Cold gammon, pickles etc....and hot mash - it's tradition I'm told!

This is tonight's dinner.
Cold gammon (done in coke in the slow cooker two days ago).
A variety of jarred pickles, onions, beetroot, red cabbage, gherkins etc.
Mash.

Now, I'm told this is 'traditional' for Boxing Day down these parts (Kent), but it just seems odd.

I do of course realise it's not Boxing Day but we weren't hungry last night after a massive bubble and Squeek for lunch so had a turkey baguette instead.

I've suggested making home made chunky chips or wedges instead but have been told 'oh no, it has to be mash!'. I just don't think it 'goes', a bit like in the same way sweetcorn on a Sunday roast doesn't go.

Disclaimer: this is lighthearted and I'm never dictated to as to what should or should not be cooked in this house 😊.

It goes!

nancy75 · 27/12/2017 15:48

It s the only food allowed on Boxing day and yes it has to be mash, chips are wrong wrong wrong Grin

Sirzy · 27/12/2017 15:48

Sounds fine to me

Oysterbabe · 27/12/2017 15:49

Sounds delicious.

UnreasonablyPissedOff · 27/12/2017 15:49

No, not mash! We had similar last night - we had cold ham and turkey, pickles and relish, then hot red cabbage, re-heated honey and mustard parsnips and hot freshly baked potatoes with loads of butter and salt and it was deeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelicious!

Mash would be all wrong!

I think chunky chips / wedges would be far better than mash..

lougle · 27/12/2017 15:50

Totally traditional here (Hampshire), although we'd normally stick with left over gravy (hot) rather than pickles.

BestIsWest · 27/12/2017 15:50

I’m with you on the chips OP. In fact that’s what we’re having for tea tonight.
Mash is fine with sausages and onion gravy.

lougle · 27/12/2017 15:52

Hmmm.... I retract, for accuracy. Boxing Day is fresh gammon. 27th January is left over Christmas Day meat and Boxing Day Gammon with mash. Boxing Day is always gammon, it's the law, but Christmas Day meat changes, depending on what we fancy.

Angiefernackerpan · 27/12/2017 15:53

Mash is only for those who don't like bubble and squeak! I'm doing both today. I'm in Kent, traditional here.

LizzieSiddal · 27/12/2017 15:53

It’s tradition to have Nigellas ham in coke with pickles, salad and cheese and potatoes pie on Boxing Day in this house. Dh always makes it, I HATE mashed potatoes of any kind, so I get some chunky chips.

Dh also adds cold beans to his Xmas Hmm. He’s very odd!

OliviaStabler · 27/12/2017 15:53

Gammon in Coke?!?! No thanks.

maddiemookins16mum · 27/12/2017 15:53

Surely the 'juices' from the jarred beetroot and pickled onions will run into the mash though.

I'm going to have to do chips for me I think.

Where I come from (West Oxon) mash would be unheard of, it would be chips (and tinned ham).

Cheesy mash for us. DCs agree that it's the best part of the festive food!.

ILookedintheWater · 27/12/2017 15:54

not mash...bubble and squeak!
You had bubble and squeak on Boxing Bay...why on earth didn't you have the cold meat and pickles?

nancy75 · 27/12/2017 15:55

Tinned ham Shock

Bambamber · 27/12/2017 15:55

YABU you've got to have mash!

fourpawswhite · 27/12/2017 15:55

Cheesy mash here as well, just started it just now. Once made goes in oven topped with cheese till crispy on top.

LizzieSiddal · 27/12/2017 15:55

Olivia it’s a Nigella recipe and is delicious.

Sirzy · 27/12/2017 15:56

Tinned ham over proper roasted joint? Shock

happymummy12345 · 27/12/2017 15:57

Cold meat and mash on Boxing Day is the best thing ever

LaurelLiar · 27/12/2017 15:58

Nooooo not mash! New potatoes with butter.

whifflesqueak · 27/12/2017 15:59

I am typing this incredulously from West Oxfordshire...

tinned ham??? And no mash? Xmas Shock

Butteredparsn1ps · 27/12/2017 16:00

DH introduced me to this on Boxing Day many years ago. We mostly prefer it to Christmas Dinner.

naturalnursery · 27/12/2017 16:01

I LOVE hot mash with cold meat and salad. But then I love chunky chips too.

AdaColeman · 27/12/2017 16:03

Mash goes with hot gammon, cabbage and parsley sauce.

Cold gammon and pickles need chips or French Fried potatoes as any fule kno.
