... and don't bring tour germs into work. Everyone at my DHs office has caught a cold and are sneezing and coughing. My three month old DS has caught it. :(

Mist people can't afford to stay home with a cold.

People catch them so often, disciplinary procedures would be triggered within a year.

AnaWinter · 05/01/2018 05:19

Yabu. Adults or school going children cannot miss work or school with a cold. Sorry your ds is sick.

RestingGrinchFace · 05/01/2018 05:21

YABVU. A cold doesn't mean that you aren't fit to work. The number of days taken off for mere colds (if everyone did so) could grind business to a halt and serverely affect the economy. Little colds are a part of life, they don't really do anyone any harm. Toughen up a bit.

dottycat123 · 05/01/2018 05:32

I work as a nurse in nhs. Our occupational health department issues advice that a common cold should not stop you attending work so based on this yabu. Currently I would estimate about a third of my team have or have had a cold and it has been a really bad one. The nhs couldn't cope if staff went off with a cold .

CheapSausagesAndSpam · 05/01/2018 05:34

OP it's a cold. Not TB. YABU

A cold's a minor and ordinary ailment. A baby catching a cold is normal.

If we all stayed home for every sniffle nobody would have any money and the country would be bankrupt. Wimps who stay off or run to the GP are ridiculous how on earth do you cope when your really ill and have to look after your own family?
Normal every day bugs build immunity unless your immune supressed they do no long term harm and there is some evidence to show catching them helps prevent things like childhood asthma

Oblomov18 · 05/01/2018 05:42

YABVU
It's only a cold.

AuntLydia · 05/01/2018 05:46

It's horrible seeing them poorly when they're that young. But if we all stayed home for a cold then the economy would grind to a halt! People could practice better hygiene though so it doesn't spread so quickly.

I hope the baby gets better soon.

Whambarsarentasfizzyastheywere · 05/01/2018 05:46

I would love to stay at home every time I had a cold but sadly I need to keep my job and pay my bills.

It's hard seeing your baby ill for the first time though so i get why you think people should stay at home. We are probably all a bit PFB the first time round.

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 05/01/2018 05:49

YABVU; it’s just a cold. People get them all the time and the country can’t come to a halt because of it.

If you’re worried about your kid catching a cold now, you’re in for a rough ride.

NovemberWitch · 05/01/2018 05:53

I’m a teacher. I’ve had a heavy cold and a bad cough since mid November. Are you really suggesting that I should have taken 6 or 7 weeks off? I’d just make your DH wear a biohazard suit until he’s better.

JassyRadlett · 05/01/2018 05:53

YABU and "precious" about your bloody 3 month old. Kids get colds. Get over it and yourself.

What a really nasty post about someone’s unwell small baby. I agree the OP is being unreasonable here, but it’s the early hours, she’s probably up with a poorly and miserable baby, and lashing out. A little bit of compassion and understanding might just be in order. I’d suggest ‘getting over yourself’, actually.

AuntLydia · 05/01/2018 05:54

Agree Jessy. There's no need for it.

MistressPage · 05/01/2018 06:08

FancyThatFenceEdge Did you mean to be so rude? Hmm

TheLegendOfBeans · 05/01/2018 06:10

Why don’t you get your DH to stay at work and not come home for 7-10 days? That just as reasonable as what you’re proposing.

Xihha · 05/01/2018 06:11

I work in a reception class, I have had a cold on and off since September, because almost as soon as I get over one cold another child gives me theirs, most of my colleagues are similar. Schools wouldn't have the staff to open if we all took time off for every cold. The children are presumably also sharing their germs with their parents at a similar rate to they are giving them to us, so that would be a lot of people taking time off who don't really need to.

MsHopey · 05/01/2018 06:11

My 5 month old had just got over a pretty bad cold. But 2 months before that he was hospitalised with a viral stomach infection where he had to be on a drip for 3 days. He's my first LO and I was devastated and worried and felt like a shit mom. But there was kids there who were way worse.
So I don't want to be THAT person, but it could be so much worse. It's shit, but they'll be okay.
People have to go to work, in places I've worked if you had 3 occasions off in 6 months you had disciplinary meetings, really can't risk not being able to pay the bills because of a cold.

TheLegendOfBeans · 05/01/2018 06:12

Ps: babies & children catch 8–10 colds a year. Underlying conditions and can make them get very very sick (I know from personal experience) but you’re going to drive yourself insane if you try & hide your child from every germ. VVU.

BamburyFuriou3 · 05/01/2018 06:20

If it's any help dc#2&3 both caught colds from older siblings at about age 4-6 weeks, and their immune system is so much better than dc2 - who I was very precious about and kept away from bugs....

Sorry, but yabu, and actually catching colds young is not such a bad thing in the long run.

BamburyFuriou3 · 05/01/2018 06:20

Dc1

MudCity · 05/01/2018 06:22

I understand your frustration. I am surrounded by people at work sneezing, coughing, streaming....not just your average sniffle but feeling really unwell with it. It is driving me mad.

FancyThatFenceEdge · 05/01/2018 06:23

@MistressPage - No. And i duly apologise. Blame the cold I have.

mumof2sarah · 05/01/2018 06:23

It's a cold you are being unreasonable

SilverBirchTree · 05/01/2018 06:24

I’m with you OP - people should keep their germs at home! No one is that important.

Also how do they know it’s a cold in the early days? Many serious illnesses present with cold or flu like symptoms on the first day.

Pure selfishness to be at work.

I hope you and your family are better soon.
