He thinks IAVU! He's got a maths exam tomorrow, he's supposed to be doing a bit of revision after dinner and he'll be going to bed at 9.30. He just asked for a can of Coke and I said no. AIBU?

I wouldn't. I don't like the effects when I do it myself either! Which is all the time... Blush

VileyRose · 08/01/2018 21:08

My 13 yr old is not allowed cola either. So no YANBU

MammaTJ · 08/01/2018 21:09

DD cannot have coke, as she is climbing the walls without it! DS cannot have any as he was until a few months ago a bedwetter.

DD and DS are both given coke and other forbidden drinks when they are taken on holiday to their Grandparents my DP, their Dad. He sticks to the rules rigidly here, but when faced with hos DM, who gives in to the DC, he rolls over like a puppy! Still I don't go with them, so do not have to deal with the aftermath!

You, OP, are not being unreasonable.

This is one of those threads that make me think I must live on another planet to most people on here. It's a can of pop. He's 13. Most of the kids around here go to school clutching cans of monster and red bull. I must live in a right rough area 😂

ThinkingQueSeraSera · 08/01/2018 21:15

Not sure I would let kids have fizzy drinks full stop let alone caffeinated

NorbertTheDragon · 08/01/2018 21:18

I once drank a litre of coke the night before an exam. I was awake all night and then falling asleep in the exam. I got a D (though that was probably to do,with lack of revision as well!) Grin

So I don't let my kids drink coke of an evening. Not that I buy fizzy drinks, they tend to only have them if we're out, the poor deprived darlings.

Sparklingbrook · 08/01/2018 21:18

I think most DC these days have the odd fizzy drink.

At 13 they can go with their own money to the shop and buy it for themselves and drink it before they get home even. Grin

I really hate Monster and that sort of stuff, but I can't guarantee my two aren't drinking it when they are out. I believe plans are afoot to regulate it's sale to Over 16s soon.

ThymeLord · 08/01/2018 21:20

Mine tries to drink it at every opportunity. She has to settle for rola cola instead.

Emabrmsca · 08/01/2018 21:21

LOL! It's coke fgs! 😂 give the poor lad a can of coke

Aquamarine1029 · 08/01/2018 21:30

You'll be doing him a huge favor to ban any and all soda except for very rare occurrences. Soda is pure garbage.

JustDanceAddict · 08/01/2018 21:30

NO. Sometimes my 15 yr old has coffee when she’s got a lot of h/w on, but I wouldn’t give it to my 13 yr old. Coke is a different beast entirely.

Sparklingbrook · 08/01/2018 21:31

Easy to do in the home Aquamarine1029 not so much when they are out on their own.

noenergy · 08/01/2018 21:32

LOL at putting the stash in the boot, I do the same but my kids r all younger. I don't drink it in front of them. I drink it after they go to bed and it doesn't affect my sleep whatsoever.

I would let him have it and make sure he brushes his teeth. Those who restrict it even in small quantities, I think banning something makes it more attractive to them.

Sparklingbrook · 08/01/2018 21:33

When the DC were toddlers I would drink any soft drinks from a mug, that way they showed no interest in them.

Stoptherideiwannagetoff · 08/01/2018 22:55

I try not to let my d's, 14. Had a cheeky glass myself at 11 last night and was still awake at 4am Confused

mywayalltheway · 09/01/2018 08:26

I would also say no, we do let our DC have coke occasionally but mostly if we are out in a pub/restaurant but not very often at home, even though we have it in for me.
