AIBU to believe raping 100 women is worth more than nine years in jail?

Meant to add, the process and practice of parole boards also needs to be much more transparent.

Elendon · 04/01/2018 19:02

8 years. Not 18.

Seems like 18 Grin

If the Conservatives really wanted to do something about this (they have overturned the education system), they would have done it.

I'm okay hun @Eltonjohnssyrup

RelapsedChocoholic · 04/01/2018 19:02

(Sorry if it’s already been posted)
There is a petition on change.org to try and get this debated in parliament:

Elendon · 04/01/2018 19:06

Oh and the Conservatives really have done a fine job on setting up the NHS to fail. And in such a short time.

The bollocks that is Brexit negotiations.

No surprise that this has happened really.

Again, it's horrific and my belief is nothing will be done about it. (I live in a Conservative run council area, with a Conservative MP).

This. Ditto the Jon Venables case. It appears to be heavily weighted in favour of offenders. It should also have a process of scrutiny and easier possibilities for overturn.

BishBoshBashBop · 04/01/2018 19:08

@Elendon Maybe take your own advice and leave political of it.

Not sure what NHS or Brexit have to do with this thread.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 04/01/2018 19:10

I live in a Labour run council with a Labour MP. They are also crap.

Eltonjohnssyrup · 04/01/2018 19:11

Well TBF, I'd rather have a creaking NHS and Brexit than have a rapey bastard like this live next door to me. But that's fine. If you're okay with Labours justice policy that's your look out. But just bear in mind Corbyn & co would probably have sentences him to a weeks counselling and blamed it on capitalism.

Elendon · 04/01/2018 19:17

I've said it's horrific. I'm no fan of Labour. You have no idea if a rapey bastard lives next door to you. Warbouy's was caught. How many thousands of others were not caught.

@Eltonjohnssyrup

I'd rather Brexit meant prosperity for all, the NHS was a shining example of a national health service and that women felt safe to be able to walk as freely as men.

prh47bridge · 04/01/2018 19:20

10 years would be a short sentence for one rape

It depends on the details. Under the current sentencing guidelines the sentence for a single rape can be lower than that in the least serious cases, although such cases are rare. However, if Worboys had been convicted after the current guidelines were introduced I would have expected a longer sentence than 10 years given the range of offences of which he was convicted.

PricklyBall

Whether a letter writing campaign is worthwhile depends on your aim. If you want to change the law or the sentencing guidelines feel free, but note that they have both changed since he was imprisoned. Changes are not retrospective so his sentence was not affected.

However, if you want him returned to prison it would be a waste of time. Neither the Home Secretary nor the Justice Secretary has the power to overrule the parole board and return him to prison. Politicians lost the power to prevent prisoners being released in 2002 when the Court of Appeal ruled that this was a breach of human rights.

Regarding the allegations that have surfaced since the original conviction, it is not clear why he was not prosecuted. Whether he can now be prosecuted for these offences depends on what happened. If he has not been charged with these offences and the CPS believe there is enough evidence to give a reasonable chance of successful prosecution they could proceed. However, the problem may be getting a fair trial given the publicity around this case.

I normally confine myself to giving facts on threads about criminal cases but in this case I am going to give an opinion. The original investigation was clearly botched. I am unsure whether the 8 years minimum set was low at the time but I would expect someone convicted of the same offences to get a longer sentence today. I can't comment on whether the parole board is right that he no longer poses a threat to women. But I think he should still be behind bars. I do not think that 10 years in jail is long enough for the offences of which he was convicted. If he had been convicted of all the offences he is alleged to have committed I would have hoped he would remain behind bars for life.

Mightybanhammer · 04/01/2018 19:22

Re Keir Starmer. The DPP is not a political role. It is a senior civil service role. He went into politics after leaving the CPS and after instigating many reforms to improve the way cases involving violence against women were dealt with.

walkingtheplank · 04/01/2018 19:27

Can I suggest that you don't contact the Minister via his constituency office. Contacting him as a constituency MP means he can't respond to you unless he is your MP. He should reply as Minister though.

wibblywobblywoo · 04/01/2018 19:29

Can we leave politics out of this?

Well we are, it's you that isn't Elendon...... Hmm Confused

This is such a serious subject don't start filling it up with your own personal political issues....Brexit Confused the NHS Confused You want to whinge about all of that, start your own thread.

Mightybanhammer · 04/01/2018 19:29

guardianfree · 04/01/2018 19:34

Petition on change.org signed.

My son has just read this in the news. His response: "And I thought the US was f*^ked up....."

Kinda sums it up

Heartoffire · 04/01/2018 19:36

Awful just awful. They didn’t even have the decency to warn his victims. One was cooking tea for her children snd heard vis the radio the bastard would be out.

Her lawyer was talking to radio 5

prh47bridge · 04/01/2018 19:48

Sorry, just to pick up on something up thread, the reason the Secretary of State crops up in judicial reviews of parole board decisions is that a prisoner wanting a decision reviewed will often take action against the Secretary. Parole board decisions are binding on the Secretary of State. I don't think this has been tested in court but my view would be that the Secretary cannot apply for judicial review of a decision. I have a nagging feeling that there is legislation to that effect but I can't find it immediately.

Betti935 · 04/01/2018 19:59

Absolutely appalling. Between that and the other case reported this week about the guy who was released from prison after killing two women and then killed a third removes any doubt that society doesn't give a shit about women.

It was totally predictable that that other guy would kill another woman and it's totally predictable that Worboys will rape many more women - and there'll probably be another 100 before he gets caught again.

peanut2017 · 04/01/2018 20:06

Absolutely makes me sick to my stomach. The hatred towards women is disgusting and almost feels like rape is just seen as sex. Something being done to you and we should just get over it.

Gingernaut · 04/01/2018 20:28

Petition signed.

Much good it'll do....

LittleLionMansMummy · 04/01/2018 20:35

I thought I'd misheard the news. Fucking disgusting.

juliettaa · 04/01/2018 20:41

Petition signed and email sent to my local MP.

I'm sickened by the news of this foul predator being released back into society. Women are no closer to equality than we were decades ago. We've always been second class citizens and decisions such as this just serve to reinforce that belief. Angry
