He thinks IAVU! He's got a maths exam tomorrow, he's supposed to be doing a bit of revision after dinner and he'll be going to bed at 9.30. He just asked for a can of Coke and I said no. AIBU?

I don’t let any of my kids drink the stuff, so no, YANBU!

meredintofpandiculation · 08/01/2018 20:19

Why are you saying no? Because you don't like him drinking coke, or because it's the evening?

jelliebelly · 08/01/2018 20:20

YANBU the caffeine and sugar will stop him sleeping

Sparklingbrook · 08/01/2018 20:20

You have Coke in the house. Who is it for?

Is it because you think he won't sleep, or because of his teeth?

Greensleeves · 08/01/2018 20:21

I don't think caffeinated drinks are a great idea for kids (even big ones) close to bedtime no. I have offered alternative nice drinks just not ones with caffeine in them!

I would have let him have a can of coke earlier on maybe before his revision but not after or too close to bedtime. Maybe tell him he can have a coke and a treat tomorrow after his exam instead? Maybe a chocolate before bed tonight.

AnnaT45 · 08/01/2018 20:21

If I had one now I wouldn't sleep till about 3am!

PasstheStarmix · 08/01/2018 20:21

hot chocolate

It's for me Sparklingbrook, left over from Christmas (I like it as a mixer!)

If he asked on Saturday morning while he was playing on his Xbox I probably would let him have one.

None of my dc have coke, younger ones no fizzy pop unless special occasions. And ds 13+16 likely have what they chose when out without me!!

Sparklingbrook · 08/01/2018 20:23

Penggwn. What?

Sparklingbrook · 08/01/2018 20:24

Ah right Greensleeves. I have a couple of cans stashed at the back of the pantry out of sight of the teenagers for that very reason. Grin

I don't let my 12 or 15 year old have it. A treat is a lemonade. I'm sure they've tried it with friends but I would never buy it.

Sparklingbrook · 08/01/2018 20:28

Pengggwn you quoted my name then said something about Crack? I don't know what you mean. Confused

ShatnersBassoon · 08/01/2018 20:28

I wouldn't cause a fuss over it, if he believes it's going to aid his last-minute revision. It's unlikely to disrupt an older boy's sleep. Presumably he brushes his teeth effectively.

TeenTimesTwo · 08/01/2018 20:29

I'm not a fan of it late in the day for young children.

However I did use coke before one of DD's GCSE exams when she woke up shattered and brain not working. Seemed to work - she passed it.
(I wished I'd thought of it before some of the other exams).

PasstheStarmix · 08/01/2018 20:30

I think the more you make something forbidden he'll just want it all the more and drink it with his friends when you're not there. Just tell him he can have one tomorrow after his exam as a treat.

My 18 year old is currently into Elderflower Cordial and sparkling water. He's gone posh on us. Grin

Greensleeves · 08/01/2018 20:33

It's not really forbidden now they're teenagers (it was when they were little) but I don't want him drinking it shortly before bedtime the night before an exam, I'd rather he had something else. He thinks that's ridiculous! He's a lovely boy though so he's not sulking just a quick eyeroll

Oh sorry Penggwn but it doesn't look like the OP minded me asking. Thanks anyway though.

MyDcAreMarvel · 08/01/2018 20:33

Yanbu my 13 year old isn't allowed Coke at anytime of day.

LordSugarWillSeeYouNow · 08/01/2018 20:33

I only buy Diet Coke for ds almost 15! Sue me
