrsMaxwell · 23/01/2018 21:21

I expect my kids would be able to chip it.

Every time they unload the dishwasher is sounds like they are trying to smash up every plate in the house.

Wolfiefan · 23/01/2018 21:25

We have had a couple of bits chip.
There are a few outlet places around. We have bought at Gloucester and Swindon too.

Mummaofboys · 23/01/2018 21:25

Everything chips, apart from paper plates

expatmigrant · 23/01/2018 21:37

My Blue Denby is over 20 years old and I've had one plate chip apart from stuff that was dropped. But no idea if the newer designs are as good.

Sixgeese · 23/01/2018 21:41

My DM has a Denby Ode set, it was a wedding present in 1969, no chips at all. It's only used once a week though not everyday.

DropZoneOne · 23/01/2018 21:43

Ours is 14 years old and is a mix of seconds and full-price. We've replaced a few things that had chips - 3 plates out of 18, 2 bowls (they were dropped so cracked but didn't break), 3 or 4 cups - but it's our everyday crockery, not saved for best, goes in the dishwasher and is handled by clumsy husband. As an example, he has managed to break 4 tumblers in 12 months just by washing them up. I think the Denby is holding up pretty well under the circumstances!

Since 2003 not 2013
