A family of five, with two teens
We have sky super fast broadband, sky sports, Netflix, Amazon Prime, and 4 smartphones.

Are we, more or less, normal?

I pay £80 for my phone a month, that includes an iPad which I added onto my contract.

£7 a month for netflix

£7 a month for Amazon music

£37 for broadband

Plus an extra £79 annually for Amazon Prime.

I do not pay for my teen's phone contracts and we have no TV packaged as I use my fire stick.

Oh my days some people spend a lot on tv!

We pay £19 pm for phone line, unltd broadband. £55 for 3 x phones.

No Netflix, prime or sky. Think it's a complete waste of money.

Sallystyle · 05/01/2018 18:20

I'm not sure why I pay so much for my phone really. Even without the iPad it is expensive. I guess it's because when I renew it I usually go for one of the newest phones out?

I'd love to know what phones and what minute/texts you get if you pay under £50 a month.

I'd love to know what phones and what minute/texts you get if you pay under £50 a month.

I use and old (3 years) phone and don't get tied into contracts. I really don't need the most recent model. I am in £10/months with giffgaff which gives you
3 GB download limit
500 mins
unlimited texts.
Giffgaff to giffgaff calls are not taken down from the 500 minute allowance and with DH and lots of friends on giffgaff, this is plenty for me.

What on earth do you get for £50??

hungryhippo90 · 05/01/2018 18:39

£166 and some pence in our household.
Sky, Netflix, 3 mobiles- 2 contracts one is £10payg plus internet.

MongerTruffle · 05/01/2018 18:40

We are a family of four.
£125 for Virgin TV, broadband and landline
£140 in total for mine and DH's phones
£50 in total for teenage sons' phones
Just short of £10 for Netflix
= £325 Shock
We do prioritise tech over other luxuries that people might have. We probably spend much, much less on meals out, hobbies, holidays etc than most people.

We are a family of 3 and have three mobile phones. One is on giffgaff, the other two are on 02 but I am thinking about moving us all to giffgaff - £7.50 a month for a really decent package. The 02 subscriptions are about £25 a month for DH and me. All the phones were bought sim-free.

We have Virgin Media (including landline phone and broadband) and Sky sports - that is usually over £90 a month for everything. And Amazon Prime, so I'd say we're spending around £130 a month. And we have a Times subscription. When you start to list it out, it's a lot of money. We could definitely save money. I would like to change the Times subscription and just have the weekend papers, but you can't do that - it's either Mon to Sat or Sunday, not just Sat/Sun. I don't know why. I might move to the Sunday one and just buy the Saturday one when we feel like it too.

I don't think about the depreciation on the phones because they were all bought as presents - well DH's and DS's were.

I currently have a Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge + 32GB which was on contract, but expired. I now pay £7.50 pcm with Giffgaff, for unlimited texts, 250 minutes and and 1GB data. If my phone broke, I'd either go second hand from FB/eBay, or buy a lower spec phone outright.

I have an iPhone 6 which was about 600 quid two and a half years ago. Depreciating over 36 months life expectancy (and I may well keep it for longer) gives me a monthly cost of 17 quid, plus 11 quid a month for 6 gig of data plus unlimited calls and texts which is enough unless you want to watch videos on the move.

Emmasmum2013 · 07/01/2018 16:18

Costs like that are why we cancelled Sky.

Have a shop around for a different broadband provider that is cheaper for the same speeds.
I can’t remember the last time I watched something on normal TV. We just stream everything, really don’t see the need for conventional TV these days.

Allthewaves · 07/01/2018 16:28

Monthly
£55 virgin and broadband (everything except sports)
£7 amazon prime
£15 + £70 two mobiles

£147 for two adults essentially as kids are small. Dh got new phone for xmas wih large data package and insurance.

SunnyCoco · 07/01/2018 17:17

@U2HasTheEdge

I’ve got an iPhone 6S and get 8GB data, unlimited texts and unlimited minutes for £12 per month
