"Red sauce".....you mean ketchup!!

I keep hearing people saying red sauce, it's only recently I've ever heard this....jad ketchup suddenly become a dirty word?!

No crashbangwallop - they are not. But I had a king rib for the first time in about 10 years, and it was fab!

We say tomato sauce. Ketchup was an Americanism when I was a kid. Never called it red sauce.

Just as an aside, in Dutch tomato sauce is ketchup. Soy sauce is ketjap. The difference to the English ear is tiny. Cue much confusion in Chinese restaurants.

Red sauce here is the generic term for any tomato based sauce on pasta (no matter what else is added). As in ‘I can’t be bothered to cook tonight - pasta and red sauce ok?’.

Tomato ketchup/sauce is what you put on your chips. I have no idea what’s in brown sauce (but I like it’s tang!).

I have a speech impediment that makes it difficult for me to pronounce the "ketch" sound, same as "catch". So it'll come out as keshup/cash (instead of catch).
This sounds very babyish and I've had the piss taken out of me for it loads.
So, it's red sauce to me (and I avoid other words too where possible)

We use ketchup/tomato sauce/red sauce interchangeably.

DH's family occasionally say 'tommy sauce' which I hate but I assume it's regional.

ketchup just sounds American It isn't, the origins of the word are in Asia.

I've heard people say red sauce in the north west but I think it's mainly when someone is doing a bacon butty run. Like "what sauce do you want, brown or red?" I usually say ketchup. Thinking about it though, brown sauce is a terrible name for a condiment. Makes it sound so very grim.

I absolutely hate the word ketchup.
It's either tomato sauce or red sauce in our house. We call HP sauce brown sauce so red sauce makes sense.

I still view mushroom ketchup with suspicion.

It is Dip Dip according to my 3 year old and they are very firm about the matter

My Italian friend calls her home made tomato ragu 'red sauce'

Seeing it so often now, makes sauce look like a made up word.

I made some mushroom ketchup once.
It grew blue mould on top.

On the subject of juice... squash was diluting juice when I was growing up but these days I usually refer to it as it's flavour so if the kids whinge for my irn bru which comes in a tin not a can I'll say "no there's plenty of apple & black currant/orange & pineapple for you lot"
