Is it snobby of me to not want it in my bedroom?

DP wants us to have a TV in the bedroom.

We already have a massive TV in the living room, when actually when I lived alone, I never had one in the first place (would just stream films if in the mood for watching something).

I told him it just didn't sit right with me, a TV in the bedroom, and he said I was being a snob.

But I'm right aren't I?

Can anyone help me pinpoint why exactly it feels wrong? It just does to me, anyway!

Have you got a telly in your bedroom?

'Is it snobby' is SO the wrong question. This isn't about what anyone else thinks, except perhaps other users of your bedroom.

stardust18 · 11/01/2018 19:09

Ive got a Tv in the bedroom and love it. It’s lovely snuggle up and watch TV in bed. I know everyone says how bad it is for your sleep but I could sleep on a washing line so I don’t think it effects me.

RainyApril · 11/01/2018 19:09

But since op said her main objection was that it was 'downmarket', she does actually sound like a snob.

LilaoftheGreenwood · 11/01/2018 19:09

Even aside from the sleep quality issues, to me it would feel like having the oven in the bedroom, just weird and wrong. I am odd though.

Ooohlalalala · 11/01/2018 19:12

No, you're not snobby, but your husband is a drongo. Since you married him, though, you're going to have to reach a compromise. Small tv in the sitting room and even smaller one in the bedroom?

Sparklingbrook · 11/01/2018 19:14

TVs are the same as ovens now. it's getting complicated. Grin

Jeannie78 · 11/01/2018 19:17

No, absolutely not, however I still adhere to the old adage that there is an inverse relationship between the size of one's television and the size of one's intellect.

LilaoftheGreenwood · 11/01/2018 19:19

Sparklingbrook · 11/01/2018 19:19

Old and unheard of adage Jeannie78. What's your source?

Sparklingbrook · 11/01/2018 19:21

Lila the oven is the one that gets very hot, the TV is the one with the moving picture on the front. If you bear that in mind you'll be grand. Grin

Bedrooms are for sleeping and it’s a proven fact that any blue light from a screen can affect your sleep. So no tablets, lap tops or phones! 😲

sunshine11 · 11/01/2018 19:42

Terrible for sleep from so many perspectives (blue light, EMF etc). Perhaps you need to issue an ultimatum "it's me or the TV"!

MindfulBear · 11/01/2018 19:46

I know what you mean OP. So DH bought a bed which hides the TV in the foot board. Hurrah!
It comes up on hydraulics. We love it. Don’t use it much but means we can get away from the kids and snuggle in front of the telly occasionally.

mumof3boys33 · 11/01/2018 19:46

We have far too many TVs in the whole house. We have a playroom where ds2 has his Xbox. So he uses that one, a tv in the kitchen that I often put on because I hate silence (often I put the radio on it) obviously we have a tv in the living room. Then we have 4 bedrooms with one in each. Ds3 has his on for half hour in the morning while the older 2 have breakfast and leave for school. Ds1 often wants to watch different to us, so he watches in his room.
We have a tv in our room. I often go up and watch it at about 9pm when OH is watching quest on the living room tv.
Now if I get into bed with the tv off I can’t skeep. It often takes me a good hour or more as I start worrying about various things, or start thinking about things I need to do etc. If I put the tv on I fall asleep in a very quickly. So for me it’s a must. It does mean I wake up later and need to turn it off though!

jessebuni · 11/01/2018 19:49

It’s not being a snob it’s just a difference of opinion. Husband wanted a tv in our room and I didn’t really see the point. We compromised and do have a tv in the bedroom but it’s only allowed to be used on Friday and Saturday nights and Sunday mornings. That way on week nights it’s not interrupting our sleep patterns or anything and husband still gets to occasionally have a lazy Sunday watching tv in bed.

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 11/01/2018 19:51

I've never wanted a TV in the bedroom. Thankfully, DH doesn't either.

The DC would probably love the idea though!

NotSureThisIsWhatIWant · 11/01/2018 20:01

I come from a place where every bride to be is told by married women not to have a TV in the bedroom, to protect intimacy (or the ability to listen each other when you are winding down at the end of the day and to protect your sexual life)

There must be some element of truth on that. Considering the amount of superficial crap and sports my ex watched on television I would ha been inclined to kick him on the balls if he had brought all that shit and it’s noise into the bedroom, at the end of the day, it is the only peaceful place in the house.

Sparklingbrook · 11/01/2018 20:04

Where is this place Not? The Home Counties?

NotSureThisIsWhatIWant · 11/01/2018 20:09

This is common in Mediterranean countries, it doesn’t mean everyone abide for it or pass the advice though Smile

BunsyGirl · 11/01/2018 20:11

We have a massive tv in our bedroom (but bedroom has huge vaulted roof so tv is in proportion to size of room). It is mainly me that watches it while husband and kids watch football downstairs! I could go into the playroom and watch the one in there but I prefer the oasis of calm that is my bedroom. It doesn’t affect my sleep because I don’t watch it when I am meant to be sleeping, I watch it when I want to get away from the crap on the main tv in the living room!

simiisme · 11/01/2018 20:13

YANB-U or snobby. No screens in any of our bedrooms - too tempting to watch crap and not go to sleep.
Just books and bedside lamps.

PickAChew · 11/01/2018 20:14

The only reason we have a TV in our bedroom right now is because we're sleeping in the Livingroom while we have a new roof installed and fix the knackered mess that is our upstairs.

It's not even working properly at the moment because the scaffolding is blocking the dish and the aerial doesn't appear to actually be connected.

PickAChew · 11/01/2018 20:14

But no, not snobby, in the least.

AL75 · 11/01/2018 20:23

It's not snobby at all. It's just very bad feng shui. You shouldn't have a massive technological device in the room like that. Bedroom should be a place from calm and tranquility Smile

yulefool · 11/01/2018 20:24

Funny, I love the massive tv in our bedroom - I find death in paradise or similar the best sleeping pill ever!

The nice thing about being nearly 40 is that I no longer care if people believe I’m chavvy
