New nanny is 35 minutes late

Got in touch with a new nanny this week through an agency and we arranged to meet today to see if she was suitable for the role.
She is now 35 minutes late and has not been in contact. Obviously I don't want to rant and rage because I don't know her circumstances and I'm trying to be understanding. But 35 minutes late really? Is that acceptable or aibu???
My twins were excited to meet her too. It is snowing but not sticking, has this influenced her decision? But surely she'd contact me???

Not good at all.

HoHoHoHo · 20/01/2018 11:42

I think it's unacceptable unless there is a good reason. She might be really ill, she might have had a bereavement or she might just be rubbish.

LyraPotter · 20/01/2018 11:42

That isn't great! She might have a really good excuse, but it's odd that she hasn't contacted you.

FittonTower · 20/01/2018 11:43

If it's her first day and through an agency I'd suspect she's been told the wrong time or something.

Steeley113 · 20/01/2018 11:43

She probably isn’t going to turn up, let’s be honest!

Aquamarine1029 · 20/01/2018 11:43

Unless she is injured and/or incapacitated, (hopefully she isn't), it is inexcusable that she hasn't contacted you to explain her tardiness. Inform the agency you need a new candidate.

BadPolicy · 20/01/2018 11:44

Is there any way she could have misunderstood where to meet you? Could she be stood waiting somewhere else thinking you're late?

Chchchchangeabout · 20/01/2018 11:45

We had a nanny interview, she contacted us by text that morning to say she'd been up late and could we postpone to another day. Er, no. Hope she is ok and nothing bad happened to her - but if just late for no good reason then don't hire her.

Bratsandtwats · 20/01/2018 11:45

Can't you ring her?

NataliaOsipova · 20/01/2018 11:46

Hmmm. On my limited experience of this, it's a bad sign and I'd watch her like a hawk. Could be a complete misunderstanding though and she's been told the wrong date or time by the agency. Give it another 20 mins and call them to ask?

Iloveanimals · 20/01/2018 11:48

The agency put us in direct contact so I spoke to her yesterday, gave her address and time. Very, very clear. I have contacted her yes but no response.

I'd call her or the agency and see what's going on. Possibly a miscommunication but I really hate people being late so I sympathise. If she doesn't have a good excuse then I probably wouldn't take her on but I'm pretty unforgiving about lateness.

kaytee87 · 20/01/2018 11:48

Cross post. Well I suppose either something really bad has happened or she doesn't want the job.

Snowysky20009 · 20/01/2018 11:50

I'd say she's changed her mind, and couldn't be arsed to get in touch.
I'd ask for a new candidate.

Iloveanimals · 20/01/2018 11:51

She was happy to look after the twins (so she said) three days a week but she may have changed her mind. It's fine if she has. Just would have liked to know 😂

Namechangetempissue · 20/01/2018 11:51

That is a bad start! I doubt she will turn up with the lack of phone call. It would be a no from me unless there was a very good reason.

Iloveanimals · 20/01/2018 11:53

I've contacted the agency and told them what's going on. I've told them I'm not interested in her at the moment (unless I find a change in her circumstances that caused this) so new nanny search it is!

supersop60 · 20/01/2018 11:55

Bad start. She should have phoned if there was a problem.

CheapSausagesAndSpam · 20/01/2018 11:55

What did the agency say about her not showing up?

Iloveanimals · 20/01/2018 12:02

The agency are finding out what's happened and will contact me either today or Monday

OP posts:
MyBrilliantDisguise · 20/01/2018 12:03

It doesn't matter what happened, though. She would have had her phone on her so should have been in touch.

Viviennemary · 20/01/2018 12:03

She could be stuck in traffic and not able to use her phone which is being responsible. I would hold judgement till you here from her. Could easily be a misunderstanding about times or dates. I'd contact the agency for an explanation. Unless she's just decided not to turn up which is a poor show.

MumGoneMild · 20/01/2018 12:05

Theres no excuse for being this late without contact. Especially on the first day.

EdwinaMarlow · 20/01/2018 12:06

I've had this experience many times with nannies coming for interview. There MIGHT be an innocent explanation but ime it's always flakiness and just can't be bothered to tell you they don't fancy getting out of bed/the job. Forget her and move on. And tell the agency she shouldn't be on their books

Iloveanimals · 20/01/2018 12:08

She's over an hour late now so doubt she'll show 😂
