To think all cheap candles are hopeless?

I've been burning loads of different from cheap to mid priced candles over the last few months and I thought they were OK, today I've lit my Jo Malone ( last one I will be buying seen as they give so much free shit to 'bloggers') and the room is filled with fragrance and it's divine!!!!

Please give me some insight into brands that also do this... I always feel let down!

Aldi, Jo Malone candles smell exactly the same as Jo Malone.

I have a Jo Malone candle and honestly can't tell the difference........good luck getting hold of an Aldi, No Malone dupe tho. They're as rare as rocking horse shit.

Buxbaum · 20/01/2018 18:48

Cheap candles are made of paraffin wax which smokes and leaves sooty deposits. It's not very good for you to breathe in the fumes, either.

Hoviscats · 20/01/2018 18:51

Neom are gorgeous. Much better than Jo Malone imo.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 20/01/2018 18:56

St Eval are rather nice and not crazy cash. Has anyone tried the wax melts that Perfume Parlour make? I quite like the idea of my house smelling of my favourite perfume.

Why do you care that they give freebies to bloggers?!

I work in an agency, in London - I am very involved in the marketing / advertising scene / PR .

To put it quite simply, why should I pay obscene prices to companies who just send boxes and boxes of free shit out to people - many who regularly break ASA rules etc. I'd rather buy with a smaller company that don't - we should take this to the brands and bloggers 2 thread ;)

Thanks for the awesome candle recommendations will check them out :) also sooo cool that you are making your own. Do you sell them? xx

I have a diptyque one which I hardly ever burn because it is amazing and just makes the other candles seem rubbish! Ikea tea lights are great for basic fragrance. I don’t really buy mid ranged ones as I feel like they aren’t better enough than Ikea to justify the price.

IrkThePurist · 20/01/2018 19:05

I buy plain candles and drop some fragrance oil into the wax.

HotelEuphoria · 20/01/2018 19:07

I actually prefer the melts in a candle burner, I use glade and Yankee and they are much better than candles. I burn the melts a dozen times or so using tea lights then remove them from the burner and start new ones so the scent isn't always strong.

LovingLola · 20/01/2018 19:07

I get Neom and This Works candles in TK Maxx.
I also have Jo Malone ones. The Aldi versions of the Jo Malone are shite.

BellMcEnd · 20/01/2018 19:08

Shearer candles are lovely, I really like the Amber Noir one in particular. I have a Jo Malone one that I was given - the scent is amazing but no way could I justify the price tag myself.

Fosterdog123 · 20/01/2018 19:09

Yes, agree, Neom are fab.

SloanePeterson · 20/01/2018 19:11

Irk please be careful doing that, those oils are highly flammable!

itsalwaystimefortea · 20/01/2018 19:13

Used to burn loads of candles but now I'm a total Scentsy convert.

Scent lasts longer, there's no smoke or risk of the puppy knocking it over and setting light to the curtains! The two burners I have also make great nightlights/corner lamps. Smile

wolfmom · 20/01/2018 19:13

My favourite was melts and candles come from busy bee candles. I bought a chocolate brownie scented one and it was amazing, my mouth was watering.

rabbit12345 · 20/01/2018 19:18

Home bargains have beaten all of my expensive candles for lasting smell hands down.

They have a limited range but I love the Christmas one for all year round as it smells fresh.

They are sized and shaped like Yankee and cost £2.50

ItWentInMyEye · 20/01/2018 19:20

Aldi Number 3, pomegranate scent is lush. Fills the whole room with scent when it's lit, and if you leave the lid off through the day you can still smell it unlit

Sparklemummyx0x0x · 20/01/2018 19:21

A scentsy convert here. A friend had a scentsy party and went along.
Yes they aren't cheap, but you can get fragrances online cheaper and the actual burners themselves look beautiful and some also used as a lamp. Even my mum has got one and step dad likes it.
I do love Yankee candle as well but agree with the smoke/fumes.

riledandharrassed · 20/01/2018 19:22

Will check out some melts too thanks !!

I was given a THANN one as a gift. Lasted ages and scented the whole house. I would never have got one myself. I'm converted, a decent candle is worth it.

FinnegansCake · 20/01/2018 19:35

I bought a L’Occitane candle in a tin, rose-scented, and it lasted ages and smelled lovely. I didn’t need to burn it for long to make a medium-sized room smell nice.

leftwiththedognow · 20/01/2018 19:40

Everyone was papping on about how good Ikea's £2 were. They are shite. nice emergency whisky glasses though

You get what you pay for. Cant beat Yankee. Just get them from Home Bargains at at least half price and dont be too fussy about your fragrance choice.

PoorYorick · 20/01/2018 19:41

I agree. It took me ages to admit it because scented candles are absolutely everywhere, you can get them so cheaply, the Jo Malone prices seemed insane. But when I finally tried JM, after trying every cheap and mid-market option, I had to concede.

PoorYorick · 20/01/2018 19:42

They're as rare as rocking horse shit.

Did you make this phrase up? It's brilliant. I'm going to use it.

UnravelMyMind · 20/01/2018 19:46

I think the Aldi ones are crap. St Eval, however...

MatildaTheCat · 20/01/2018 19:51

StEval truly are the best. They smell Devine. I particularly like Tranquility but they are all great. I’m still burning my Christmas Orange candle. They also burn down very evenly, especially the tinned ones.

I sound like an advert but they are brilliant and a proper family run business in Cornwall rather than A huge conglomerate like Estée Lauder who bought Jo Malone out.
