AIBU to think Blue Peter is NOT the best kids tv programme of all time?

According to a panel of experts it is.

I always thought it was gentle, sentimental clap trap that your parents wanted you to watch to keep you a child forever.

Personally I think the top title should have gone to Maid Marian and her Merry Men or Thunderbirds.

What's your top tv show?

@sonjadog Ziggy?

Loved Grange Hill back in the day and really wanted to have hair that flicked like the girls in the photo - they were the ultimate in sophistication.

Jassmells · 09/01/2018 22:12

Grange Hill all the way. Couldn't believe when it got canned for "no longer being relevant" what kids don't go to school now?

TheHolidayArmadillo · 09/01/2018 22:14

Hey Duggee is hands down the best kids programme of all time.

Agree with the PP who said that Blue Peter is what adults think kids should be watching.

Tiswas would have been good in it's time, when there wasn't much kids tv around and the alternative was taking turns with the neighbour children to throw sticks at a rock.

Blue Peter was boring and worthy and was all about what adults thought children should like. I preferred Magpie, Crackerjack, Tiswas and Grange Hill.

FlouncyDoves · 09/01/2018 22:17

Fun House, Get Your Own Back, Finders Keepers.

And for more modern times Horrible Histories.

MintCassis · 09/01/2018 22:21

I liked Knightmare & Maid Marion too.

My top would be The Wild House, Boot Street Band, The Demon Headmaster, The Queen's Nose, and Mike & Angelo.

Fluffiest · 09/01/2018 22:27

Maid Marian was amazing! But my top place has to go to the Animals of Farthing Wood. Oh the heartache!

NancyDonahue · 09/01/2018 22:30

Cheggars Plays Pop, Take Hart and Runaround were my favourites. There were also some good dramas. A break in the sun and Seaview are the ones that I remember well.

coldcanary · 09/01/2018 22:33

YANBU, Dick & Dom were far better! Put it on by accident one Saturday when I’d been up all night with poorly DS, they made him laugh for the first time in a week so it became regular viewing for us. Bogies was a work of genius Grin

OliviaStabler · 09/01/2018 22:34

Never much liked Blue Peter. Elitist.

Wanderwall · 09/01/2018 22:34

I can't believe no one has mentioned Press Gang.

That was the best.

nexttonormal · 09/01/2018 22:36

Bodger and Badger is the best by a mile!

TuckFrump · 09/01/2018 22:37

Blue Peter - wtf! That was only for kids who weren't allowed to watch Grange Hill.

The Flumps
Mr Ben
Jackanory
Dangermouse

NancyDonahue · 09/01/2018 22:43

nexttonormal I sing the Bodger & Badger song every time I make mashed potato. My kids just roll their eyes 😊

PanannyPanoo · 09/01/2018 22:45

Tucker was the first cool kid in grange hill. I loved press gang and Children's ward. Blue Peter was just a bit dull. apart from John Noakes. When he was on it it felt like they were trying to assassinate him.

LascellesMoustache · 09/01/2018 22:45

fluffiest how could I forget the Animals of Farthing Wood! Those poor hedgehogs, I am still haunted by that tragedy. We should have known by the theme tune. Starts off all jolly then gets darker as it progresses.

What about the one with a boy who changed into a dog? Was it called Woof? I loved the theme tune of that one too. Very jaunty.

LascellesMoustache · 09/01/2018 22:46

Oh and... Ghost Writer!

SabineUndine · 09/01/2018 22:46

Who cares? I mean, really.

Mountainpika · 09/01/2018 22:47

Bagpuss (I have a Bagpuss which my husband bought me when I was in hospital 12 years ago.)

Watched it with my children when they were little.
Some good programmes then. Trumpton etc.. Fingermouse.
Noggin the Nog.

But Bagpuss my favourite.

Didn't have TV in the area I lived in till I was 9 in 1956. Grew up with radio.

Sparklingbrook · 09/01/2018 22:49

Who cares? I mean, really.

Well the thread has 70 replies so quite a few, clearly.

NancyDonahue · 09/01/2018 22:51

Oh I've just remembered Bernard's Watch! Loved it even though I was an adult by then Grin

Kids tv nowadays is shit. Dd sits glued to Victorious, Jessie and the like. It's depressing!

EllaHen · 09/01/2018 22:52

I care. This is a really lovely thread.

The Animals of Farthing Wood was excellent.

And yy to Press Gang and Children's Ward.

DEMum101 · 09/01/2018 22:53

Yes, yes to those who say BP was what parents wanted kids to watch. I had to write an essay at school about my favourite TV programme once. I wrote about Batman and my mum made me rewrite the whole thing about Blue Peter, mainly I think because Batman was on ITV and she didn't want school to know we were allowed to watch anything but BBC.

I think Why Don't You would probably come top of my list. They always had such amazing hobbies - things I would never have been able to do as a kid, like sailing or water skiing.
