I’ve sprained my ankle badly.

It’s just me and my iPad, the family are having a great time.

I remember Boffinmum! I read that in the summer.

I particularly remember the platter of cold meats.

Early miscarriage on a camping holiday in France. Sharing tent with 3 people. One bathroom for wholecampsite. As if just one of those alone isn’t bad enough!!!

AlpacaLypse · 06/01/2018 01:06

@TatianaLarina hope your ankle feels better soon and you manage to enjoy yourself xx, meanwhile yy we've had some corkers this year, but BoffinMum and Patsy was possibly one of the best. A trawl in MN Classics may be a splendid way to cheer yourself up?

TatianaLarina · 06/01/2018 01:09

Oh crispmonster that’s dreadful Flowers Flowers

Had a very nice holiday in Paris and Cannes in the summer. Although it was a heatwave when we got to a Cannes and it was very hot, it was still lovely. Last day we had a lovely lunch in a cafe, DH had mussels, thought nothing of it at the time. Until the next morning, of course the morning when we were going home and he was vomiting into a bin in Cannes train station. He continues to have fluid coming out of both ends for some hours.

Get to the airport security, remember the week when the papers had the stories about the queues being hours long - of course that was the same week! I stood in the queue for almost two hours, DH had to rush off at last minute to the toilet again, had to go to end of queue and nearly miss flight.

When we got back to the UK we had a delightful drive back from Manchester to the north of Scotland with some very urgent stops. That was 7 hours I will never get back! Confused

As a child being responsible for a whole group of drunken adults whilst abroad. I was the teenager - I'm supposed to be the one vomiting in the bathroom.

TatianaLarina · 06/01/2018 01:12

Oh I don’t need sympathy, it could be worse, thanks all the same. Bear

I thought it might be broken when I first did it because I heard a loud crack - but I think that was just my ankle joint.

On the way to family holiday last year, my dad was driving, the car broke down just as we were trying to cross the motorway.
The result, two hours of angry people as our car and caravan blocked a busy, dangerous crossing. And us trying to keep hold of two toddlers on the side of the motorway while we waited for green flag.

aishana · 06/01/2018 01:27

Majorca 2008.

Beautiful place.

Shame about the gastroenteritis that lasted for ten days!!

Tartyflette · 06/01/2018 01:49

Driving through the Alps with DH and DS 18 mths heading for a week's skiing holiday. Stopped off at a sparkling clean Swiss motorway services and ate a nice veal sausage for lunch.
Spent the next three days unable to leave the tiny hotel room they had jammed the three of us into. Indeed I could barely leave the tiny bog.
DH was fine, all he wanted to do was ski; all I wanted to do was moan faintly. And be left alone to die.
The thought of a veal sausage still gives me the horrors over 25 years later.

gluteustothemaximus · 06/01/2018 01:50

I have a list.

Fell down stairs and broke foot day before holiday. I was just sat on couch for the week on codeine.

Caught the flu on plane on way to Spain as a teen. Ill for most of the 2 weeks.

Another holiday to Spain, came down with the worst case of tonsillitis ever, to the point I stopped breathing...only to be rushed to hospital straight off the plane with quinseys infection in my throat. Spent a week in hospital.

Most recently, went on holiday on the Isle of Wight. Followed sat Nav to this ‘luxury’ resort, and we ended up doing a Botswana special top gear style, DH had to drive through these humongous puddles. It was terrifying in the dark. The car was pretty much written off. I was also 8 months pregnant. But we did go hell for leather with the holiday company, and did get a free holiday...which was actually nice, and free from drama.

Hope your ankle gets better soon!

Mosquito infested apartment
I counted 50 bites just on the back of one one upper arm- the first night

FeralBeryl · 06/01/2018 02:19

Oh bless you Thanks
One that springs to mind was Ibiza several years ago. A gang of us went (all with young children) been a very bad year, we couldn't really afford it but after committing to going we scrimped and saved hard.
2nd day-awoke to DC1 vomiting. In my ear lying next to me.
Surprisingly, I immediately contracted the same bug.
It was a fast moving bug, within hours-5 of us were crawling to the bathroom, shitting ourselves, vomiting into swing bin liners.
This lasted 4 days. I wouldn't let the kids go down to spread the lurgy so they sat in a paddling pool on the hotel room balcony looking longingly at the fun below Grin
Most of our 'spends' went on tipping our wonderful maid every morning who silently took our sicky sheets each day and gave me plenty of extras. She also brought lots of bottled water.

The week was topped off by my friend sulking massively as she'd 'hardly seen me' and 'you'll be going home all skinny and I've put loads of weight on because the food was so nice'
Well cry me a fucking river!

Our honeymoon. Total disaster from start to finish thanks to an incompetent holiday company. Too much went wrong for me to go into here, but we ended up taking them to the small claims court & winning enough for another honeymoon. Despite the stress, DH & I are still married Grin

If you have a Kindle, download The Tent, The Bucket and Me by Emma Kennedy. Hilarious book about holiday disasters.

