@flyingbird Smile most people record the road and users around them not themselves! It is odd though as it's not very focused driving!

Mumofkids · 08/04/2018 20:02

Now daddytotriplet girls has posted about a multimac and I'm so confused because it's not an ad, but out of all of these accounts I wish it bloody was and that they had got it for free!!

wishwish · 08/04/2018 20:04

I have just watched Insta Stories and every single picture has writing over the top of each story. Every single one. This I feel is something that has crept up on me, very gradually.

Now the cynic in me is saying there must be a reason for this...

I know the Instagram algorithm has brought many new problems and it is important for influencers to up the engagement time spent on a post, to make them more valuable to the brands.

So if everyone has to hold their finger down to read everything, is this a way to up engagement time? Hope this makes sense.

@Mumofkids I'm confused about that multi car seat thing on his insta.

He says it isn't an ad but why post in all that detail about it if it isn't? I can't imagine getting that excited about a car seat.

Mumofkids · 08/04/2018 20:27

@pavlovaprincess do you know what's sad? I had 4 under 5 and I can imagine getting very excited about it 🤣 I guess if you spend £2000 (with baby seats?) on something then you should feel pretty excited! That would buy me a new car Grin

CadyHeron · 08/04/2018 20:28

He'll have put it's not an ad to show that it's not an ad,as that's what people are wanting. It made clear. So I think it's good that he has.
If he's talking about a car seat, it stands to reason that he'll state if it's any good, what it does, so other people can see what it's like.
Just posting "my new car seat's good" and nothing else won't exactly engage people.

Mumofkids · 08/04/2018 20:29

@flyingbird it would be so creepy wouldn't it! I'd forget and do something hideously embarrassing no doubt!
Interesting point @wish does holding down increase engagement?

nipersvest · 08/04/2018 20:36

@wishwish you're right about the adding wording to instastories, not just the holding your finger on it to pause, but it also encourages people to watch multiple times to read it all.

PavlovaPrincess · 08/04/2018 20:36

@Mumofkids £2000?!! Friggin' hell!

I hadn't realised they were so expensive!

wishwish · 08/04/2018 20:37

Mumofkids - didn't mean to change the subject there, sometimes by the time I post the conversation has moved on. I'm learning lol

miamimice · 08/04/2018 20:37

Another blogger with a car seat like that also said that it wasn’t an ad but they got a percentage off the price. If you get a discount to feature something it is an advert imo. Not saying that is what has happened in this case but I suppose it depends on your definition of advert as ever 🤔

Mumofkids · 08/04/2018 20:38

@wish I don't think there's any rules! It's crazy when threads are busy! Very interesting point which I'd not thought about 😊

Mumofkids · 08/04/2018 20:42

@pavlovaprincess the 4 seater is £1499 and each babyseat £269 (they have 3 babies! Obvs 😆) so that a lot! How I laughed when Clemmie T said they were cheaper than a new car!

wishwish · 08/04/2018 20:43

£2000 for a car seat!!

Niper - Every single post had multiple writing on, different sizes, different colours. You can barely see the pictures.

PavlovaPrincess · 08/04/2018 20:43

@miamimice exactly. They all seem to have different interpretations of the rules.

https://www.asa.org.uk/news/online-influencers-is-it-an-ad.html

Some info on it here. But interpretations on if it's an ad or not vary depending on whether the brand has control over the item, if they've paid cash or 'gifted' an item etc.

Each blogger seems to have a different understanding of what makes a post an ad or not.

This is an interesting article, written from a FTC standpoint but ranking influencers in terms of how transparent they are. Disclosure of gifts bumps you well up the rankings. Would be good if we had a U.K. equivalent of this.

www.thefashionlaw.com/home/the-annual-brand-and-influencer-report-the-good-bad-and-highly-problematic

kirinm · 08/04/2018 21:55

The FTC rules seem quite good, don't they? They don't like 'paid partnership' or AD being hidden. Influencers should read this- as should the brands (although I appreciate it would be the ASA that is relevant here).

miamimice · 08/04/2018 22:00

Definitely think the FTC are ahead of the game. That article references the ASA as well though and notes that they are toughening up over here as well. I don’t believe there can be much material difference between what the FTC deems as acceptable practice and what the ASA deems ok. The only difference would be their ability to sanction depending on which jurisdiction you sit in, I would think anyway. Definitely worth a read.

miamimice · 08/04/2018 22:02

“As we told you last year, fashion’s most successful personal style influencers and major fashion and cosmetics brands, alike, are at the root of a massive deceptive marketing scheme that has the effect of misleading consumers.”

Just leaving that here Wink

FuckItPassMeTheWine · 08/04/2018 23:30

@miamimice thanks for the link , some interesting information there and for also explaining the ca scandal .

more people will start to click on that the Instagram accounts they follow aren't being transparent with them and are just using the "family angle" as a sneaky route in to advertise without advising "it's an advert" it's misleading . Surely Instagram should now have to follow the same guidelines s tv commercials with this crap ?

On a another note I really loathe people's "stories" coming up on the top ribbon as "suggestions ", nope I don't want to follow them and neither do I give a cack about their story . It's the constant trying to force you to see things that you haven't signed up for that's annoying. I can only hope that more people start to feel like I and eventually Instagram crawls off into the social media grave yard to join the likes of periscope and vine (I miss vine )

3asAbird · 08/04/2018 23:39

Am I correct in thinking ftc is USA and ASA is uk only?

What's happened in Ireland lately as been so much blogger scandal.

Also read Australia become bit stricter.

What about rest of Europe or Canada?

Would whats seems happen in this country be unlawful in others?
