To think all cheap candles are hopeless?

I've been burning loads of different from cheap to mid priced candles over the last few months and I thought they were OK, today I've lit my Jo Malone ( last one I will be buying seen as they give so much free shit to 'bloggers') and the room is filled with fragrance and it's divine!!!!

Please give me some insight into brands that also do this... I always feel let down!

Another vote for Shearer's. Also St Eval's from Cornwall. Amazing!

HisBetterHalf · 20/01/2018 19:53

Scentsy are lovely

ElsieMc · 20/01/2018 19:53

As someone has said upthread, TKMaxx. Their cheaper DW range is good for everyday use, with nice fragrances, honey etc. Heyland and Whittle is a move up which smell lovely for around £9.99 and I have just bought their olive one. I prefer Parks Candles to This Works and they are very aromatherapy smelling. Sometimes they have Neom in there as well.

My dd's bought me a Jo Malone once and whilst luxurious, I have had just as nice from TK.

I also think the Aldi candles are crap.

Looking for some decent candle suppliers, thanks MN!

BalloonsPop · 20/01/2018 19:59

Rare as rocking horse poo Grin I've used this a lot over the years, no idea where I first heard it but I love it.

coldnosewarmears · 20/01/2018 20:06

There was a thread before Christmas about candles. Someone recommended a website for a small independent firm with some really lovely, well priced candles. Don't suppose anyone can remember?

Buxbaum · 20/01/2018 20:13

Was it not St Eval, cold?

DumbleDee · 20/01/2018 20:23

Aldi No1 candle. I'm obsessed. I'm going to bulk buy

LisaMed1 · 20/01/2018 20:25

Seriously recommend Woodwick. They have lovely scents which linger in a good way. Their scents are also really nice, not artificial at all. You also get a crackle.

I would only buy them in a shop, though, as most mail order/online sources have a fail rate. Fortunately Home Sense and TK Maxx often have them.

I got a lovely one from DH home from Home sense, but I've had some grim ones from there as well. You can get lucky or it can go very, very wrong.

WonderLime · 20/01/2018 20:25

I really like Parks Candles. They have some lovely scents and the fragrance is quite strong.

coldnosewarmears · 20/01/2018 20:26

Very similar Buxbaum but possibly a smaller choice. I think they had big 3 wick candles.

FuckyDucky · 20/01/2018 20:28

coldnose there were lots of recommendations for Shearer’s on a thread not so long ago.

MatildaTheCat · 20/01/2018 20:32

I did recommend St Eval on the other thread. They are also available on Amazon to avoid postage charges. I first discovered them at a local store and frequently give them as gifts. Their diffusers are also excellent and super long lasting (if placed in a cool spot).

DontFuckingSayIt · 20/01/2018 20:32

I've dabbled in making my own and will say that, to make a really nice and strong-smelling candle costs a lot more than it does to make a cheap one with paraffin wax and small amounts of cheap fragrance.
Won't argue that many good ones are overpriced though as these costs will surely be reduced when manufacturing on a large scale. But then you factor in marketing, testing, insurance, premises, paying staff etc...

CantChoose · 20/01/2018 20:32

Neom are my favourites. They fill a room like no other brand I've used.
I buy most of my candles in TKMaxx but I second other posters and avoid parafin waxes.
My friend bought me a woodwick for Christmas but I find the crackle really annoying.

Readermumof3 · 20/01/2018 20:36

Interesting...I have 3 different Aldi candles that I got for Christmas but I haven't burnt any of them yet snob

I have one of those crackling wick jobs just now in bath so can't check name and it's lovely! The cracking wick thing frightens the cat though 😂

Theapplestretching · 20/01/2018 20:37

I buy Yorkshire Soap Company candles, they're about a tenner but smell amazing - fills my whole flat if I light one.

Best cheap-ish candles I've found.

Littlelambpeep · 20/01/2018 20:43

Am Irish company max benjamin make really stunning candles for around 20 euro. I tend to burn a few drops of citronella in a burner and it works out cheap

Otherwise I like Yankee lemon lavendar..

Cocoloco75 · 20/01/2018 20:44

Another Neom fan here, they are just gorgeous, converted after noticing my SIL house always smells amazing. Also like woodwick. I mostly use reed diffusers at the moment due to small child in the house though.

ranoutofquinoa · 20/01/2018 20:45

Neom are fab, soy wax and plenty of essential oil.

I have been down the diy route and when you realise how much essential oil you need it's worth paying the price for a Neom.

RocketPockets · 20/01/2018 20:51

I recommend woodwick candles! They smell amazing, give off a really good fragrance and have that lovely crackle. You can get them in boots, home sense and tk maxx. Also home bargains ones are pretty good. I had the gingerbread Christmas one and it smelt amazing!
There are quite a few places on instagram that sell wax melts that smell amazing Smile

Georgina1975 · 20/01/2018 20:52

Yes. Another vote for Neom here. I buy direct from Neom and TK Maxx, but Neom candles and diffusers from TK Maxx (still fab) never seem as strong. I wonder if the essential oils have faded a bit?

diddlemethis · 20/01/2018 20:57

I ditched candles and bought one of those steam scent things, few drops of oil in the water and the house smells lovely.
I use a diffuser oil from John Lewis rather than essential oils, it lasts for ages.

Safer than a flame.

Feilin · 20/01/2018 20:58

Check out the bearded candle makers . Very good n.irish company.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 20/01/2018 20:59

I use a candle warmer and that’s a lot better.
