A family of five, with two teens
We have sky super fast broadband, sky sports, Netflix, Amazon Prime, and 4 smartphones.

Are we, more or less, normal?

Shock We pay £28 for broadband and landline (couldn't get superfast even if we wanted it but it's unlimited) My mobile is payg and I put £10 on every 6-8 wks Kids two mobiles payg. Tbf one hardly uses it, the other we put £10 every 4-6 wks. None have data. Dh has an iphone and a £13 a mth tesco sim card with 3gb data, 5000 texts and 1500 mins with 6mths half price @ £6.50 Netflix £7.50 a mth Amazon Prime I have student discount so £49 year or whatever it is Ditched Sky and we don't miss it.

So £60-70 a mth roughly.

We’ve just switched broadband and phone line to plusnet for £19.99 per month plus £50 cash back. Was previously paying £20 to talk talk.

My phone is paid by work, but before that I had second hand phone and £10 payg. DH pays £30 a month but that will reduce when he switches phones.

£8 Netflix. I’m tempted by now tv except when I signed up for a trial to watch westworld, they weren’t showing it any more!

Amazon prime and Netflix seem to have similar programmes, and years ago we had BT tv for the kids and that was similar - so seems little point paying for more than one tv service.

It pays to shop around/ threaten to cancel, but also to only pay for what you need/use!

mrsm43s · 05/01/2018 11:46

Family of 4, 2 adults, 2 teens.

£25 Fibre broadband including phone line and free weekend calls (EE)
£40 for 4 contract mobiles (£7.50 each for kids, £12.50 each for adults, SIM only or v.basic phone included - Tesco)
£7.99 Netflix
Occasionally NowTV, we have the box, so just buy vouchers on ebay - no more than a couple of quid a month (Ent only).

So about £75 a month or so? But we don't have (or want or need) fancy iPhones/Sky tv, Sports packages etc.

Thesmallthings · 05/01/2018 11:48

I pay 86 a month. 1 phone contract and a 1 SIM contract Amazon prime and Netflix.

We have fire stick with kodie on to so need for sky tv. We only habe Amazon and Netflix for the kids really as it's easier.

Thesmallthings · 05/01/2018 11:49

On and 15 for internet and phone

Babababababybel23 · 05/01/2018 11:49

Our broadband tv and phone is 35.
3 contract phones is 70.
I have Amazon prime so 8
No Netflix.
So about 113.
Do you have the whole package for tv, loke sports/movies

NameChanger22 · 05/01/2018 11:53

I spend a total of £50 a month a month on broadband and phones. That breaks down as £35 for the landline, calls and broadband, £7 a month on DD's mobile phone contract, £7 a month on Netflix and £1 a month on my mobile (pay as you go, I top it up about once a year now).

FreshHerbs · 05/01/2018 11:59

£20 a month broadband
£22.40 (£14.60 discount included)sky a month but soon will be coming to end of contract and will not be renewing as nobody really watches it in the household.
£27.99 a month Smartphone 1
£35 a month smartphone 2

Four people in household, unlimited minutes, txts and internet on phones and no problems with broadband seems to be super fast

BothersomeCrow · 05/01/2018 12:31

Really interesting.
We have £50/month Virgin package for phone, basic TV and broadband, but need reliable fast broadband for work.
TV licence - £12/month
No Sky or Netflix
Amazon Prime £6.50/month
My phone - £10/month contract plus £10 towards cost of phone
DH - £45/month including new phones every 2 years and old ones given to family.
So far kids don't have phones, just tablets and a CEx habit.

£133.50 a month on connectivity. More than gas&electric, or car running costs, less than council tax, similar to commuting, so reasonable enough I think. 10% of the mortgage!

VioletCharlotte · 05/01/2018 13:07

I've just added up what I spend (me and two teen DS) and it come to £170 a month for mobiles, broadband and TV (inc Netflix). Ridiculous really!

WinifredAtwellsOtherPiano · 05/01/2018 13:44

2 adults, 2 teens here.
We spend about 30 quid on phone calls/data, and another 30 odd depreciating the cost of our phones (assuming 2 years for the DCs’ mid-range smart phones, 3 years for my iPhone and nothing for DH’s which was a freebie).
60 quid-ish for BT fibre, landline, calls and a handful of top-up TV channels
8 quid for Netflix
12 quid for TV licence.

So 140 quid all in - but I could probably get it down about 20 quid more if I went on MSE and did some haggling.

It’s not unreasonable to spend more than that if you have the money to spend and you really want all the sports packages or iPhone Xs all round.

But it is foolish to take Sky’s headline rate when you can easily haggle it down substantially, (and even more foolish to shell out a huge amount for a Sky package you scarcely watch just because you can’t live without the magic Sky box which you could replace for 200 quid cash - I don’t think anyone on this thread has said that, but I’ve seen it elsewhere).

