We rushed out of the last thread without even a pocket handkerchief: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/a3124599-Trump-2018-Resistance-is-Never-Futile

So here's a new one, with its own

I am the very model of a Very Stable Genius.
I have a mighty button and no problems with my penius.
I have no time for television, golf or social media
Since my brain is way way better than the best encyclopedia.

I'm cutting tax, I'll build a wall, I'll take away their medicare
You can trust me 'cos I'm orange and I have the most amazing hair.
So with my total ignorance of matters heterogeneous
I am the very model of a Very Stable Genius!

Compared to other leaders, my behavior's quite unusual
My twisted tweets and pissed-on sheets have managed to amuse you all
I have to drink two-handed 'cause my fingers are the teeniest
I need a sippy-cup with the inscription "Stable Genius."

Hannah Arendt's examination of the regimes of Hitler and Stalin describes how constant, blatant lying breaks the population to accept the will of the leader.

www.openculture.com/2017/01/hannah-arendt-explains-how-propaganda-uses-lies-to-erode-all-truth-morality.html

In an ever-changing, incomprehensible world the masses had reached the point where they would, at the same time, believe everything and nothing, think that everything was possible and nothing was true... The totalitarian mass leaders based their propaganda on the correct psychological assumption that, under such conditions, one could make people believe the most fantastic statements one day, and trust that if the next day they were given irrefutable proof of their falsehood, they would take refuge in cynicism; instead of deserting the leaders who had lied to them, they would protest that they had known all along that the statement was a lie and would admire the leaders for their superior tactical cleverness.

From the same article:
[Arendt said] "The result of a consistent and total substitution of lies for factual truth is not that the lie will now be accepted as truth and truth be defamed as a lie, but that the sense by which we take our bearings in the real world—and the category of truth versus falsehood is among the mental means to this end---is being destroyed."

Josh Jones, writer of the article, adds:
The epistemological ground thus pulled out from under them, most would depend on whatever the leader said, no matter its relation to truth.

Well KJU has been provided with his golden road/bridge. (Reunification of some sort - which is what they've (officially) always been after.) 45 though??

Hard to counter Norway’s checklist. If Trump really wants to MAGA, he should be taking tips from Norway.

Where is Jared in all of this, by the way?

lionheart · 14/01/2018 18:06

'Trump ... is all id and pure appetite, unspooling raw, insatiable, childish hunger every night on Twitter. He’s the most unregulated, unself-governed president this country has ever had, an example of what happens to the psyche of rich white people after four decades of economic deregulation. But white folks—at least powerful ones—get to decide the exception to the rule. (“Some of the virtues of a freeman would be the vices of slaves,” as one 1837 defense of slavery explained.) And that’s what makes Trump the whitest of white presidents: He can openly tweet-mock moral conventions that hold that only those who demonstrate self-sovereignty are worthy of political sovereignty and still be the sovereign.'

He has gone very quiet hasn't he. I guess he's busy bringing peace to the middle East Hmm

cozietoesie · 14/01/2018 18:09

Of course. Forgive me. Grin

There are three porn stars now. It's like the start of a joke. (I can still remember some of those inspired by Bill Clinton).

AcrossthePond55 · 14/01/2018 18:18

Where is Jared

Down in the basement rumpus room hiding behind the sofa, sucking his thumb thinking "They'll never look for me here!".

I think he's wrong.

AcrossthePond55 · 14/01/2018 18:32

IMO the porn stars will present a bit of a conundrum to the Dems. After all, whilst most of them condemned the Lewinsky 'affair', they also asserted that Bill Clinton's infidelity had nothing to do with his ability to be a good president. They may have 'tsk-tsked' but they pretty much all insisted it was a 'private matter between Bill and Hillary' and in and of itself was not an impeachable offense. It was lying about it to Congress that he was charged with.

So, the Dems will have a hard time screaming 'adulterer' at Scrotus without getting some blow-back. They'll have to push the issue of bribing these women to keep quiet and even then I have a feeling it will be an impeachment 'non-starter' as in and of itself that's not illegal unless the women were threatened.

The most they'll get out of this is that it's just another example of Scrotus' lies and deception and that he's a philanderer. If they think it will damage his appeal to his 'fan base', I think they're wrong. Just as most of B Clinton's supporters compartmentalized Bill's cheating, Scrotus's supporters will do the same for him. I think they'd do much better ignore this 'red herring' and to keep digging at Trump/Russia.

And if they think this is an embarrassment to Scrotus personally, they're wrong there, too. He doesn't give a rat's ass about being seen as someone who is unfaithful to his wife. The only person who will truly be embarrassed by this is Melania.

I am currently reading ‘If only they didn’t speak English- Notes from Trump’’s America’ by Jon Sopel.
It’s a really good read and very measured- it talks about the many positive aspects of the US as well as the negatives but the chapter on Race really did shock me.
I knew a bit about US history but didn’t realise just how deeply ingrained racism is. I don’t have the time/energy to cut and paste the whole chapter but I really recommend it.
I have lived in London most of my adult life and, for all its faults, I do think it’s probably one of the most tolerant places on Earth- in fact, Londoners don’t just ‘tolerate’ people from different races and cultures, they genuinely welcome them.
My children are genuinely baffled by racism - they just don’t understand it because they have grown up with people of every race/culture/ethnicity/faith imaginable.
I remember DS1 asking me why there were no brown people when we went to visit my parents because, to him, it was strange being somewhere where everybody was white.
I’m rambling I know but racism depresses me so much. I know it’s a human trait to divide people into us/them or in/out groups but to do it on something as superficial as skin colour really doesn’t paint anyone in a good light.

The "I don't recall" defence. Otherwise known, following Sessions, as an attack of the 'vapors'.

I am absolutely loving the hotel reviews. I think I may actually join Twitter to add a review. This is what the internet was made for. He must be absolutely incandescent but there is nothing he can do about it.
Power to the people!

I really do feel for the majority of Americans that didn’t vote for this monster- thinking of you Across

cozietoesie · 14/01/2018 19:52

I have a feeling - just a feeling at the moment - that he's going to move away from the GOP and become more of an 'Independent'. Watch out. Wink

AcrossthePond55 · 14/01/2018 20:32

Thanks Hoolie!

As far as US racism, it's upsetting to the majority of us that so many people think we're a country full of entrenched racists. We're not. The vast majority of us want nothing more than to live in peace with all our neighbours, no matter what race, creed, or colour they are. The vast majority of us embrace other cultures and enjoy what they bring to our national table.

Every country has racists. Every country has treated 'others' unfairly. If someone thinks their country (wherever it is) doesn't, I suggest they remove those rose-coloured spectacles and take a good long look around.

We (the majority of Americans) have looked it square in the face and see it for the ugliness that it is. And the majority of us do what we can to live our lives treating others as we wish to be treated.

Roussette · 14/01/2018 21:11

Hoolie I shall look out for that book, I like Jon Sopel, thanks
