Smoking weed is......

LockJawTrouble · 29/12/2017 22:17

Just trying to make sense of things. Is it me or smoking weed is not normal? I am fed up of this excuse to the point, where I think I need some reconfirmation , to make sure I am not the only one thinking that.

It seems a bit odd to mostly base your defence of marijuana on the idea that apparently everyone thinks smoking tobacco is fine. They don't. Or on the idea that everyone thinks it's ok to drink alcohol regularly to the point of incapacity. Everybody doesn't think that either.

You can argue about the pros and cons of legality, but on the basis of antisocial behaviour, smell, cost, dependency and effects on health, marijuana, tobacco and alcohol are all pretty dreadful.

I would be appalled if my dc worked for Philip Morris, as I would be appalled if they were smokers or weed smokers.

annandale · 01/01/2018 12:20

I still don't get your point Ta1kin. I hate the tobacco industry and its embrace of murdering people in China now that it's slightly harder to addict westerners. I would be scared if my son started smoking and unhappy if he worked for a tobacco company. There is a strong association between tobacco use and mental illness though from what I have seen it appears to be a self management tool or a poverty association, not a causative element.

Marijuana as I understand it is often likely to be consumed with tobacco anyway but I don't know the independent cancer risks. However evidence of an independent causative/trigger effect on mental illness appears to be growing. It's an exploitative business selling a palliative poison. On top of that it is also illegal and likely to restrict life if you are caught, plus you are likely to be funding criminals. Why is it so bad to consider that as a factor in my opinion?

Indigo911 · 01/01/2018 12:21

Love that I’ve been called a loser, waster, pathetic, sad, stupid and skanky on this thread. Can always rely on MM for OTT generalisations

Ta1kinPeace · 01/01/2018 12:21

curry
If you kids decide to work in a place where Marijuana is as legal as tobacco, would they still incur your wrath for smoking one but not the other?

short of dealing arms
but dealing arms is legal, as is selling tobacco.

Ta1kinPeace · 01/01/2018 12:25

annan
it is also illegal and likely to restrict life if you are caught, plus you are likely to be funding criminals.
So legalise it - as is now the case for one in five Amerians
and the Dutch and the Portugese and other sensible countries
and cut the criminal element out of the loop.

Indigo911 · 01/01/2018 12:25

@tollgate I don’t lose control when I smoke weed. I smoked it two nights ago and managed to put together a very detailed PowerPoint presentation for work on Tuesday and also clean my house from top to bottom whilst stoned. I also don’t smoke it because I need it to relax. I smoke it to help with pain from health problems I have, and also because I just enjoy it.

MuseumOfCurry · 01/01/2018 12:41

Talking I don't care about the legality of tobacco, pot, or dealing arms. Legality is something that usually overlaps with my moral judgements, but not always.

DamsonGin · 01/01/2018 12:52

Some people are fine with it, but I've also seen a family destroyed by psychosis, violence, MH resulting in being sectioned multiple times, and that individual no longer seeing their children. It can really fuck some people up.

CoteDAzur · 01/01/2018 12:53

"Smoking weed=lost all motivation to brush his teeth"

That's a completely ridiculous assumption.

Over 14 million people in the UK have consumed weed. How many toothless people have you ever seen in your life? Hmm

GnomeDePlume · 01/01/2018 12:57

If my DCs were to work for a tobacco company I would say that is their choice not mine. Personally I won't work in financial services but that is my choice.

EmpressoftheMundane · 01/01/2018 13:12

It isn't normal. It's immature and childish.

Indigo911 · 01/01/2018 13:17

@empress guess i’ll Just have to suffer with the pain of MS symptoms then to avoid being immature

Tessliketrees · 01/01/2018 13:17

How many toothless people have you ever seen in your life?

Errr dentures? Lot's of weedbongs have denture holders because so many weedheads have them.

pollythedolly · 01/01/2018 13:20

*A precursor to stronger drugs
A way to increase your chances of mental health issues
A great pain killer that should be licensed for short term use after surgery's etc or long term for chronic

It's many things, and like any else has pros and cons*

Absolutely agree with this.

BossyBitch · 01/01/2018 13:25

^^ This!!!

FWIW, it's rather normal in my circles, which are mostly made up of very together professionals in their late twenties to early forties. I've smoked weed with my boss before. Arguably the most concerning thing about that was that our client really loved the proposal we came up with in the process, leading to us pondering the question whether we should all be on drugs a lot more often for business reasons. Confused

And, no, I'm not saying it's something that should be encouraged, just that the assertion that all people who do it are useless stoners with unbrushed teeth is utter bollocks!