Usernamegone · 05/01/2018 13:59

OMG I pay -
£74 per month for Virgin 200mb bb, phone line, talk weekend, full house tv (all the channels) plus sky sports
£70 - iPhone 7plus for me (largest capacity memory with unlimited calls, text, 20mb of data got it as soon as it came out!) - need to go onto a lower tariff on mat leave!
£15 - DH has my old iPhone so sim only tariff
Total - £149

I’ve just had a heart attack at how much ours are!

BigBaboonBum · 05/01/2018 14:08

Our sky package is £95, phone contracts are 35x4, broadband and phone line is 85, amazon prime is 75 a year, plus Netflix at £8? A month, 12.50 for BT sport a month.

So 350+ a month, plus 75 a year. So 4281 a year. Which is quite disgusting really!

Bellamuerte · 05/01/2018 14:25

We spend £30 on broadband and tv, £20 on two mobile phones. Phones were bought second hand and will be used until they break down. Even with another two phones we'd still only be paying a quarter of what you pay!

NNchangedforthis · 05/01/2018 14:48

Just for 2 adults -
£122 for sky q. Includes movies (which are going) landline, super fast no limits Fibre and his mobile (iPhone 8)
Netflix - free for now as we had a gift card.
Amazon Prime - £79 as someone just HAD to watch the new top gear...
My phone is £10 monthly sim, but I get a new iPhone every 2nd Christmas, paid cash.

Our kids are still young but once they start needing a phone, hoping to buy outright and have cheap monthly sims.

NNchangedforthis · 05/01/2018 14:49

But we are a TV/tech family. My partner and I don’t have expensive hobbies etc and we choose to spend on our technology etc.

Popsicle434544 · 05/01/2018 14:58

Virgin full tv (inc sport and movies)£62
Higest internet inc with virgin price
Mobile phone contracts £120
Amazon prime £8
Netflix is free as nicked me dads password 😁

missadasmith · 05/01/2018 15:03

sounds a lot.

we have 2 giffgaff mobiles (£7.50 each), Netflix @ 7.50 (or similar). And £35 for internet/landline. Total is £57.50 and I still think we can do it cheaper by e.g. changing phone/internet provider. Just too busy to deal with it.

Kmetsch3 · 05/01/2018 16:15

Ta for the replies
I wonder if the people who have kindly given details down to the penny, already had that information in their head, or had to look it up.

I gather that calculating these costs, has been an enlightening experience for some.

We enjoy our iPads, phones, tv, sport, films etc a lot.
As mentioned, we regularly ring around for better deals.

Next week I’ll ask a similar question on booze, fags and dieting.

WickedLazy · 05/01/2018 16:17

The information was in my head.

DayDreamer99 · 05/01/2018 16:23

I thought we paid a small fortune but yours is more!
Unlimited BT Fibre 80mbs download speed
BT mobile phones x3 unlimited everything (galaxy s8)
BT top tv package
Total monthly cost £130
Netflix £8
Amazon £8
Now TV movies (sky movies) £10
Total monthly cost £156. Could probably down grade mobile package for me and dh at renewal but unlimited everything is good for dd age 11, the kid is data mad.

DayDreamer99 · 05/01/2018 16:28

We have a family Spotify account as well think that is £20ish a month.

RebootYourEngine · 05/01/2018 16:47

I pay about £70 a month.

£50 maximum for broadband, landline & calls
£20 in total for me & teen ds.
Both have smartphones that were bought outright second hand.
Ds and i tend to use things like whatsapp and fb messenger for communicating so dont spend much on calls and texts.

LakieLady · 05/01/2018 17:03

We're cheapskates by comparison, and there are only 2 of us:

BT broadband + BT Sport £48 pm

Use Freeview on a Smart tv so nothing

Mobiles: mine is a paltry £7.50 a month because I can't be arsed to choose a new phone and DP has an ancient PAYG phone that he reckons he spends about £5 a month on

So, £60.50 a month. However, this thread has galvanised me into checking out Plusnet and I can get phone, broadband and BT Sport (which we only have for MotoGP) for, I think, £29 a month. That'll bring our monthly costs down to £41.50.

I'm going to take out a month's trial with Netflix so I can binge-watch box sets while I recover from shoulder surgery next week. If I end up getting addicted to it, that will put the bill up a bit.

TwoBlueFish · 05/01/2018 17:36

2 adults, 2 teen DS

SIM only mobiles for everyone £30pm total. DH’s is with BT so gives him BT sport.

super fast broadband, line rental and Now TV entertainment pass £30.99pm from Now TV

Amazon prime £79 annually

So approx £67.50 per month

DH occasionally adds a month of sports which adds about £33pm to the bill.

Kids & I have 2nd hand iPhones. DH has an android. Handsets replaced approximately every 3 years so spread over 3 years works out at about £27pm total for all the handsets.

£250 pm sounds extortionate!
