SAHM/Homemakers - What do you do all day?

Fruem · 16/01/2018 20:31

Those who choose to be a SAHM/homemaker, who don’t ‘have’ to work, what do you do all day?!

I’m talking the SAHM’s who don’t work from home. Who don’t have to look after the kids all day etc.

If you’ve done cleaning/washing/shopping etc. How do you fill your day?

I don't think it does say it all though. I think it says half. It's laced with the connotation of: "SAHP, we do your job and more which makes us better."

As per my previous post, I couldn't afford to go back to work as I earn less than the cost of childcare. As does everyone on minimum wage.

I could, I suppose, work evenings and weekends. And never see my husband. So we'd have loads more money and way less sex 😂 I'm alright thanks!

GrouchyKiwi · 19/01/2018 13:51

I don't think it says it all either. It's talking about an argument that only exists when opinion-piece writers and goady fuckers stick their oars in. In real life people get on with their own lives don't think about how other families do it, except for the occasional Grass Is Always Greener moments we all have.

hollowtree · 19/01/2018 13:57

grouchy now that says it all! 👏

gillybeanz · 19/01/2018 14:01

The only time one is better than the other is if the family have made the wrong choice and should be doing the opposite.
I can't think I've ever heard of this situation.
I've known many justify their choice from both sides, which is sad as nobody should have to justify their choices to anyone else other than those that matter, immediate family.

speakout · 19/01/2018 14:03

Horrible article.

If working Mums work and do everything that SAHM do why do they need to pay childminders and nurseries.
Women who look after young ones at home do a lot more housework/cleaning/entertaining/preparing food than the parents who have little ones in nursery.

PasstheStarmix · 19/01/2018 14:16

The article is the epitome of this thread especially the part about the SAHM being asked at the bus stop what she does all day. I’ve seen this kind of ignorance before. I don’t get why there’s threads like this? Why do people care what other families do? I see it from both sides and I don’t understand why it’s a competition. I don’t agree that one does more than the other af all. Whether Mums work or whether they stay at home why does it matter? As long as you and your family are happy who cares what others think.

Well said Pass!

g1itterati · 19/01/2018 14:18

The point is Starmix, it's not a competition Confused. Sure there will be all sorts of people, working or not, who do "more" than me, there will be others who do less. What am I or anyone else supposed to do about that?

Nobody actively seeks to make their lives harder though, do they. The truth is that if you are a SAHM, you are generally in that situation because you can afford to have that choice. That's the bottom line really and it's irrelevant what other people may or may not do.

PasstheStarmix · 19/01/2018 14:20

g1itterati That’s very true but so many makemit in to a competition don’t they. I wish mothers would just stick together as it’s hard enough no matter what route you go down.

PasstheStarmix · 19/01/2018 14:20

make it

Exactly.

speakout · 19/01/2018 14:21

you are generally in that situation because you can afford to have that choice.

Many mothers are in that position because they can't afford to have the choice.

Ariela · 19/01/2018 14:26

When I worked from home, I used to get everybody assume I wasn't working, so they'd drop their kids off, ask me to collect them from school/feed them, phone me to collect prescriptions, shopping, walk their dog, all sorts.
It really keeps you busy.
Now I no longer work as many hours from home I have more time. I tend to spend it doing more of the above though. Also OH has eased up on his work, and daughter tends to spend more time at home (daughter is at Uni locally) so the house is untidier so I seem to do more chores.

BattleCuntGalactica · 19/01/2018 14:27

I personally luxuriate in my Olympic sized solid gold swimming pool, filled with gold glitter infused water. When I'm not doing that, I have naked well hung muscled male attendants who massage my body with the most expensive high end oils, and pamper my every need from feeding me only the finest foods from diamond encrusted tweezers, and giving me the most glorious wines and cocktails known to man.

When I get very bored of that, I am carried to my gigantic marble bathroom and dipped into an equally gigantic bath filled with posh bubbles, and bathed appropriately. My hair is washed with special Unicorn Jizz shampoo, and my skin is thoroughly moisturised by the finest Dragon Spunk body oil. Both are heavily perfumed so I smell divine.

My husband is far too sick to interact, as he is 109 and currently lives in an iron lung. Of course i didn't marry him for his money, I loved the way the sun glinted on his Bugatti Veyron which he hasn't been able to drive for a long time now.

Now please do excuse me as I have an orgy to plan this evening with my manservants.

Chienrouge · 19/01/2018 14:30

I love Unicorn Jizz shampoo BattleCuntGalactica. Makes my hair so shimmery.

From my experience in London the friends who can afford to work pt are the lucky ones as childcare is so expensive. My salary would barely cover my childcare & travel, lunch etc so DH pays.

hollowtree · 19/01/2018 14:56

Battlecunt I want that life! I want well hung man servants!!!

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 19/01/2018 15:02

BattleCunt your life sounds seriously alluring and has given me something nice to dream of as I spend this dreary mundane Mid-January afternoon repeatedly wiping snot from my 3 year old's face!

Lloyd45 · 19/01/2018 17:38

Ride my horse, horse competitions, dog agility, dog training, trips to London for theatre and lunch. Meeting friends and family, holidays

Namechange16 · 19/01/2018 19:39

I think once children are of school age then the title SAHM is a moot point. In reality women are just 'Stay At Home Women.' They're not actually doing any mothering during the day are they.

I fully own up to the fact that when my 2 year old gets her free hours at 3, I will doss around on my 2 days off and do a dab of cleaning...will I be a SAHM?? Not in the true sense at all. I'll be a 'homemaker' or 'housewife'. After 2 kids I'll have paid my dues and will enjoy 2 days of quiet a week (I'm a Teacher the other days).