SinisterBumFacedCat · 01/01/2018 13:43

Not normal now I am in my 40's but fairly widespread in my teens. Personally I found it made me feel sleepy and bored, and other people who smoked it transformed into dull company.

Incidentally, do those of you who do use cannabis feel confident to drive when stoned? A colleague of mine has a daughter who doesn't want to smoke at home, so drives out to the woods for a joint then drives home again. I think this is pretty irresponsible but colleague isn't too bothered.

Indigo911 · 01/01/2018 13:51

@sinister depends how much i’d Smoked. If I was just sharing a joint with someone that wasn’t particularly strong then I can easily do everything like driving, cooking, working as i normally would.
If I felt very stoned then I personally wouldn’t drive until it had worn off a bit after a few hours. I wouldn’t want to be a risk to anyone else on the roads if I was feeling very drowsy

Ta1kinPeace · 01/01/2018 14:54

Cannabis is illegal due to a total fluke of circumstance.
It is only a "gateway drug" because it is illegal.
Hence why more and more places are making it legal
so that police resources go towards real crime
and mental health resources can be properly targeted.

Both tobacco and alcohol do far more harm

LoniceraJaponica · 01/01/2018 15:33

"Incidentally, do those of you who do use cannabis feel confident to drive when stoned? A colleague of mine has a daughter who doesn't want to smoke at home, so drives out to the woods for a joint then drives home again. I think this is pretty irresponsible but colleague isn't too bothered."

That is extremely irresponsible and as illegal as drink driving Hmm

It’s illegal to drive if either:

you’re unfit to do so because you’re on legal or illegal drugs
you have certain levels of illegal drugs in your blood (even if they haven’t affected your driving)

Penalties for drug driving:

a minimum 1 year driving ban
an unlimited fine
up to 6 months in prison
a criminal record

Indigo911 I take it that you think it is OK to drink and drive then?

Indigo911 · 01/01/2018 16:20

rolls eyes yes...of course I fully support drunk drivers. Don’t be so ridiculous!
What some of us are trying to argue on here is that weed shouldn’t be illegal if alcohol and tobacco aren’t when they both cause far more problems to this country.
We don’t all blindly follow laws just because they are in place. It was illegal to be gay just a few decades ago so that tells you all you need to know about how pointless a lot of laws in this country can be.
If I drive after a small joint (that’s mainly just nicotine) then I wait a few hours and only do it if I feel completely sober. Yes, it may still be detected in my blood stream for quite a while after I’ve smoked it, but I’m willing to take the risk of being caught, just as I’m sure millions of others are. There would be such small quantities in my blood stream that they’d be wasting their time and money taking me to court over it.
Having just one glass of wine effects me far more than a few puffs on a joint, yet it’s legal to drive after one drink. Alcohol also causes way more traffic accidents than cannabis does, so surely it should be illegal to drive after consuming any alcohol at all.
It’s extremely rare that I drive after smoking as I only do it at weekends before I go to sleep and I rarely go anywhere that requires a car the following day as I live in the city centre. Im sure a lot of you holier than thou posters who consume alcohol have driven after a couple of drinks at least once in your life

EmpressoftheMundane · 01/01/2018 17:23

indigo, I would classify medicinal use under doctor supervision as something completely apart from"smoking weed" which implies recreational use. It's like abusing any other drug.

Chattymummyhere · 01/01/2018 17:28

Honestly the only people I know who do it as adults are the ones who can’t hold a steady job and seem to flit from one disaster to the next. Never seeming to have enough money for bills but always stinking of the stuff.

I don’t want it stinking up my house because or around my children. It’s an illegal drug regaurdless of if you believe it should be or not currently it is and I wish much more would be done to stop it being smoked so causally stinking up the place.

Indigo911 · 01/01/2018 17:29

@empress I do a bit of both. I smoke it as it helps with some of my symptoms, and I also smoke it because I enjoy it. I only smoke it on Saturdays and occasionally on a Sunday too so I wouldn’t class that as abusing it but each to their own

gillybeanz · 01/01/2018 17:31

I don't drive so don't have to bother about effects on driving, but dh shares the same philosophy as Indigo.

FWIW, I'm glad it's illegal.
It's the one thing that isn't taxed and managed by the idiots in Westminster Grin
We know what we are getting, and nobody gets hurt, so win win for us.
I don't recognise much of what the anti brigade are harping on about.

CurryWorst · 01/01/2018 17:34

Thats such rubbish. You;re talking about one type of person only. Any number of your friends and family might smoke it but since you only recognise it in your stereotype you would have no idea.
