Can you die from a UTI?

contiflo · 15/01/2018 22:00

I can't get a GP appointment until Friday and ooh can't get me an appointment tonight as they're fully booked.

I've got serious back pain, it burns when I pee, but the last few drops are so so sore and in the loo the last drops are just blood.

I have a temperature of 38.9 after paracetamol, I have a cough now and just generally feel like shite! I'm also starting to feel a bit sick. I'm drinking to try and flush all the crap out but it hurts :(

I know I'm overreacting but I genuinely thought OOH might be able to help.

Hopefully you recover quickly op.
Just wanted to add for others that I explained my situation to receptionist recently - I knew I had a UTI & they let me speak to GP by phone & then left a prescription for me to collect. GP said that, as I’d had uti before & responded quickly to trimethoprim, she was content to prescribe after a phone consultation.
A friend also got a swift prescription for the same problem using the Lloyds pharmacy online doctor.
Cystitis is a bitch.

Stylinson · 16/01/2018 11:22

I had a kidney infection over Christmas. Have never felt so ill. Started as cystitis/urine infection and within a couple of days I was bed ridden, feeling like I had the worst flu ever. Took 2 different antibiotics to get rid of it and I’m still feeling a bit wiped out now

Pigglesworth · 16/01/2018 12:04

A great outcome OP, I was a bit worried for you, thank you for updating us.

endofthelinefinally · 16/01/2018 12:09

I have a dear friend who ended up on dialysis and subsequently a transplant after a neglected UTI.
Living with a transplant is very hard.
UTIs should be taken seriously.

Littlecaf · 16/01/2018 19:41

Hope you are on the road to recovery OP Flowers

kitkatsky · 16/01/2018 20:06

There should be triage at all doctors surgeries to head off these situations. I’m glad you’re ok OP. I first got a bad UTI at 25 and didn’t recognise for what it was, a week later had awful back pain and no appetite, couldn’t even keep down water. Eventually went to OOH who gave me an injection to stop me vomiting and sent me home with mega painkillers and antiemetics. I slept for 72 hours straight and every time I woke I had to write down the time and tablets I’d taken as I had no idea last time I’d been awake or taken stuff. oOH told me I prob had a kidney infection. Worst I’ve ever felt. IV antibiotics are awesome tho so hope they sort you ASAP

DeathByMascara · 16/01/2018 20:11

You can. I developed sepsis from a UTI when pregnant, was admitted to HDU & the theatre was scrubbed in preparation for an emergency section to try and save my life. Kidneys were shutting down & had fluid on my lungs. Oddly enough, I was in no pain, I just felt absolutely dreadful!

Glad you’ve been seen and are on the mend - just wanted to share my story!

jaseyraex · 16/01/2018 20:13

Glad to hear you're on the mend OP! Never doubt yourself. You'll be good as new in no time Flowers

mummyhaschangedhername · 16/01/2018 20:13

Glad your being treated seriously. Hope you feel better soon.

greathat · 16/01/2018 20:14

So pleased you are sorted, hope you are home soon

contiflo · 17/01/2018 00:28

Still have a raging temperature and feeling pretty rotten. It's impossible to sleep in hospital! All my neighbours are really poorly and I feel so sad for their families.

Seriously people if you think you have a uti get it treated don't be a dick like me and leave it. They think I'm still at high risk of sepsis so I have 30 minute ons.

I'm glad you're being looked after. If part of the issue regarding sleep is the noise, I recommend silicone earplugs (Bioears or a generic knockoff) - they are amazing at blocking out the sound of people. Won't do anything for the obs unfortunately but can help if the bay is generally noisy. Hope you're feeling better soon!

contiflo · 17/01/2018 00:46

@southboundagain thank you I will put them on my list of things DH needs to bring in! I'm on the medical assessment unit and they're trying to find a permanent bed for me but not happening at the moment.

Tonight one of my colleagues is working the night shift and she's trying to sort out some decent pain relief, it's so busy here it's insane. It's like a train station people in and out all the time!

Make sure you rest properly OP even when Home. I had this over Christmas with bleeding. I was shivering in agony and bleeding and a bit ga ga and the out of ours nurse practitioner sent me home. It took two lots of anti biotic to quash it. I work part time and probably went back to work a little too soon and three days later I get the flu.
Tae care don’t beat yourself up. Mine started by chills and feeling uncharactistically cold and shivering and unable to get warm for an hour or t o after a walk into town on a very cold day. I went to the loo suspected cystitis and within half an hour I was bleeding and in agony so it can come on very, very quickly.

LondonLassInTheCountry · 17/01/2018 01:25

Never listen to people saying

"DONT GO TO A&E"

Think there was only one or two tho!!

mrsgumpy · 17/01/2018 01:32

My friend ended up with septicemia and spent three weeks in hospital after a neglected UTI. She could have died.

RustyPaperclips · 17/01/2018 01:59

An untreated UTI which went to my kidneys made me feel horrendous. I should have seen a doctor sooner, please don't make the same mistake as me

notangelinajolie · 17/01/2018 02:04

Yes you can. My mum is in hospital fighting for her life right now. GP wasn't interested - after 3 home visits said her urine sample was clear and we just needed to keep her warm. 3 weeks later we were still waiting for the blood people to come and take bloods. Delerium set in, so on Sunday in desperation I dialled 111. First responder came and took one look at her and within minutes she was being blue lighted to a&e. This morning I was asked my thoughts on DNR if she suffered a cardiac arrest. Can't sleep - dreading the phone ringing.

LondonLassInTheCountry · 17/01/2018 02:05

Hospitals now ask everyone about DNR

ButtPlugInMyHalloweenHaul · 17/01/2018 02:20

Madison prior to antibiotics of course people died from UTIs. They died from dental abscesses and cuts and injuries and things we consider simple infections. THAT is the miracle of antibiotics!

CaledonianQueen · 17/01/2018 02:21

So many hugs notangelina, I will pray for your Mum, hopefully, they find the right antibiotic and your Mum is on the mend come morning. I had septicemia at the end of last year and since I was released I haven't had a week go by without a district nurse coming to check on me and take bloods/ urine for testing. It was their (Doctors) neglect that could have killed me and they well know it!

The way your Mum was treated was appalling, I would be sure to complain no matter the result. I was lucky and the hospital went through my local G.P practice, which is likely what has scared them into better care now.

I know how scared you are, I have spent several nights worrying that the phone would ring because Mum had sepsis (UTI) or a bloodclot on the lung, or Dad had a massive heart attack and was given a triple bypass. Doctors today can do amazing things and I luckily have two parents who have pulled through, hopefully your Mum will too Flowers

Flowers to you too OP I have been there with the constant OBS and the lack of sleep. Although I am lucky as our trust has built a huge new part of the hospital where there are no wards, everyone has their own room (unless on assessment ward). Hopefully, your infection marker lowers so you can get home with oral antibiotics. Drink lots and don't be afraid to ask for more water in-between meal times.

Not the point of the thread, but water intoxication can kill, so please ignore the advice of some of the posters, and never drink insane amounts of water.

Glad to hear you are getting treatment OP, hope you get a proper bed soon.

Alessandrocopper · 17/01/2018 06:01

This should be emailed to all the dickheads who post ridiculous posts making people feel like criminals for wanting to see a doctor. Practically anywhere in the the world, people don't hesitate to see a doctor when they are ill and only on this site is it frowned upon. The competitive dicks who try to save the NHS money should be ashamed of themselves.
