AIBU to think Blue Peter is NOT the best kids tv programme of all time?

According to a panel of experts it is.

I always thought it was gentle, sentimental clap trap that your parents wanted you to watch to keep you a child forever.

Personally I think the top title should have gone to Maid Marian and her Merry Men or Thunderbirds.

What's your top tv show?

Could be worse could have been tellytubbies

Sparklingbrook · 09/01/2018 21:16

These were the cool girls at Grange Hill. I was bullied throughout High School, I longed to be one of them.

Zammo?

SparkleFizz · 09/01/2018 21:18

This sort of thing is always heavily dependent on the ages of the panel. Someone born after Tiswas, for example, stopped airing isn’t likely to pick that as one of the top children’s shows.

Blue Peter has a big advantage because it’s one of the longest running TV shows around - on the air since 1958 and still there today - so one that many adults of all ages will remember being around when they were children.

I’d have picked Dungeons and Dragons, Mysterious Cities of Gold, or Knightmare personally.

MrsMoastyToasty We must be a similar vintage.

stitchglitched · 09/01/2018 21:20

I found it boring. I can remember when I was growing up you had newsround at about 5pm followed by either Blue Peter, Grange Hill or Byker Grove (and then neighbours after!) I used to hate Blue Peter days.

DesignedForLife · 09/01/2018 21:23

Maid Marian definitely.

Backingvocals · 09/01/2018 21:23

I loved Blue Peter to the point of obsession. In my defence there wasn’t much competition in the early 70s. Also my Blue Peter presenters included John Noakes who was the best ever.

Under my strict guidance the DCs watch BP now and I have to say it’s brilliant. Sooo much better than it was then.

EllaHen · 09/01/2018 21:23

I never watched Blue Peter - it was shite.

Loved Maid Marian, loved it.

I also loved things like Thundercats, Defenders of the Earth and Dogtanian.

As a parent, I've loved Octonauts, Tracey Beaker and MI High. Oh, and the Sarah Jane Mysteries.

PollyMycroft · 09/01/2018 21:24

Nope. It was Chocky; or possibly The Box of Delights; or the one where the girl saw another through a mirror and could travel through it (Lucy something?). I'll allow Mr Ben for littler ones.

BackforGood · 09/01/2018 21:30

I agree with Sparklefizz - it's going to depend on the age of the person responding, and, with Blue Peter running for so long, it's bound to get lots of votes as it's been a part of everyone's life I should imagine at some point or another.
I'm another who loved Blue Peter back in the days of Peter Purves, Val Singleton, John Noakes (and of course Shep) and then Lesley Judd. I should imagine if I watched it now I wouldn't be nearly so impressed. You have to remember of course that we only had really limited choice growing up - as far as children's programmes go, there was only BBC1 and ITV.
Blue Peter does have to be up there at the top though, but I also loved Crackerjack, Basil Brush,

mercurymaze · 09/01/2018 21:32

Little house on the prairie and brady bunch

ChickenPaws · 09/01/2018 21:34

I always found BP to be a bit twee and worthy.

Maid Marion was absolutely brilliant though.

Early Grange Hills also great.

Round The Twist another favourite.

horseknickers · 09/01/2018 21:36

Jackanory. Hands down. Especially George's Marvellous Medicine read by Rik Mayall.

Maid Marion was pretty awesome though!

hellypad · 09/01/2018 21:38

Press Gang for me, absolutely loved it.

LascellesMoustache · 09/01/2018 21:41

I agree. This is my shortlist...

Five Children and It
Knightmare
Why don't you
Maid Marion and her Merry Men
Round the Twist
The wide awake club with timmy mallet and the word association game
Simon and the Witch

Current ones would be
Do you know
Hey Duggy
Melody

easton · 09/01/2018 21:49

I agree with the PP who said BP was twee and worthy. It was like listening to your parents friends conversations.

Its the type of kids programme that adults think kids should watch.

I did watch it in the late 70s 80s but never really liked it. The most boring part was the summer trips abroad they did .

BathshebaKnickerStickers · 09/01/2018 21:55

Jossy’s Giants..!

TheNoodlesIncident · 09/01/2018 22:00

Didn't someone want to put BP into Room 101? I remember the presenter saying you came home from school, keen to watch some TV - and it was Blue Peter. More school!!

And they banged on about Marie Antoinette a lot.

It was definitely more educational than the majority of the other kids' programmes, which seemed much more fun. (Although they did often have a moral in the story that passed me by. I was rather dim-witted though, I needed the subtlety of a housebrick to hammer a point home.)

Hey Duggee has everything though. (Except Marie Antoinette.)

LynetteScavo · 09/01/2018 22:00

I loved Why Don't You...Way better than Blue Peter.

They once did a recipe on Why Don't You that was just mashed banana, cream and sugar all mixed up. Genius. And delicious. Grin

I never felt good enough for Blue Peter....I never won a Blue Peter badge or had non flammable tinsel to make an advent thingy. Sad

meredintofpandiculation · 09/01/2018 22:02

Noggin the Nog. And Jackanory - apparently I went running into the kitchen and said to my Mum "there's a really strange man on Jackanory" and she straight away said "Kenneth Williams!"

MissEliza · 09/01/2018 22:07

I came on to vote for Grange Hill but then I saw such great suggestions. Swap Shop and Crackerjack! Bloody awesome. Rentaghost was a classic. I used to love the show with Clive Dunn. Granddad? I feel sorry for kids today. With the exceptions of Tracey Beaker and Horrible Histories, kids tv is shit.

FucksakeCuntingFuckingTwats · 09/01/2018 22:08

I absolutely hated it so did my friends, cousins and siblings. Wed turn the channel.

I think biker Grove was my favourite as a kid.

MissEliza · 09/01/2018 22:08

Blue Peter was for goody two shoes. I knew I'd never get on with SIL when she announced she'd won a Blue Peter badge 😀
