I just love going away and have really loved most places. One place in particular really Underwhelmed me...Gibraltar...just like Britain in the sun! I'm sure it has so much to offer, but I couldn't wait to cross the border back to Spain!

I think that people who go on holiday expecting a comparable level of safety to the UK need to either wind their necks in or not leave their houses.

Except I've travelled and lived in 40 odd countries. So when I say San Francisco felt sketchy, I'm comparing it to places most people wouldn't set foot in.

And many places feel safer than the UK. Many many places.

SleightOfMind · 21/01/2018 21:55

Yes SF is troubling. I’ve been as a tourist, for work (briefly), and staying with local friends.
Nothing too bad happened but there is a real edge that you’re unprepared for in an affluent western city.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 21/01/2018 21:57

Don’t we all feel safer at home becuase it’s familiar

There was part of SF that felt very unsettling parts of LA too. Venice beach used to be very edgy gangs would start hanging around from early evening it’s better now

Greylilypad · 21/01/2018 21:59

London.
Definitely my least favourite major city I have been to. New York is so much more interesting, exciting, and welcoming.

DorisDangleberry · 21/01/2018 22:00

If Mumsnet has taught me anything, everywhere is crap

Niagara Falls
Wet

Mount Everest
A big rock

Pisa
Tower not straight

Rome
Amphitheater falling my down

Pompeii
Rubble

New York
Busy

Paris
French

The Hanging Gardens of Babylon
Not as good as the local park

HesterShaw · 21/01/2018 22:03

I'm a bit of a coward about strange cities, but felt ok in SF, even when on my own. Obviously I kept alert and I didn't wander into Tenderloin and places. This was in 2015 so it's probably worse now.

howrudeforme · 21/01/2018 22:14

Rome - went many times and didn’t really ‘get it’ dirtyy, nasty people etc.

City dirty and unloved.

Sick of rip off culture and hated ciampino where the police would just give a running commentary of racial/xenophophic shit of anyone walking through the airport doors.

The time when dh by accident got into wrong lane by airport and 3 cop cars giving us shit and threatened us with missing flight.

Ds also hates it as when he was 9 a nasty elderly woman had a real go at him - xh had to pull him off her.

Xh Italian national and he hates it.

XDH is a national

Agerbilatemycardigan · 21/01/2018 22:26

At least I'm not the only one that hates Paris. Been several times but never been impressed by it.

The last time was when exP was working there. Expensive, pretentious and overrated. Never managed to have a decent meal and one bloody hotel charged me the equivalent of £30.00 for 2 tiny sub-par drinks.

DreamyMcDreamy · 21/01/2018 22:29

Doris Grin

Nail on head Grin

It's comedy gold lol

MarieNostra · 21/01/2018 22:37

@Doris,

Brilliant post. Brings all this angst down to reality for some.

And so funny too! Thank you.

Allaboutthatcake · 21/01/2018 22:38

Giants causeway

DorisDangleberry · 21/01/2018 22:55

And still it comes!

Giant's Causeway
More like Finn MacCool's crappy little bridge

londonrach · 21/01/2018 22:59

I wanted to visit giant causeway too!!!

Skowvegas · 21/01/2018 23:00

New York. Dirty with piles of bin bags everywhere.

I agree and was moaning about this to DH, who explained to me...

New York was built without alleyways behind the buildings, so the bin bags have to go in front of the buildings. Chicago was built with alleyways behind the buildings to solve problems like these. I think it makes a big difference.

I still like lots of things about NY (helps that when we go to stay there we stay in Greenwich Village) but I really really love Chicago. I've had so many great meals there, and there's so much to explore and the people are genuinely lovely. I explore a new bit each time I visit and still have a long list of stuff to see there.

treaclesoda · 21/01/2018 23:01

The thing to remember about the Giant's Causeway is that the giant bit doesn't relate to the size of the causeway Grin which is not gigantic at all. If you bear that in mind, I'm sure you will find it perfectly agreeable Grin

PancakeInMaBelly · 21/01/2018 23:02

Also on MN:
"Nowhere is a crap place, crap places don't exist, you obviously didn't try to make the most of it, everywhere in the world is lovely if you're a smug bastard who tells other people that they should have tried obvious crap that they probably DID try......"

DorisDangleberry · 21/01/2018 23:03

Saharan Desert
Sandy

Antartica
A bit icy

Saudi Arabia
Couldn't get a decent pint of John Smiths

Great Pyramid of Giza
Pointy

Great Wall of China
It's just a wall innit. I have one of them at home

treaclesoda · 21/01/2018 23:05

Doris I love it Grin.

Have you thought about travel writing at all?

GinisLife · 21/01/2018 23:08

Cairo/The Pyramids/Egypt in general. Hated it. Dirty, didn't like the people, hated how pushy they were. The pyramids were a massive disappointment.

Rome - I was horrified at the amount of graffiti and Milan was the same only far more boring

Amsterdam - boring city

Barcelona - loved it but they have a massive pick pocket problem.

I could happily live n Paris. I love it.

Allaboutthatcake · 21/01/2018 23:08

I was so excited for giants causeway but it was totally underwhelming. The Garrick o reads bridge was great though.

UnderCrackers5 · 21/01/2018 23:17

Paradise. I was sooo looking forward to it. Next time I will go to Me

DorisDangleberry · 21/01/2018 23:19

Grand Canyon
Just a big valley

The Serengeti
Just like Longleat but without Center Parcs

Monte Carlo

Tokyo
Couldn't get decent chip barm anywhere

LapdanceShoeshine · 21/01/2018 23:21

After Doris’s posts I’m now utterly confused about whether all the rest are serious.

I fear they are Shock

Love yours, though, Doris Grin

DreamyMcDreamy · 21/01/2018 23:23
