Can you die from a UTI?

contiflo · 15/01/2018 22:00

I can't get a GP appointment until Friday and ooh can't get me an appointment tonight as they're fully booked.

I've got serious back pain, it burns when I pee, but the last few drops are so so sore and in the loo the last drops are just blood.

I have a temperature of 38.9 after paracetamol, I have a cough now and just generally feel like shite! I'm also starting to feel a bit sick. I'm drinking to try and flush all the crap out but it hurts :(

I know I'm overreacting but I genuinely thought OOH might be able to help.

You sound like you’ve got pyelonephritis. If OOH have refused to see you then you need to go to A&E this evening.

georgedawes · 15/01/2018 22:02

You poor thing. Could you try one of the online pharmacies for antibiotics? Think boots or superdrug offer the service.

autumnleaves101 · 15/01/2018 22:02

Go to the hospital love, hope you feel better soon

LadyPenelopeCantDance · 15/01/2018 22:04

Sounds more like it has travelled to your kidneys. I would call 111 and read the below.

www.nhs.uk/conditions/kidney-infection/

Bobbiepin · 15/01/2018 22:04

Theoretically yes but by the sounds of things you aren't there yet. The infection would need to travel to your kidneys and do a lot of damage before death is a real risk. By then you would be passing a lot of blood and in too much pain to be asking MN for advice. Definitely get to docs asap but don't panic. Keep up with the paracetamol and drink as much water as you can. When you think you've drunk enough, drink more.

Youcouldbemysilversprings · 15/01/2018 22:04

My mum got septacemia from a UTI, get yourself seen!!

FireCracker2 · 15/01/2018 22:04

Ring out of hours GP

Pigglesworth · 15/01/2018 22:04

It can become a kidney infection and even progress towards sepsis (which can kill you). You may need intravenous antibiotics. Are you on any antibiotics? Given your high temperature, if you can't get a doctor's appointment today I would go to the hospital/A&E. Especially if you are feeling sick and especially if you are feeling hot and cold/shivering. This has happened to me and hospital/IV antibiotics was the right decision!

JustVent · 15/01/2018 22:04

Yes you can.

You can die from any infection. You don’t need A&E though you just need to speak to a doctor to get a AB’s prescription sent to your nearest 24 hour pharmacy.

Best of luck, I had the same once but with mastitis. So ill.

Littlecaf · 15/01/2018 22:04

Keep drinking. Get a bottle of water, sit on the loo and keep filling it up and try and flush it out.

contiflo · 15/01/2018 22:04

I'm going to ring 111 again and see if they can fit me in. If not I'm
Going to A&E

I think you could die from blood poisoning in a very severe untreated case as with any infection but highly unlikely! In your shoes I would go to a&Zoe they will sort you out. If it wasn’t for the bloody pee I would suggest self treat with baking soda to try and flush m it out and/or use one of those apps where you can see a doctor on Skype. I’ve used it when I’ve needed antibiotics for a uti, I am prone to them. It cost about £50 all told but I was desperate and got a prescription for trimethoprim sent to a local pharmacy within about 10 mins of the video consultation. Definitely NOT a regular GP replacement but it worked for me in a bind. But a&e might be your best bet in an emergency

FinnegansCake · 15/01/2018 22:06

You mustn’t wait till Friday! If you are passing blood in your urine and have a temperature and feel sick, go to A and E if OOH can’t see you. You need antibiotics as soon as possible.

TossDaily · 15/01/2018 22:07

Use Push Doctor until you can be seen. I had antibiotics prescribed for a UTI using that app. Did the trick.

I really sympathise, it's dreadful.

Pigglesworth · 15/01/2018 22:09

I just wanted to add, in my case the infection had travelled to my kidneys and although there was blood in my urine (picked up by tests in the hospital) it wasn’t visible to me. It was a severe/serious situation but I would have been able to post on Mumsnet. I just wanted to say this because this can be a very serious situation but not necessarily initially feel as bad as it actually medically is. Decline can be sudden. The back pain suggests to me that the infection may already have travelled to the kidneys.

JellyTots123 · 15/01/2018 22:10

111 now have suffered myself all my life and could lead to something more serious if not dealt with sooner. Flowers

jaseyraex · 15/01/2018 22:11

Definitely sounds like a developing kidney infection. I ended up with a kidney infection from an untreated UTI when I was about 9. My mum thought I was playing up to get out of school, she felt very guilty when she had to take me to hospital and they kept me in for a week! Get yourself to A&E before it gets any worse. Hope you're better soon OP.

Mogginthemog · 15/01/2018 22:11

It sounds like the infection has now travelled up into a kidney. You will need antibiotics if possible tonight. Depending on the severity of your symptoms they may want you to go to a&e. Glad you are phoning 111.

Sparklesdontshine · 15/01/2018 22:12

That sounds awful, I hope you manage to get to A&E ok Flowers

Pigglesworth · 15/01/2018 22:13

@contiflo - Sounds like a sensible course of action. Don't doubt your instincts!

BertieBotts · 15/01/2018 22:13

No, but you can die from sepsis which is a complication from infection.

Go to A&E or at least out of hours - you'll need a blood test to find out if it's advanced enough they will want you on IV antibiotics. I ignored one once (just didn't notice all symptoms coinciding!) and ended up in hospital. Not nice but much better than waiting it out! I was only in for a couple of nights.

MadisonMontgomery · 15/01/2018 22:14

It’s very unlikely. What do you think people did before antibiotics - they didn’t all die from UTI’s!

Fairylea · 15/01/2018 22:14

Definitely go to A and E. Untreated utis can turn extremely nasty.

BootsAndCatsAndBootsAndCats · 15/01/2018 22:15

Yes, I think A&E if ooh really can't help. I got a kidney infection from a uti years ago and it was awful. I ended up on iv antibiotics to clear the infection. Hope you feel better soon.

Clicksandstones · 15/01/2018 22:17

Yes. Your kidneys can become damaged from even a short infection if it has travelled to your kidneys. I was hospitalised with your symptoms. Get seen tonight, even if it's A&E. You're not wasting their time. Good luck. I feel your pain Flowers
