Can you die from a UTI?

I can't get a GP appointment until Friday and ooh can't get me an appointment tonight as they're fully booked.

I've got serious back pain, it burns when I pee, but the last few drops are so so sore and in the loo the last drops are just blood.

I have a temperature of 38.9 after paracetamol, I have a cough now and just generally feel like shite! I'm also starting to feel a bit sick. I'm drinking to try and flush all the crap out but it hurts :(

I know I'm overreacting but I genuinely thought OOH might be able to help.

I'm waiting now to be called in. DH is in the car waiting to probably take me back to the A&E department by our house. Thank you for all your help. Glad I didn't wait

Well done. Good luck.

BakewellTart01 · 15/01/2018 22:59

Glad you are being seen. I hope you get the right medication and get some rest.

Mogginthemog · 15/01/2018 23:05

Good luck. So relieved you are being checked out. I don’t think I’ve ever felt so ill as when I had a kidney infection. And it came on within a few hours so they seem to be able to take hold pretty quickly.

Changeusername · 15/01/2018 23:16

I had what youve described and ended up in hospital for 5 days on iv antibiotics x hope ur feeling better soon op x

KatnissMellark · 15/01/2018 23:20

Hope you're ok op!

QOD · 16/01/2018 07:06

Ugh. Misery

FYI Poundland stock a cystitis relief sachet thingy. I have a box always in the first aid kit ... it can head it off at the very start.
Neutralises the burn at the least. No good at your stage obviously

ciele · 16/01/2018 07:18

Yes. I went into septic shock, multi organ failure!
Although I didn’t have typical symptoms. I was lucky to live an am now amputee.

huha · 16/01/2018 07:19

How are you OP?

ChasedByBees · 16/01/2018 07:26

Hope you’re OK OP.

LoudestRoar · 16/01/2018 07:31

Hope you're ok OP.
ciele that sounds horrific Flowers

Sleephead1 · 16/01/2018 07:31

Hope your ok op my mum got urinary sepsis she had high temp, shaky and was sick. My dad took her to hospital and she was admitted they said that people can just go to sleep with that and not wake up. So I'm very pleased you got seen and disappointed ooh tried to put you off till next day with those symptoms.

HermionesRightHook · 16/01/2018 07:58

Definitely the right this OP. I would have gone to A&E with this had I not got the appointment you've arranged - that level of infection and pain is an emergency as far as I'm concerned because people do get horrible complications from UTI so that are left too long. And the pain is excruciating.

whiskyowl · 16/01/2018 08:00

Hope you are doing OK, OP.

contiflo · 16/01/2018 10:36

Hi just a bit of an update. I got admitted straight the medical assessment unit with a letter from my GP. On IV antibiotics and feeling a damn sight better than I did yesterday. I have a kidney infection and a bad one it would seem. I also have a chest infection which is unrelated but on antibiotics for that.

Thank you for not letting me ignore it

Cloudhopping · 16/01/2018 10:44

Really pleased you have the right treatment Op. Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Clandestino · 16/01/2018 10:51

You normally can't die but the pain will make you feel like you wish for that.
This could already be a kidney infection. Fucking painful, fucking awful, makes you feel like shit. And you normally need antibiotics and plenty of fluids.

DesignedForLife · 16/01/2018 10:55

Glad you're getting treatment. I have a family member who got sepsis from UTI, so they shouldn't be ignored.

HidingFromTheWorld · 16/01/2018 10:56

I had acute pyelonephritis when 32 weeks pregnant and I was in so much pain I couldn’t speak.

I ended up in hospital for a week, on IV antibiotics with Pethidine injections until they got things under control.

You need to be seen ASAP. A UTI causes major complications in the elderly and is often underestimated as ‘just’ being a mild infection.

Get well soon.

HidingFromTheWorld · 16/01/2018 10:57

Just seen your update, feel better soon OP. I fully sympathise!

MissDuke · 16/01/2018 10:59

OP I am glad you got seen, I was concerned reading your op as you sounded so unwell. I am pleased you are on the turn now, IV antibiotics are great stuff and you clearly badly needed them. Take care Flowers

ididntmeanitlikethat · 16/01/2018 11:03

Glad you're getting better OP [fllowers] and well done to everyone who recommended getting treatment immediately.

I also left a UTI untreated too long (didn't realise how serious these can be) and ended up in hospital with septic shock. Still recovering and wouldn't wish it on anyone Sad

Didntcomeheretofuckspiders · 16/01/2018 11:07

Glad you’ve been admitted OP sounds really nasty!

amusedbush · 16/01/2018 11:15

Glad you're getting treatment.

My mum was blue lighted to hospital last year with a terrible UTI/kidney infection that had her delirious with fever - she was in and out of consciousness and babbling nonsense. She was kept in for days on a drip and it took weeks before she was well enough to be back to at work full time.

TheOrigRightsofwomen · 16/01/2018 11:18

My son suspected he had a UTI, couldn't get a GP appt for a few days, called 111 who advised him to call the GP back saying that 111 really wanted him to see a doc urgently.
They saw him that day. So I guess in this case 111 acted as a kind of GP triage.
