To find fearne cotton annoying

She's promoting a stress book at the moment that is probably ghostwritten. She then goes on about how she's written children's books, cookery books, designed fashion ranges, presented TV and radio all while being a mum.

She's hardly dedicated herself to one craft and probably has minimal input to each of the projects she has put her name to. The only thing I can actually comment on is the presenting and she's pretty dire at that.

Just seems like a sad world where you can get all these opportunities thanks to nepotism and fame. They no doubt take away chances from actual writers or designers.

'Probably ghostwritten'Hmm You don't even know the facts so YABU to start a thread slagging her off.

You sound bitter.

GinDaddy · 22/01/2018 11:04

YANBU to find her annoying, that's subjective and is your right. I don't particularly enjoy her presenting style, and I do agree that being related to a Head of Light Entertainment is a very convenient way to get into the BBC.

However I do think YABU to focus so much on it, and whether she's "dedicating herself to a craft" etc - every time I feel tempted to get mad about somebody who I feel is getting a lucky break, I just redouble my efforts on getting where I want to be.

derxa · 22/01/2018 11:08

Veeeerrrrrrryy annoying but I'm probably a jealous old hag Grin Her and Holly who work sooooo hard. They give me the rage.

iskegness · 22/01/2018 11:08

I'm not focusing that much on it, but it's endemic these days celebs slapping their name on something and taking credit for other people's work.

Hard work alone won't get you success, the most important thing is who you know

Shockers · 22/01/2018 11:10

I don’t think you can base an AIBU on a ‘probably’.

Elementally · 22/01/2018 11:11

I get your point about her taking the credit for someone else's work, but that book would never have been written or published in the first place without her name attached. So you could say that she's actually creating work for other people.

iskegness · 22/01/2018 11:16

It's an educated guess it's ghostwritten as she can barely string together a few words in a short interview on a topic she's supposedly written a book on. So I'm not fancying the chances that she actually wrote a book with out significant help.

Maybe she did provide work for others, but I'm sure they would rather be releasing stuff themselves and not have some celeb creaming away a significant amount of the proffit and recognition.

It's not unlikely that Cotton's book is ghostwritten - the one with Holly Willoughby was. You rarely find explicit acknowledgement of the ghost writer's work, but if you look at the acknowledgements, you often find a number of names in there vaguely credited with producing "ideas" or "sharing cake and chatting". Those are the ghost writers (aka "editors", only the "editing" is actually a comprehensive rewriting of a bunch of semi-literate, cluttered and confused emails) to produce a product that appeases the celebrity ego while also being saleable.

Shockers · 22/01/2018 11:34

She was quite articulate on the subject in the interview I heard.

Butterymuffin · 22/01/2018 11:36

I've never heard her be articulate in any interview, whether holding it or as the subject of it. Nepotism got her started but hasn't made her good at what she does.

Skarossinkplunger · 22/01/2018 11:37

Yet another thread by a woman having a pop at another woman she knows nothing about. Sad.

iskegness · 22/01/2018 12:35

Thanks owl!

I think that's giving them too much credit, often it's no writing involved and just random audio recordings of them rambling.

Ska how do you know I don't know anything? I know a related industry very well and know how these things work. It's nothing to do with sex, so you're being sexist.

Skarossinkplunger · 22/01/2018 12:38

Oh ok then Confused

Alwaysatyke · 22/01/2018 12:40

I heard her in the radio the other day talking about the book and it sounded so much like "wish it, want it, do it" from family guy, I couldn't take it seriously

Littlechocola · 22/01/2018 12:40

I love her books and couldn’t care less if she wrote them or not. I’m buying the book, not her.

DownHereInTheHorridHouse · 22/01/2018 12:45

I'm a ghostwriter and I would much rather write books for other people and not have to be in the spotlight, so don't assume that we're all desperate to have our names out there! Yes, celebs get a foot in the door much more easily (or get approached to write the book that an editor or/and ghost has come up with), but does it matter? There's an awful lot of snobbery around writing books - as long as people are reading them and getting something from them, seems fine to me.

GinDaddy · 22/01/2018 13:30

@skarosinkplunger

"Yet another thread by a woman having a pop at another woman she knows nothing about".

Exactly, well put.

Oh and "it's not what you do, it's who you know" is often the cry of the perennial loser. I came from state school, didn't "know" anyone, and have still managed to build my career. Fearne can have hers as far as I'm concerned, it doesn't bother me whether she succeeds or not.

iskegness · 22/01/2018 14:04

Because as a woman I shouldn't ever be critical of anyoher woman?

Just because you are successful doesn't proove that nepotism isn't unfair in general Confused

Does she still present TV shows? I always found her style a bit irritating, think it's the way she over enunciates her words. But she doesn't invoke my ire a huge amount.

MsHomeSlice · 22/01/2018 14:07

She is a working mother you know.

I looked at her ‘calm’ book (or whatever it’s called) when I was in WHSmith the other day- biggest pile of bollocks I have ever seen. Who is buying it? And why? I usually like her on TV & radio but the books need to stop!

Sparklingbrook · 22/01/2018 14:09

I like her. Didn't know she had stress book out. Will go for a look.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 22/01/2018 14:09

I like Fearne. She seems like a good egg.

aaaaargghhhhelpme · 22/01/2018 14:11

I'm not her biggest fan but I've worked with her and she's incredibly hard working and lovely to work with. One of the few people who treats everyone in the crew with respect.

Also I'm not sure her ex-Bbc exec grandfathers cousin actually got her into the business. She originally won a competition to present on gmtv.
