AIBU to wonder about renting prices all around the UK?

Just being nosy really.
I rent in the south-east (Hampshire area) and it's expensive. My last place was a private rented 1 bed cluster house which set us back £700 a month!
Now in a council house, paying £490 for a 2 bed.

Often think about moving away from Hampshire, but would like an idea of what the prices are like elsewhere!

In Greater London- 30 mins on bus after zone 6 end of tube- £1200 for a one bed flat, front door into kitchen, through to bedroom, through to bathroom, no connecting rooms and no built in storage. Moved to a 2 bed with a small hall in a block, 15 mins walk from the first, initially £1100 up to £1200 when I moved out 2.5 years later. Now in a 2 bed in the center of a small coastal town, opposite several clubs and above an arcade, £650 per month.

But it isn't just that. Rent alone isn't the whole picture. First flat was about £400 in fees to move in, 2 months deposit, 6 weeks up front. But no yearly renewal fees. 2nd was over £500 in fees plus deposit and first month and £250 every year for renewal, check out fee including another inventory was about £400 plus a specified clean at about £140. Current flat? £50 to move in total, I'm told no renewal fees (it isn't in contract but neither was previous flat). Flat 1 in top 5 most expensive council tax area, flat 2 in top 3, current flat lower down but apparently in one of the highest growing.

In my original area I saw rooms at over £1000 per month, even without en suite.

peachgreen · 18/01/2018 14:01

@cloudflyer How on earth do you have a 2 bed flat near King's Cross for £502 a month?!!Shock

BMW6 · 18/01/2018 14:02

OP £490 for a 2 bed house in Hampshire is really cheap! In fact I'd say that's cheap for anywhere! Confused

TheHobbitMum · 18/01/2018 14:03

I don't private rent anymore (did 15yrs ago £575 for 2 bed) and now I'm with a HA I pay £550 for a 4/5 bed house. Some rents are shocking Sad

Curiositykillsthecat · 18/01/2018 14:03

Not a stealth boast at all!
Literally just wondering what the rest of the UK where paying!

I could never live anywhere like London- far too hectic!

OP posts:
Curiositykillsthecat · 18/01/2018 14:06

Also I know the £490 I pay now is cheap, never said it wasn't, though I wasn't clear that I was referring to the private rented- but when we were looking at private renting a 2/3 bed the prices were shocking!

In my rural village in N Ireland it would cost around £450 per month for a terrace house or £550 per month for a three bed semi.

It's obviously ok compared with a lot of areas, although on the other hand most people renting them would be on minimum wage so it's still a huge chunk of their income.

MazDazzle · 18/01/2018 14:07

2 bedroom terrace, £450 pcm. NE Scotland. A 2 bed flat would be the same.

TriJo · 18/01/2018 14:08

North London (zone 2), paying £1150/month for a 2 bed. We have an absolute bargain for the area, a 2 bed in a neighbouring building was advertised at £1500/month a while back and people were queuing down the road to view it.

OverTheParapet · 18/01/2018 14:09

SE London 2 bed terrace £1200 PCM and that's dirt cheap round here! Private rent

Curiositykillsthecat · 18/01/2018 14:11

@treaclesoda & @MazDazzle
Is this private renting prices?
Amazing if so!!!

£700 a month, West Midlands for a 3 bed semi

silkpyjamasallday · 18/01/2018 14:14

Currently in the midlands and two bed terraces like ours are about £1500 a month. We are moving to a two bed flat in zone 2/3 which is £1250 a month, we were the first in to view and signed on the spot as it is so so cheap for the area and not far of the square footage of our current house. Our grotty one bed flat in Brixton cost £1300. None of these include bills/council tax etc. We just have to wait a few years until I finish uni and start earning then we will get a mortgage which will be about a third of what we are currently paying, we can't get a mortgage with only one earner even though we could more easily afford it than renting. It's ridiculous. If I could get a council house with a pittance of rent due I would never leave.

owltrousers · 18/01/2018 14:18

Tiny 2 bed house with a garden and driveway in Bristol. £805 per month.

Downstairs is open plan kitchen/living room. No space for a dining table. Two small bedrooms upstairs but you can only fit a double bed in one of them. Bathroom is about 2x3m.

This is on the outskirts of Bristol, about 30 mins drive to town.

Curiositykillsthecat · 18/01/2018 14:18

@GenuwineMummy

Thats amazing, assuming private?

Thank you all for your responses so far! This is very interesting and helping us decide where to plan on moving to in the future Grin

Cumbria. A two-bed house in our town goes for about £300/month. But if you go into the National park the cost trebles.

Didntcomeheretofuckspiders · 18/01/2018 14:25

We’ve not long moved out of our one bed flat in mid Sussex and were paying £675pm including water. It was as really nice and ridiculously underpriced compared to everything else in the area.

You could have moved into our old place Fakeplants 😂

hannah1992 · 18/01/2018 14:36

I live in a large town and depending which village you live in you can get a big standard terraced 2 bedroom for about 385 per month but then at the other end in nicer villages they are over 1000 but you do get a lot for your money. I’ll pop on rightmove and see if I can find some examples

misslomi · 18/01/2018 14:36

£720 for a large 2 bed bungalow with a garage & garden in Devon.

Shame the garage leaks massively, garden is a wreck, no central heating, mould, the world's smallest shower and broken kitchen!

Thank god we are in the process of buying our own place!

Paddingtonthebear · 18/01/2018 14:40

Fairly average 3 bed detached house with tiny garden in nice area with great school catchment = £1400 pcm, South Coast

Paddingtonthebear · 18/01/2018 14:40

No garage.

Lollyb86 · 18/01/2018 14:43

Essex £975 for a smallish 2 bed semi detached house

Littlebitshort · 18/01/2018 14:43

Buckinghamshire friend of mine pays 1650pcm for an average 2 bed house with driveway and good size garden. Beautiful village with excellent schools. I only pay £800 for a 3 bed however my landlord is a friend so mates rates and all that!

hannah1992 · 18/01/2018 14:44

Ok found 2 examples one for 350 for standard 3 bedroom one for 1650 large 5 bedroom.

Personally mine costs 525 per month and it’s quite a large 3 bedroom in a nice village

If you are thinking of moving, why not consider mutual exchange. That way you retain your secure tenancy. Speak to your housing provider who probably have a scheme going.
