To think my ds is complaining about something that will be fine

Ds starts a new college which is one and 15 minutes by car. His days with start at 10.30 am and finish at 16.00pm he's saying it will be draining for him and he won't cope. Aibu to think it's not that bad.

Tell him to pull up his big boy pants and get on with it. Maybe point out that hour and fifteen minutes either way is ample time to do homework?

MyBrilliantDisguise · 21/01/2018 21:47

Why are you letting this be an issue? Does everyone in your neighbourhood work locally?

He should be getting to college for 9 a.m., so that he can work for an hour before his first lesson. Tell him that from me (ex A level teacher)!

User700800 · 21/01/2018 21:48

He's saying it could be six by the time he gets back and he will get no time to himself

The commute sounds exhausting. As a student I commuted about 1hr 45mins each way and it gave me severe migraines and nausea. I struggled to work after such a long commute so didn't do very well with my qualifications.

usualGubbins · 21/01/2018 22:04

God he sounds a proper wimp! How on earth will he manage to work? I’m assuming he chose this college, so what solution is he offering if it’s all going to be too much for him?

ShellyBoobs · 21/01/2018 22:06

So he would need to leave home 9.15am and would be back home by 5.15pm?

And he can’t cope with that?

How old is he?

Are there other issues which would make what is effectively a short day in adult terms impossible?

Catsize · 21/01/2018 22:07

Maybe he should read the thread on here about commute times? Mine can be 3hrs each way. I’m in my 40s, 2 small children, and additional work to do when I get home. I chose it, I can’t complain. Nor can he really.

Catsize · 21/01/2018 22:08

Just seen your last comment OP. Sorry, but that’s hilarious. Some kids are in nursery until 6. Suggest he starts there and works his way up. Sorry to sound harsh, but really...

steff13 · 21/01/2018 22:15

Why did he choose this school if he's unhappy with the commute?

Ariela · 21/01/2018 22:15

I find his attitude slightly offensive. How lucky to get on the bus after the rush hour and come home before it?
We live in commutersville so the traffic is horrendous, even at 7am. My daughter gets herself up and leaves home usually before us, drives 15 mins to the farm where her horse is kept, she unlocks and feeds the entire stableyard as she is first up there, then puts out and mucks out her horse, then drives another 10 mins and goes to work on a dairy farm (more sh*t shovelling) and then goes to University (20 mins drive back in the opposite direction and 5 mins walk). After Uni, provided it's not a late finish (in which case I do it as the horse will not stay out once it's got cold without wrecking the field) she rides her horse, feeds and puts it to bed
Admittedly she drives herself (but she pays for her own car and its running costs).
She's definitely not tired.

From the age of 11 I used to have a 1hr 15 min commute to school and back, involving bus , train, and walking a mile. We finished 15 mins before him, at 15.45, but we started over one and a half hours before him, at 8.55. I find it hard to sympathise with him.

user1485196412 · 21/01/2018 22:29

When I was training I used to have to get a bus at 5am- I had to get up at 4.30. I didn't finish with till 7pm at best , then got home about 9pm. Whilst having essays to write. Tell him he'll be ok.

MrsJayy · 21/01/2018 22:30

Oh no not back till 6 that is practically middle of the night

Tistheseason17 · 21/01/2018 22:35

9.15 to 5.15.
That's less than a normal working day and commute for many people.

He'll be fine, or.... he'll never get a job in the real world! Smile

LegallyBrunet · 21/01/2018 22:35

When I was in sixth form college my commute was an hour and a half and involved changing buses. I had to be out the house by half seven to get there for nine, finished at quarter past three and didn't get back home until nearly five. When I did my Access course I walked forty five minutes to college, you're son is being unreasonable

IAmLucy · 21/01/2018 22:38

My DD who is 12 has cerebral palsy, autism and a severe sleep disorder. Her commute to her SEN school begins at 7:30am and she doesn't get home till AT LEAST 5pm Monday to Friday.

He needs to grow up a bit

IAmLucy · 21/01/2018 22:39

And 7:30 is when she actually leaves the house. She gets up at 5.45 as it takes so long to do all of her care needs/get dressed etc

BackforGood · 21/01/2018 22:46

A "One and a half hour drive without traffic" would take a heck of a lot longer than that in my City, if doing in traffic. You could double it at least.
That's a LOT of concentrating for a commute. It is a very different scenario from sitting on a train or bus. Then doing it all back again in the evening rush hour traffic too. Presumably he is a relatively new driver too - just guessing from the fact he is your ds and he is off to college ?
However, did this not occur to him when applying ?

Truthstar · 21/01/2018 22:48

Thats a lot of time traveling
Yes it will be draining and no he wont have much time for himself

Snowysky20009 · 21/01/2018 22:55

Seriously he needs a kick up the ass! Can't believe he's complaining. Mine at uni was 1 hour 30 each way after I had dropped off my baby in day care. Ds- his commute in September will be 1 hour 45 min to uni. (And the obviously back).

Your son sounds like a precious snowflake!

WeAllHaveWings · 21/01/2018 23:00

Is he just having a whinge as the reality of being a student kicks in or is he suggesting not going/an alternative career path?

happymumof4crazykids · 21/01/2018 23:05

Your son sounds lazy and entitled. Many people commute on a daily basis for work and study in the evenings. As for not much time to himself that's what the weekend is for Hmm

Ollivander84 · 21/01/2018 23:08

At age 10 my school was 27 miles away. So a 54 mile round trip every day and school from 8.30am - 6pm (prep time)
I used to cry I was so tired in the mornings but I won a scholarship and it was too good an opportunity to turn down. He's being daft

choirmumoftwo · 21/01/2018 23:09

DD leaves home at 7.15 and gets home between 5.30 and 6.30, and has done since year 9. She also does 2 ballet classes per week and sings in 2 out of school choirs. I'm sure your DS will survive.

PlaymobilPirate · 21/01/2018 23:16

Tell him to pull out of it then... he's being ridiculous
