AIBU to wonder about renting prices all around the UK?

Just being nosy really.
I rent in the south-east (Hampshire area) and it's expensive. My last place was a private rented 1 bed cluster house which set us back £700 a month!
Now in a council house, paying £490 for a 2 bed.

Often think about moving away from Hampshire, but would like an idea of what the prices are like elsewhere!

You have an extremely low rent for an expensive area. Why would you move?

specialsubject · 18/01/2018 13:00

spend as long as you want on rightmove for the answer.

you will find that there are places that are good to live, have work, schools, transport etc where rent is the same or less than you are paying. They won't be in the bottom corner though. But they aren't all in Scotland or the rainy parts of the UK either.

Welcome to London

Depending where you live in Hampshire that's pretty good. Unless you're in the armpit of Leigh Park, I think you'll struggle to find less than that.

BarbaraofSevillle · 18/01/2018 13:05

That doesn't sound overly expensive to be honest, and I live in a city in northern England.

StickThatInYourPipe · 18/01/2018 13:06

Bedfordshire a tiny 2 bed costs about £850 pcm

peachgreen · 18/01/2018 13:07

I rented in Hampshire back in 2011 and was paying £950 for a small 2 bedroom terrace (not including bills or council tax) so your rent sounds pretty good to me, I have to say!

Moved to South London (zone 6) and paid £795 for a studio flat (one big room with kitchenette + a tiny shower room - my mum cried when they helped me move in as it was so small but I loved it), then met DH and paid £1200 for a tiny but lovely one bedroom attic flat, again not including bills or council tax.

In 2015 we moved to Belfast and paid £550 for a two bedroom terrace, which included rates and water. Which was a delightful change!

We've bought somewhere now and our mortgage is £595 for a three bedroom semi in one of the more expensive areas of NI. Feel very lucky to live somewhere with affordable housing (although to be fair that was a big part of why we moved).

If you've got a council house, consider staying. Very hard to get one here.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 18/01/2018 13:14

This thread is a stealth boast, isn't it?

Bluelady · 18/01/2018 13:17

Cambs £700 for a two bed terrace/flat.

Kaykee · 18/01/2018 13:20

Why would you move from a decent priced council house and pay for ridiculous rent.
I’m in Stirling pay £850 for a 4 bed semi nice house but have been given notice to quit and will be homeless with my 4 choekren in 3 weeks so if I had the security of a council property I’d be staying or arranging a swap if I didn’t want to stay in the area. Good luck with your move

SprogletsMum · 18/01/2018 13:22

I pay £500 a month for a 3 bed semi with a garage and a garden overlooking a park.
Council houses around here are about £300 a month for a 3 bed.

cloudflyer · 18/01/2018 13:26

2 bed flat near King's Cross (central London) - £502 a month. I'd definitely encourage you to look at exchanges if you have a council property - I'd only ever consider moving if it was to another council flat/house.

FakePlantsOnly · 18/01/2018 13:36

I live in a small town in Mid-Sussex and pay £775 a month for a one bedroom flat with no garden access or parking. That also includes no other bills and a council tax payment of £125 a month so I personally would say that you've got it good

LeiasGoldBikini · 18/01/2018 13:38

Also Belfast, £695 a month for a 4 bedroom house near the centre. No council tax.

Bryonie2017 · 18/01/2018 13:43

North London £1400 per month for a 2 bed house. Due to splitting up with H I'm looking at £800 for a studio/one bed for me and the baby. Must get my family to move somewhere cheaper!

RedPandaMama · 18/01/2018 13:45

North West half way between Manchester and Liverpool, reasonable area, small 2 bed terrace £575 a month. Beautiful house with Victorian fittings and stained glass doors but tiny now we have DD, and cold. Looking to move but unsure whether to buy in the north or head south for better job prospects and to be closer to DPs family.

RedPandaMama · 18/01/2018 13:47

@cloudflyer how on earth do you live that centrally for £500 a month?! Jealous.

CAAKE · 18/01/2018 13:49

£1450 for our 3 bed semi in a village in Sussex 😬

amusedbush · 18/01/2018 13:49

3 miles outside the centre of Glasgow, £450pcm for a two bedroom flat.

Mary1935 · 18/01/2018 13:50

South east London between £1200 and £1700 for a two bed rented flat - North West of Mancester £375 for a two bed terrace!!!
Your lucky to have a council place - I'd hold on to it.

Yukbuck · 18/01/2018 13:50

South West England. Tiny damp 2 bed flat. (1 single 1 double) £850 a month. That's cheap for here too.

mindutopia · 18/01/2018 13:51

It really depends on where you live. We live in Dorset in a rural hamlet (not a town) and have a 4 bed detached house with huge garden and detached garages for 800 pcm. My friend who lives in town pays about the same for a 2 bed flat though with no private garden.

Possumfish · 18/01/2018 13:54

500 a month for a 4 bed semi with double garage n triple drive and huge garden. In a lovely seaside town. Welcome to the north east! :)

Turquoisetamborine · 18/01/2018 13:55

We rent our two bed terrace out near the Northumberland border for £390pm with drive and garden. I keep it low if I like the tenant as i’d rather keep a nice tenant than get more money.
