I am neither pro or anti royals.

But £180.00 for a buzz cut (William). My DP buzzes his own head every fortnight in the garden for free.

As I understand it (prepared to be told that I'm wrong about this) but don't they get some kind of state handouts? Is this a reasonable use of our money?

I know they have to live in horrible old houses that probably cost a fortune to heat and maintain and I shudder to think about the council tax, but £180.00 for a buzz????

NHS? Schools? Social care? Roads? Potholes? Police? National security? Investment in environmental products - replacing plastics etc? Charities? Legal aid for those disenfranchised? Social justice campaigns ........ Sorry ....... You get the idea.

AIBU????

Dh shaves his own head why can't he do It himselfConfused he does look better though.

Griddle, I have misunderstood nothing. You, OTOH, appear to have misunderstood my post.

Do you know what happens to money from people who have died intestate? It goes to the state but, if you die in Devon, say, does the money go to Devon Council to benefit charities/people in Devon, or does it go into some nameless pot in Westminster?

What is it used for? That is what I was saying.

If money from people who died intestate is NOT used for charities, etc. in the rest of the country, then it is disingenuous to suggest that this would happen in Cornwall - even if the money didn't go to the Duchy.

saladdays66 · 19/01/2018 11:29

His new SIL to be was photographed in a dress worth more than 50% of my house, I don't think they're a family which prioritises sensible spending tbh.

Um, Sinceyouask, Megham is a successful and rich woman in her own right. Are you seriously telling her that she doesn't have the right to choose what to buy or wear??

Also, she's only engaged to Harry - she's hardly part of the RF yet, so I don't think you can accuse the whole family of not spending sensibly based on one dress.

You must be a barrel of fucking laughs to be around, saladdays66 Hmm

Charming :( Why?

ladyvimes · 19/01/2018 11:37

All of those saying they don’t get tax payers money they get money from a duchy do any of you know exactly what that is?! It’s basically a tax on the massive amounts of land they ‘own’. If we abolished the monarchy they wouldn’t get to keep the land as it was never really theirs to begin with.

IMightMentionGriddlebone · 19/01/2018 11:40

Salad Your earlier misapprehension persists. No-one is saying equivalent estates presently go to charities in Devon, or that they would go to charities in Cornwall if it didn't go to Charles.

Absolutely. No-one. Funds would be transferred to the Treasury, as they are in the rest of the country.

I am saying that at present, an actual named person, Prince Charles gets it, and puts it in his Duke of Cornwall's Benevolent Fund. He picks and chooses what to do with with that fund, and what he does with it is a matter of public record. I find some of his decisions extremely distasteful.

Queeniebed · 19/01/2018 11:40

The do have their own money and I have no problem if that is what he wants to spend his money on

IMightMentionGriddlebone · 19/01/2018 11:46

Let me rephrase. Actually, the proceeds of intestate estates could be solely used to benefit Cornwall à Cornish causes, starting from tomorrow. If Charles willed it. I don't think it is disingenuous of anyone to suggest that he has an obligation to use this money responsibly. Donations to Gordonstoun are not it.

@julesaway

Poor William. He was pretty dashing as a teenager. Even with the new buzz cut (much more appropriate for a badly balding man his age than his previous style) his face is not particularly attractive anymore. I wonder if he’ll continue to look ever more severe as he ages or if his looks will mellow. He looks so different from even 10 years ago.

What a fucking nasty comment.

Let's see a picture of YOU, coz you obviously look like a supermodel. Wink

FWIW, I think Wills is cute, and you sound like a very unpleasant person.

@BoffinMum you sound waaaaaay too invested in the royals and their income and where they get it and their tax dealings and so on and so on........ Even if some of what you have posted is actually true, I couldn't give a shit about it.

Undercoverbanana · 20/01/2018 06:36

Thanks for your replies everyone. I appreciate all POV.

I am still very unclear about how they have all their money, where it comes from and whether I think it is right in the modern world.

Of course William can't nip down the local barbers while Kate does the Lidl shop - I realise that.

I've never heard of this duchy thing. Can someone explain please? Is it to do with them being Duke of Cambridge? Do they earn rent from houses in Cambridge or something (only ever been to Cambridge once for a half marathon!).

Hmm

I think the £180, if true, is a home visit job, I do think it's a bit expensive, but for London not that expensive. We are up north and DD has a tidy up and extensions done usually around every 12weeks. A family friend, who is also a hairdresser, does them for a discounted price, they'd easily be double what we pay in the salon, three times as much down London I imagine.

ExDH always used to shave his own hair and he would sensibly never let me anywhere near his bonce! Grin

Anyway, for all we know, they could have been given a very very large tip on top of the standard haircut.

@saladdays66 "look at my hair" 😂😂😂

So Google. Read some websites, some articles.

Again, Google is your friend... See, e.g. duchyofcornwall.org/frequently-asked-questions.html#question_1
