You can change gender, change your hair type and change race!

I identify as Japanese because "I can't wait to go to Japan because I hear the food is tasty".

Actually, if I'm thinking about this, I want to be identified as a cat. I like the idea of sleeping, getting fed and scratching people when they fuck me off.

Seriously though, WTAF?

My kids are mixed race and identify as black although most people assume they are Italian, particularly my daughter.

PeacefulBlessing · 23/01/2018 16:47

They are allowed to identify as black if they actually are... it's not really what's being discussed.

Mogginthemog · 23/01/2018 17:00

taskmaster wow. Never knew that. Surely that’s positive discrimination?

wakemeupbefore · 23/01/2018 17:08

Absolutely brilliant! Gives a new meaning to 'animal - mineral - vegetable'
game.... I can see a passport control barking that at airports.Grin
Currently I am identifying a a lemon, the slice floating in my lovely gin & tonic to be precise.

Bear - shall identify as bear tomorrow for hibernation purposes you see.

MiddleClassProblem · 23/01/2018 17:10

Identifying with a culture isn’t the same as identifying as a skin tone. Black covers a whole manner of cultures. Just because you are drawn to something, raised around a dominant culture other than “your own” or are attracted to something doesn’t mean you think you are that skin colour. To me those are two separate things. You identify with western black culture, perhaps?

If someone told me they indemnified as brown I wouldn’t know what that means. As a “brown” there’s a whole rang of cultures and ideas in my own family let alone the world over. Culturally I have more in common with a white, middle class, Londoner than a brown, middle class from Bangalore, yet I look like the latter but I have a hand in both cultures but skin tone wise “brown” as we are referred to it’s a very different thing. I know what it’s like to be treated differently because of my skin both negatively and positively. Equallly I don’t have a clue about half of other brown cultures such as Pakistani, Iranian, Egyptian etc. Because brown is vast.

It’s all very complicated. I don’t understand it but the things we do/wear/act/believe/celebrate etc isn’t set to colour. That’s what I mean. So I’m not sure how you can identify as a colour when it covers so many different attitudes.

EggsonHeads · 23/01/2018 17:13

It's actually easier to change your gender than to become Japanese-the citizenship process is rather intense.

MiddleClassProblem · 23/01/2018 17:14

Sorry that was a lot of waffle as I think I even confused myself in the middle

PeacefulBlessing · 23/01/2018 17:16

MiddleClasProblem

You have just perfectly articulated the problem with men who 'identify' as the homogenous 'women'

PeacefulBlessing · 23/01/2018 17:18

What I mean is, the person in that article doesn't appear to have given any consideration to Black culture or which particular 'Black' she is identifying with.

It's all about appearance and the superficial.

If I identify as Mediterranean, will that stop me getting sunburned?

Mulberry72 · 23/01/2018 17:21

I actually (for once) have no words......

PeacefulBlessing · 23/01/2018 17:24

If I identify as Mediterranean, will that stop me getting sunburned?

No, but I think it means you can have a nap at work in the afternoon and that time is protected...

Fekko · 23/01/2018 17:26

Coool!

PeacefulBlessing · 23/01/2018 17:56

@FluffyWuffy100

Actually, I think trans-animate sounds like it could be a thing...

Chesntoots · 23/01/2018 18:05

That YouTube video was one of the best things I have seen in a long time.

I love how people tied themselves up in knots to "say the right thing" even when they realised they were making a right twat of themselves.

Fekko · 23/01/2018 18:07

There was a woman who said she was a cat...

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/howaboutthat/12127067/woman-says-she-is-a-cat-trapped-in-the-wrong-body.html

It’s exhausting apparently (must be all that chasing birds and mice, and licking her own backside).

Missed it the first time round and watched it after reading your comment. Yep, was very enlightening! How dare she steal my cat analogy though Grin

They are allowed to identify as black if they actually are... it's not really what's being discussed.

I was actually thinking about the £10 off for the Labour event. I wondered what they would do if my DD turned up and said "I'm black" because she doesn't look black. Obviously I thought everyone was psychic and would know what I was thinking. (My excuse is close family member having surgery and I am on here distracting myself. Well it is either than or my age is showing.)

PoorYorick · 23/01/2018 18:17

That woman isn't a cat, she's a neko. She's even got the godawful stuffed toys on her bed like a little girl.

Someone needs to tell her about that community. It's a bit out of fashion now (hipsters and pinups are more the thing) but it still exists and she'll be happier once she finds it.

MissionItsPossible · 23/01/2018 18:18

To be fair granny I too thought you had just randomly left that comment there, didn't realise it was in relation to the Labour event though as it followed right after it it looks obvious now Blush Hope the surgery goes ok 👍🏽

OP posts:
Fekko · 23/01/2018 18:19

A neko? Don’t tell me there’s another gender to contend with (or are the my the ones who dress up like animals for critter nookie?)

taskmaster · 23/01/2018 18:22

So I’m not sure how you can identify as a colour when it covers so many different attitudes

So exactly the same as gender then?

grannytomine · 23/01/2018 18:22

MissionItsPossible, yes it was me being distracted. No reason why anyone would figure it out. I've just heard she is in recovery, the op lasted several hours but so far so good. I will try to switch my brain back on.

x2boys · 23/01/2018 18:23

I hope your family members surgery goes ok granny, the world's gone mad! As an aside would the injections not be melanin ? Or however you spell it Melatonin is give to people to help them sleep its a naturally occurring hormone(I think)

grannytomine · 23/01/2018 18:24

Thanks x2boys, we are hoping for the best. So far so good.