DH and I booked a week in Portugal and It started on the plane where I thought I was having a heart attack I was in so much pain. Paramedics were at the airport when I arrived and was whisked to hospital in an ambulance. I was diagnosed with a very inflamed gall bladder and pancreitis and as a result I spent 10 days in a Portuguese hospital nil by mouth, not even water! Poor DH had to travel an hour each way to visit me each day. Luckily the apartment we booked was free after the original 7 days and they gave us the additional 4 days we needed at no extra cost. So having spent 10 days in hospital I finally got 1 day in the sun!

Every holiday is a nightmare for us,

We saved for our first trip to Disney, we got to Orlando and DD was sick, kind of wrote it off as sickness from the flight, she just didn't get better though. Drs when we were there said heat stroke- not true at all, she had scarlet fever.

Went to Disneyland Paris, she came down a bit unwell, I thought we will take it easy and got some antibiotics- they didn't do much, seems she now has Glandular Fever.

HappenedForAReisling · 06/01/2018 06:26

14.5 hour flight being delayed leaving and even later arriving meaning we missed our connecting flight, With that length of flight plus a 12 hour time change we were exhausted. We were so relieved to get on the next flight after taking it in turns to nap for the 5 hours we were waiting for the next flight.
Relief turned to terror - especially for me who's terrified of flying - when we aborted our landing due to our flaps being frozen. We had a terrifying half hour while the pilots decided whether to attempt to land without flaps or return to our airport of origin.
They decided to land hence us being told exactly how to prepare and -
after the airspace around us being cleared - touching down to an accompaniment of emergency vehicles.

AlChris · 06/01/2018 08:20

Long haul holiday to the frozen American Mid West in the depths of winter. His involved four flights.

Flight no 1 - emergency landing due tomorrow hydraulic failure
Flight no 2 - airport closed due to snow.
Flight no 3 - 8 hour delay
Flight no 4 - normal flight!

shakalaka · 06/01/2018 09:40

2 stick out for me, 12 hours in a Canadian airport after our original flight was cancelled - its ok we got $10 each for food to last us the duration!! Kids were 18months and just 4.

Second time last summer last day of the trip I come down with a horrendous stomach bug. Spend the night in the bathroom. Next day we need to be out of our holiday cottage by 10, and our flight wasn't until 8pm that night. I spent a horrendous day walking around a theme park drinking fanta to give me energy. Alternating between needing to sit and then that hurting so having to walk around. Kids enjoyed it though!!

Noofly · 06/01/2018 09:49

Not a disaster, but a rotten end to a holiday. We went to Russia last Easter and our flight going home was cancelled. You really don’t want your flight cancelled when in Russia due to the visa hassle!

We ended up being put on a flight 11 hours earlier which meant getting the DC up at 2:00AM instead of having a relaxed half day in St Petersburg, plus having to try to contact our apartment host at 11:00PM on a Friday night to let her know and ask her to change the taxi for us. Plus a 7 hour layover in CDG, my least favourite airport in the world.

On the plus side, the EU compensation that we eventually got from KLM pretty much paid for the flights. Grin

iamkahleesi · 06/01/2018 09:49

Car-jacked at gunpoint in Miami. Took everything including passports. That was fun.

AccidentallyRunToWindsor · 06/01/2018 10:00

The camping holiday where is rained as we were putting our tent up, we diddnt dry out the whole time we were away. There was a thunderstorm on the 2nd night that saw us sheltering in the toilet block and it was at this point my face started to balloon from a wisdom tooth infection. We went back to the tent to discover it had leaked and our bedding was soaked, made the decision to drive home and my car broke down. Breakdown people took 4 hours to get to us and to tow us to a garage- we got home 10 hours later.

Germany 2016. DH and I booked a 1 bed apartment through air b&b. Pretty countryside about 9 miles from the city centre.

Owners of apartment offered to pick us up from train station, which was nice of them. When we got to our destination, four of their neighbors were lined up outside front door to greet us like a welcoming committee. I should point out that I was off sick with anxiety and depression at the time. We'd gone away to relax and spend some quiet time together.

We then discovered that our "apartment" was actually a room with a kitchenette inside the owners property. The bathroom was separate and off the main hallway of their (very busy) house. We hadn't been in room ten minutes before the owners started knocking on door repeatedly to speak to us (three times in an hour) They then invited us to their living room for drinks and when we got there the neighbours were there too. We ended up trapped for about three hours. My DH told me that at one point the male host showed him something on his laptop and there were porn sites open on the browserShock I was mildly hysterical by the time we escaped back to room. I'm usually a friendly person, but I was very unwell with anxiety at the time. They could all barely speak English (and my German is appalling) so communication was very limited.

There was then a knock on the door at 7am the next morning inviting us to breakfast. They wouldn't take no for an answer. The next night we were again asked to join them for drinks. Again, declining was not an option.
They also seemed to be constantly hanging around in hallway, making any holiday nookie impossibly awkward.

I booked us a hotel in the city centre as soon as they let us go back to our room. We stole away the next morning. We didn't dare tell them because we were frankly terrified of their reaction!

Idontevencareanymore · 06/01/2018 10:13

iamkahleesi, goodness that must have been terrifying!

The worst I've had so not disastrous was burning the soles of my feet in the Algarve. Painful and not recommended.

This felt disastrous but was a UK trip, left every single item of child's clothing u packed and 400 miles away on my bed.
Had to find shops to buy clothing and as he was a toddler it got expensive.
