AIBU to really not like New Year that much?

Off the back of another thread, does anyone feel indifferent to NYE or not like it? It feels wrong just typing that Blush

I've never really liked it, no matter what I'm doing for it! Blush And have always felt pressure to 'do well' and to achieve things in the following twelve months, rather than feeling hopeful and excited about the New Year.

I never do anything for NYE. I don’t hate it, I just don’t do anything. Then again I don’t have that many friends, none who live near me really.
New Years Day is OK, but that’s because we do a family thing that’s been going on for years and it’s fun to organise.

Sparklesocks · 29/12/2017 00:30

YANBU - I think there’s a lot of pressure to be doing something amazing and fun which means it can be stressful to live up to that - but if you prefer a night in with the telly too then that’s ok 😊

esk1mo · 29/12/2017 00:33

i dislike it. infact i dislike the whole time period around it because it messes up my routine. everything sort of halts around this time. i hate the fact i had to think ahead to new years day when food shopping, because no shops will be open.

i also view the year academically (ie september to may, then summer) from my years at school, then undergrad & post-grad. so new year just seems like a blip in the middle!

and lastly, this time of year makes me reflect on everything i havent achieved, and how stagnant i am.

ScreamingValenta · 29/12/2017 00:33

I realised in my 20s that there was no real point trying to do anything special for NYE - going out is a complete waste of time (overpriced, busy, impossible to get a taxi) and lacking a crowd to join for a house party, I now just stay in, have a bottle of wine, and go to bed once the fireworks have finished. I do however quite enjoy waking up on New Year's Day and experiencing schadenfreude when thinking of the number of people who'll be writing off the day to terrible hangovers!

BulletFox · 29/12/2017 00:35

I love listening to clock chimes at midnight, but that's it!

kittymamma · 29/12/2017 01:39

I always hated New Year. Never enjoyed it, I'm not particularly sociable and dislike the cold so its not really my thing at all.

Then my son was born on New Years day and gave it meaning.

allegretto · 29/12/2017 01:42

I never stay up until midnight as I have always hated it.

steff13 · 29/12/2017 01:45

We get together with other families and play board games and eat lots of good food and toast at midnight. It's my favorite holiday. No obligations or expectations, just fun with friends.

just5morepeas · 29/12/2017 01:46

Used to know a guy who said he hated new years because "the pub's full of amateurs".

But yeah, at the risk of being a grouch, it's over hyped and generally dull.

CountessofGrantham · 29/12/2017 01:47

I detest NYE. Always have done since going out with my parents as a teenager and having old men trying to shove their tongues down my throat at midnight. It also just depresses me so every year it’s a personal challenge to be in bed asleep when midnight strikes. Luckily DH hates it too.

tobee · 29/12/2017 01:50

I try to be as low key as possible. For some reason Old Lang Syne gives me the creeps.

But I think it's a dangerous time of year in that a lot of people's relationships bite the dust. People have spent an unnatural amount time together as a family at Christmas, people often feel Christmas has been not the magical time they thought it would be. So they make a New Years resolution to put themselves first, blame their partner for them being disappointed in life. When they should be responsible for themselves.

stopgap · 29/12/2017 01:51

I hate it. I treat it as I would any other day, and rarely bother staying up to midnight.

I adore Christmas, though, and believe you can’t attend too many Christmas parties, have too much tinsel etc.

crazycatgal · 29/12/2017 01:53

I agree with you OP

I never go out for NYE because even shit places charge a fortune for entry and taxis are dear.

New Years Resolutions are pointless because you are able to set goals and tasks for yourself at any point of the year. Most people set at least one New Years Resolution that is forgotten two weeks later.

GlitterGlassEye · 29/12/2017 01:57

I used to hate it. House parties with family when I was little, too much going on. It was ok as I got older and could drink to ring the bells in.

Determined to start this New Year with a clear head so planning not to booze but I will stay up to watch Still Game.

CiderwithBuda · 29/12/2017 02:00

Not overly keen either. Hate the pressure to stay up till midnight and toast the NY with more fizz (if with friends). I normally just want my bed by then.

Haven't done anything the last few years - in bed by ten usually!

We were in Dubai last year and there was a big gala dinner in in th hotel and we did that - no other options- buffet by the pool which was nice and got chatting to some people. Headed up to room around 11.45 though and watched fireworks from balcony rather than take part in the enforced merriment downstairs.

This year it's just us and DS. Nice dinner and some wine planned and an early night is suspect. Unless we push the boat out and binge watch some TV!

Allgirlskidsanddogs · 29/12/2017 02:04

It’s one second changing to another.

The nature to reflect on life, goals and progress, or lack of, can be demoralising.

As a single parent it’s not feasible to go out and celebrate, hardly any family and my closest friends are both away. I don’t usually go to bed early, but I won’t be staying up especially to ‘see it in’.

HelenaDove · 29/12/2017 02:32

I love Christmas but have always found New Year to be melancholy. When i was at school it meant going back after the lovely long Christmas holiday and back to being bullied

Now the way things are going in general in the UK and the rest of the world things seem to be getting worse for many and why would ppl want to celebrate more of the same and possibly worse to come. Those who have the changeover to UC coming in the New Year for instance.

NY has always made me feel very sad though.

seafooodplatter · 29/12/2017 02:38

I agree.

I don't go out to bars or clubs to celebrate anymore. Its all hyped up but isn't exciting at all to me. I do love a normal night out but not NYE.

It's freezing cold. Everything costs way more. Taxi queues. Full of drunken knob heads everywhere. Hangover the next day is a killer.

I will be getting the kids (4 and 3 months) to sleep as normal and watching a film with a takeaway and glass of wine with my DH. Fire on, curtains drawn, thick blankets, comfy clothes on and feeling quite smug watching people falling apart on Facebook after a few too many jäger bombs while rambling on about the "new year new me" bullshit Grin

HelenaDove · 29/12/2017 02:48

Speaking of new year new me i wish the fucking diet industry would give it a rest with their adverts until 2nd Jan. Its not like this industry wont make any money in Jan I saw the first TV advert on Boxing Day. They dont need to be advertising while its still the Christmas period. Guilt tripping ppl while they are enjoying themselves in a time period that only lasts a few days anyway.

LostSight · 29/12/2017 05:10

There are people who like New Year? Confused

fastfrank · 29/12/2017 05:21

I don't really understand why it's such a big deal. I'd rather go to bed at usual time and wake up the next day as normal. I'm too bloody tired Grin

Cakeorchocolate · 29/12/2017 08:20

It's just another day. Very much overhyped.

I may stay awake to watch the fireworks (we get to see loads from where we live so I like to watch those) but I also have a tendency to nod off and that's more important! 😁

Never go out, not sure if I ever have on NY tbh. Maybe once. Don't do resolutions, don't make a fuss.

thecatsarecrazy · 29/12/2017 08:29

I hate it. Find it depressing. Last year i was heavily pregnant and looking forward to having my baby in jan but everything went to shit. Me and dh had some issues, baby had to be monitored then induced then he was in hospital for 4 weeks and we were miles from home.
Normally i spend it with my dad but tbh he brings the mood down moaning. I have to work nyd at 9.30 and my husband will have to take me as no bus so i think i will go round it this year.

HRTpatch · 29/12/2017 08:29

I hated it with my ex.
Love it with my partner.
It depends who you're with and what your circumstances are

CaptainHammer · 29/12/2017 08:31

I don’t like it or do anything for it. Which is great for work as it means I’ll always cover someone that wants it off!
