Is it snobby of me to not want it in my bedroom?

DP wants us to have a TV in the bedroom.

We already have a massive TV in the living room, when actually when I lived alone, I never had one in the first place (would just stream films if in the mood for watching something).

I told him it just didn't sit right with me, a TV in the bedroom, and he said I was being a snob.

But I'm right aren't I?

Can anyone help me pinpoint why exactly it feels wrong? It just does to me, anyway!

Have you got a telly in your bedroom?

Mine is in proportion to the room, has a functioning off button, is cleaned weekly by the cleaner and does not emit any light once off. Am I allowed to watch it now?

echt · 11/01/2018 20:42

is cleaned weekly by the cleaner

This alone absolves you of all chaviness.:o

Having a tv in the bedroom is bad for your sleep and bad for your sex life.
Maybe it’s snobby to not want to live that way. In that case I’d rather be a snob.

Sparklingbrook · 11/01/2018 20:52

There's plenty of examples on this long thread of people who sleep just fine and have plenty of sex despite having a TV in the bedroom.

The TV also has on off switch believe it or not over which they have control. Imagine that. Shock

And plenty of people who’d rather not have one because it disrupts their sleep. You seem to be on a one woman mission to persuade everyone that they need a TV in their room! Why do you care so much?

beautifuldaytosavelives · 11/01/2018 21:04

We have one for when the big tv is commandeered for football and I have it on if I’m pottering in the bedroom or maybe sorting drawers out or something. It’s personal preference and a debate along the lines of red or white wine, coffee or tea...ie. no final verdict

Sparklingbrook · 11/01/2018 21:13

Why do you care so much Chienrouge? Grin

brizzledrizzle · 11/01/2018 21:13

@sparklingbrook and have plenty of sex despite having a TV in the bedroom.

That's because of the special videos that they watch....

Sparklingbrook · 11/01/2018 21:16

Ah but that would involve a video player. That's a whole other thread.

MumsTheWordYouKnow · 11/01/2018 21:22

Totally agree. Dust catching eye sores. Now don’t get me wrong I enjoy TV in bed but just on a 12” iPad. Good justification for one too as as cheap as some TVs, can steam anything then inc live TV. Also the speakers on them are 4 way and very good.

MumsTheWordYouKnow · 11/01/2018 21:27

I use an iPad mini in the kitchen if I wanting to watch TV other than that just one TV in the lounge. I don’t like the idea of a TV in every room as I don’t like big screens (or small screens) everywhere. I prefer to spend the money on iPads as they’re multi purpose.

BonnieF · 11/01/2018 21:33

We have only 1 TV in the house, in the sitting room. We have a radio in every room, however, tuned to Radio 4 or Test Match Special.

I don't want a TV in my bedroom because I travel for work and spend lots of time lying in hotel beds on my own watching TV, so I don't want to do that at home.

MsJudgemental · 11/01/2018 21:34

Sitting in bed with the telly on at the moment!

thisonehasalittlecar · 11/01/2018 21:57

The Queen has a TV in her bedroom, fyi

If it's the aesthetics bothering you, you could have it in a cabinet so it can be shut away when it's not on. I agree with pps saying it's bad for sleep but probably better than ipads, laptops etc because you sit further away from it.

Catra · 11/01/2018 21:59

I've never had a TV in my bedroom and for the past couple of years haven't had a TV full stop - one in the living room broke and we never got round to replacing it and found we never missed it. Streaming programmes through my laptop works fine for me and I'm not averse to watching things on my laptop in bed. And yes, I do have a TV license for this.

Bahhhhhumbug · 11/01/2018 22:06

Not just the noise though even if he wore headphones it's the light from it as it's not like your own ipad or whatever behind the other person it's pointing at the bed.

LittleWitch · 11/01/2018 22:22

Only one TV in the house, in the sitting room, and I wouldn’t have one in the bedroom, but strangely I love having telly on in the room in a hotel. Confused

mumof3boys33 · 11/01/2018 22:27

I like all the suggestions of streaming. Does everyone else have fast enough internet to stream? I can't even listen to radio on my phone via Wi-fi due to slow internet. Our speed is about 0.5 and 1mbps on a good day. 😩 we can't watch iplayer or itv hub. I missed the final part of a drama recently. I really wanted to see it, so I put iplayer on using Amazon fire box. The programme was an hour long, due it stopping every few minutes it took 2 hours 20 mins to watch. OH thought I was bonkers and decided he'd rather miss the last one 😂

RainyApril · 11/01/2018 22:31

echt, that's a relief I'm having a class crisis after following this threadGrin

caringcarer · 11/01/2018 22:40

We have one but when I think the only time we use it is when the Olympics were in Australia and so we wanted to watch in the middle of the night as both love sport. If I was ill in bed I might watch a DVD though.

Growingboys · 11/01/2018 23:08

I was snobby about tellies in bedrooms until DH made me and now it's the best thing ever.

Last week I bought a 43 inch smart telly for our room and I love it. Having said which I've spent this evening reading in bed while DH watched Homeland next to me.

Catra · 11/01/2018 23:16

Re. streaming, I have Virgin Media fibre optic broadband and I've never had a problem with its speed.

Ellyess · 12/01/2018 00:12

I don’t think it’s snobby to not have it in the bedroom. People who have trouble sleeping should not watch telly in bed or have one in the bedroom. The bedroom is for peaceful sleep and perhaps for changing your clothes in. I do have a small telly in my bedroom now but my needs changed when I became disabled and I go to bed very early, sometimes around 5-6 pm so I’m not ready to sleep but just have to lie down because of a lot of pain. You should be able to do what you want in your own bedroom.

JanKind · 12/01/2018 00:59

I'm with bitsandbobsalot. Other things for the bedroom TV isn't one of them..Shock

milliemolliemou · 12/01/2018 01:10

Just no. Haven't RTFT but no.

Gross. Ditto Ipads, phones running stuff. Does no one want to sleep? chat?

But TVs - even slim line ones hung up as pictures or coming out of beds - are just an intrusion. I'd say never in children's rooms but then they have Ipads. At which point I'd turn the wifi off
