To be appalled at neighbours joke

So while leaving I bumped into my neighbour to the right of us while leaving to get some shopping. I was with my teenage DD at the time and he told us that he had sold his house and would be moving sometime in the next two months. He then added he is moving to be closer to family in Sussex, however I asked how quickly it took to sell the house and it he said it went after only a week and he sold it to a muslim family then he proceeded to say just kidding its a white family. [shocked]. I said his joke was distasteful and I couldn't care what religion my neighbours are and he was wrong to presume I would dislike muslim neighbours. We got in the car in a state of shock. Although this area is majority white its still a very diverse part of South London. I never thought he would be racist he puts a Labour board up each election and he's university educated. Maybe as a white women I am oblivious to peoples prejudices. Nevertheless this comes as a huge shock.

I don't think that's true in China, Wherethevioletsgrow, or in a lot of the Far East. There haven't been that many white people there historically at all, apart from missionaries, as far as I know. It is true in India, of course, disgracefully so.

Lizzie and zzzzz you might want to brush up on your colonial history. Not the whole country no, but parts of it, yes. E.g. Shanghai, Hong Kong. The Chinese people experienced oppression from whites.

Lizzie48 · 07/01/2018 20:16

Sorry, yes obviously Hong Kong, silly me. I confess I didn't know about Shanghai. The British did occupy Singapore of course as well.

Llangollen · 07/01/2018 20:16

White people have never been persecuted or oppressed because of their race.

You haven't been everywhere, have you?

You should also read the White Gold

Lizzie48 · 07/01/2018 20:17

It was a horrible period of oppression in India, though, zzzzz.

He sounds like a twat.

wherethevioletsgrow · 07/01/2018 20:19

And the Germans occupied Quingdao. And the Portugese occupied Macao. The British, Belgian, French and Japanese also occupied various other concessions in the country and often treated the Chinese appallingly. There is a huge colonial history there.

Lizzie48 · 07/01/2018 20:24

The Japanese are not white, sorry for pointing out the obvious. There is a lot of history between the Chinese and Japanese.

wherethevioletsgrow · 07/01/2018 20:25

No, but if you tell me about a place where white people have settled (not as colonial overlords) and were oppressed by the indigenous population, I am keen to hear it. I don't mean where they are targets of revolutionary violence in modern times (e.g. white farmers in Zimbabwe) because the reason whites originally settled there was to rule and oppress.

wherethevioletsgrow · 07/01/2018 20:30

Um yeah, cheers for pointing that out... I meant that China was heavily colonised, something that you and others said did not happen. And I think you would agree that the Brits, Belgians, Germans and French are white.

Yes, there is much more anti-Japanese sentiment in China than there is anti-white. Which can be partly attributed to the history of domination by the Japanese.

Lizzie48 · 07/01/2018 20:33

You're right, wherethevioletsgrow. That is what white people have done historically, sadly. We are to blame for a lot of the violence taking place in African countries.

Lizzie48 · 07/01/2018 20:39

Sorry for being a little facetious there. I knew about the Japanese occupations, I wasn't thinking of them as we were talking about white oppression. I forgot about Hong Kong, though, as I've already admitted.

wherethevioletsgrow · 07/01/2018 20:44

Oh no problem at all lizzie and sorry for being snappy.

He's a racist idiot but not sure it would get my knickers in such a twist I felt the need to share my horror online

user1497863568 · 07/01/2018 21:19

Some people are Muslim and white. Shock and horror! I know who I would much rather have as neighbours - nice quiet middle class Muslim neighbours over rough as rocks white neighbours anyday. That said, of course it could be the other way too ...

Islam’s not a race so he wasn’t being racist. He was displaying religious prejudice.

wherethevioletsgrow · 07/01/2018 21:40

zzzzz I wasn't implying anything but you are being very disingenuous if you pretend that the Chinese weren't suppressed by the white. And any white people who settled in China were part of the elite and ruling class and were not suppressed by the Chinese even if the Chinese were not over the moon at them being there.

The point I was making was that white people (as a race) have never experienced widespread oppression in the way that other races have. Where racial tensions have arisen, this has been in countries where whites have at some point invaded and settled there. That's not the same as the way that other races have been treated by the white race throughout history.

How were the Christmas nose suppressed by the British in China? shock. They were barely tolerated. They despised the Red Devil’s. Perhaps you are thinking of somewhere else. I think most Chinese people would be aghast at being told they were colonised by the British

Ummmmm.... idk where to start with that really.... You don't think there was any suppression of the Chinese by the British/West at all? Okay then.

Anyway, you can go on arguing that racism against whites is the same as racism against other races until you are blue in the face. I'm out.
