... and don't bring tour germs into work. Everyone at my DHs office has caught a cold and are sneezing and coughing. My three month old DS has caught it. :(

Sorry. Yes you are. I assume your baby is healthy. Getting colds increases a babies immunity. As does playing in the dirt as children get older.

TheLegendOfBeans · 05/01/2018 06:26

^Also how do they know it’s a cold in the early days? Many serious illnesses present with cold or flu like symptoms on the first day.

Pure selfishness to be at work^

In all seriousness @SilverBirchTree do you work?

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 05/01/2018 06:26

Pure selfishness to be at work.

Oh yes, so selfish. Because everyone knows how great it feels to be at work when you feel like shit Hmm

Seriously?

It's awful when they are small and are under the weather but it will be the first of many many colds. Babies and kids are little germ factories and they will no matter what you do catch many many of them. They & you will find it easier as they get bigger although it will never be much fun.
I've had this cough since early November (I am on immunosuppressants so find it particularly hard to shake off illnesses), it wouldn't be possible to hide myself away from the world for that long and it would be unreasonable when except for a few days I've generally been well enough to function pretty well. The worst days have unfortunately/fortunately been in the holiday anyway.

Buck3t · 05/01/2018 06:32

Think of it like this OP. Your DH gets to return the favour to his colleague once your LO starts nursery, that hotbed of germs. Sorry your LO is ill.

lljkk · 05/01/2018 06:33

People don't seem to catch my colds when I go to work. They moan if I'm coughing, but nobody else gets ill at same time.

Babies catch colds. It's what they do. You can't avoid it.

If people took time off every time they had a cold the country would grind to a halt!! Sorry your baby is poorly but YABU.

I'm sorry your little one is sick Thanks

But most people genuinely can't afford to be off when they have runny noses or a cough, and I doubt the majority of bosses would be happy you rang in sick with a runny nose either.

People need to work, and the majority of colds shouldn't stop otherwise healthy adults from doing so.

Sparklingbrook · 05/01/2018 06:52

YABU it's really unfortunate but that's life.

It's horrible when little babies get poorly, but they will get coughs and colds just as everyone else does.
It may not even have been your DH's office he caught it from, it's everywhere at the moment.

Ringing in sick with a cold is not necessary.

CottonEyeJosephine · 05/01/2018 06:54

If people have flu, a fever d&v etc then absolutely they should be at home. Staying away for a common cold though is unrealistic. I’d have barely been at work since November if I stayed him. Children and babies pick up bugs unfortunately, from everywhere, just one of those things.

EvilDoctorHogmanayDuck · 05/01/2018 06:55

YABU. It's a cold.

pictish · 05/01/2018 06:56

Agree with everyone else...there's no way I'd take time off work for a cold.
Of course we'd all love to spend the duration of a cold at home...but there are these things called mortgages and bills to pay and unfortunately the time off has to be set aside for those times when you're so ill you've got no choice but to stay in bed.

FluffyMcCloud · 05/01/2018 06:57

If everyone with a cold stayed at home the country would grind to s halt! You can't stay off work with a cold. Schools would never be open for a start

strawberrypenguin · 05/01/2018 06:57

YABU I’m afraid. Colds are perfectly acceptable to go to work with - no one would get anything done otherwise!

Hope your DS feels better soon.

Tour · 05/01/2018 06:58

Of course people can’t stay at home for a cold. All of your DH’s office would be at home. Ridiculous

maddiemookins16mum · 05/01/2018 06:59

Not sure what's up with me, my throat is raw, my ears ache, my head is banging and I feel like shite and a bit feverish.
I'm on a train to work. No way can I call in sick the first Friday after the NY (was very tempting though at 3am).
I'll struggle through today with ibuprofen and tea and stay in bed all weekend if I have to.

SimultaneousEquation · 05/01/2018 07:04

Some folk don’t get paid sick leave. It would be nice if we could all stay at home when we have colds but people are often infectious before they feel really bad, and we’d have to shut schools for half the year as a lot of teachers have colds quite a bit due to exposure to children.

Undercoverbanana · 05/01/2018 07:07

You do know that a lot of people don't get paid if they're off sick don't you OP? Would you like to see more people in debt? A bit more homelessness and family breakdown?

I do get a very generous sickness allowance in my job, but the bloody Spanish Inquisition and form-filling on return and threat of disciplinaries stop people going sick.

chocolateiamydrug · 05/01/2018 07:08

most people are not too ill to work with a common cold. for most it is just that - a cold. on what grounds should they stay at home if they are not really ill? taking annual leave? or what?

ButtMuncher · 05/01/2018 07:09

Ah it's horrible when babies get their first colds. But honestly, your baby is just as likely to get a cold from going to the shops, seeing family and going to baby groups, or even the health visitor. Unless you keep them away from all types of contact, they're going to get colds. If I took time off for my cold I'd have been off work since last October.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 05/01/2018 07:11

YABU.

If people took time off every time they had a cough or sniffle then some would be off more than they are in.

Sorry your DC is ill but your idea is ridiculous.

NotACleverName · 05/01/2018 07:11

I'd love to be able to take time off work for a cold, but I can't afford to and would find myself in a disciplinary if I did so.
