To be appalled at neighbours joke

So while leaving I bumped into my neighbour to the right of us while leaving to get some shopping. I was with my teenage DD at the time and he told us that he had sold his house and would be moving sometime in the next two months. He then added he is moving to be closer to family in Sussex, however I asked how quickly it took to sell the house and it he said it went after only a week and he sold it to a muslim family then he proceeded to say just kidding its a white family. [shocked]. I said his joke was distasteful and I couldn't care what religion my neighbours are and he was wrong to presume I would dislike muslim neighbours. We got in the car in a state of shock. Although this area is majority white its still a very diverse part of South London. I never thought he would be racist he puts a Labour board up each election and he's university educated. Maybe as a white women I am oblivious to peoples prejudices. Nevertheless this comes as a huge shock.

Hmm did you really...

Your OP sounds like you are fishing for as many "likes" as possible on this forum, shame they don't exist here.

TwitterQueen1 · 07/01/2018 18:12

Well Jesus I don't feel I'm missing the point at all. The neighbour's so-called 'joke' was certainly racist but I have said upthread that IMHO he said this to deliberately cause shock and upset to the OP because he perceives that she would be upset at having Muslim neighbours. At no point has the neighbour actually stated his views. The OP is naive, ignorant and white - so totally blameless of anything, obviously. Hmm

Knittedfairies · 07/01/2018 18:14

Cabbage I think Twitter makes a valid point - everybody should be aware that rascism is everywhere, every day. If OP had said she was shocked that her university-educated neighbour had made a very unfunny and rascist joke that would have been a different matter.

TwitterQueen1 · 07/01/2018 18:15

My point is that ignorance is no excuse for racism.

There are hundreds of thousands of racist Labour supporters in some wards, especially around the west midlands.

You do not get 500 years of racism out of the western world in just a couple of generations. Its been a long battle and it still has some distance to go.

MistyMeena · 07/01/2018 18:17

We (youngish white couple) went to view a lovely house about 20 years ago and the vendors showed us round. About half way through they said they were so pleased we'd viewed as they wouldn't want to sell the house to the black person who'd viewed yesterday. Shock

We left fairly quickly and didn't buy! Shocked although not that surprised to think this kind of attitude still rears it's ugly head.

Coyoacan · 07/01/2018 18:17

I can understand your shock, OP. Beng a realist I wouldn't necessarily be shock by that comment coming from some random, like the poster who thought it was a funny joke and you should have laughed, but not from someone that I thought I knew to a certain extent.

LloydColeandtheCoconuts · 07/01/2018 18:18

OP, he sounds like a moron but he’s moving soon.

I love how you’ve pointed out he lives on the right of you.

Flyingflipflop · 07/01/2018 18:19

I never understand these types of threads. Wouldn’t most people just get in their car (unshocked) mutter 'Racist twat' to themselves and carry on?

More of the OP is given over to halo polishing rather than the incident Grin

BulletFox · 07/01/2018 18:20

Anyway, he's off soon.

You made your displeasure known.

Maybe his sense of humour is 'parodying' and comes across wrongly or maybe he's a twat, who knows.

You won't have to see him again soon.

SoupDragon · 07/01/2018 18:22

everybody should be aware that rascism is everywhere, every day

That doesn’t mean they should assume everyone is racist.

I would be shocked if someone I had previously assumed to be not racist came out with a “joke” like that.

Pluckedpencil · 07/01/2018 18:23

It's good you were shocked. We should all be shocked because it is truly fucking disgusting that people STILL think its ok to say this bile out loud.

buttercup54321 · 07/01/2018 18:23

How will jesswinson cope if her new neighbours are racist. Towards HER.

BuzzKillington · 07/01/2018 18:23

So, in reply to his 'joke', your reply was a succinct and on the spot, 'your joke was distasteful and I couldn't care what religion my neighbours are and you were wrong to presume I would dislike muslim neighbours'.

Hmm

I find it ironic you are complaining about racist prejudice when you are clearly so prejudiced yourself. His views are disgusting and you are almost as bad

killforcarrots · 07/01/2018 18:36

Considering the way Labour treats Jews, why are you surprised? Labour is a thoroughly racist party.

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 07/01/2018 18:38

Not pleasant, but hardly enough to send you into "a state of shock"...

isadoradancing123 · 07/01/2018 18:54

Wow! A state of shock, you are very easily shocked then

crunched · 07/01/2018 18:58

especially given his Labour affiliations.
