Cold gammon, pickles etc....and hot mash - it's tradition I'm told!

This is tonight's dinner.
Cold gammon (done in coke in the slow cooker two days ago).
A variety of jarred pickles, onions, beetroot, red cabbage, gherkins etc.
Mash.

Now, I'm told this is 'traditional' for Boxing Day down these parts (Kent), but it just seems odd.

I do of course realise it's not Boxing Day but we weren't hungry last night after a massive bubble and Squeek for lunch so had a turkey baguette instead.

I've suggested making home made chunky chips or wedges instead but have been told 'oh no, it has to be mash!'. I just don't think it 'goes', a bit like in the same way sweetcorn on a Sunday roast doesn't go.

Disclaimer: this is lighthearted and I'm never dictated to as to what should or should not be cooked in this house 😊.

When I lived at home we had cooked ham (that was cooked on Christmas Eve), pickled onions, pickled red cabbage and bread for breakfast on Christmas Day. My dads side of the family are from Kent and this is where my dad got it from.

PissedOffNeighbour · 27/12/2017 19:47

Nigella’s trashy coke ham isn’t nearly as good as her Christmas ham!

Beakyplinders · 27/12/2017 19:48

My in-laws do this every boxing day, I'm not a fan but it won't kill me to eat it one day out of 365.

thecatsthecats · 27/12/2017 19:51

That would give me indigestion. All that hot and cold and sour stuff altogether.

ProfYaffle · 27/12/2017 19:56

Ugh - MIL does this too. Cold meat, really dry mash and salad with no dressing. Took the best part of a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc to help me choke that lot down.

froomeonthebroom · 27/12/2017 19:58

Cold baked ham, salad, pickles and baked potatoes here. Anything else on boxing day is wrong ddad I'm looking at you; duck FFS

SnowKidsarehere · 27/12/2017 22:34

Yummm Mash for me please. Preferably with salad cream in it also Grin

Grilledaubergines · 27/12/2017 22:56

Oh yes, cold ham, pickles and mash is tradition (not far from Kent). Love when beetroot juice turns the mash pink! A few silverskins, a wally or two. Delicious!

glitterglitters · 27/12/2017 23:07

We have these sort of potato skins where you bake them, scoop them mix with Philadelphia, refill and sprinkle with paprika before returning to the oven. This is traditional with all the pickles (paying close attention to both pickled eggs and piccalilli). Then we have bubble and squeak for dinner, slightly caught, with a fried egg and HP sauce. This is from DH's family and cold meats are mine.

glitterglitters · 27/12/2017 23:08

It's also the single best meal of the year, so much so my sister made it for my birthday once (August) and I flat out cried GrinGrin

Grilledaubergines · 27/12/2017 23:11

Oh and pickled walnuts - Boxing Day would need cancelling without them!

glitterglitters · 27/12/2017 23:12

Also acceptable are turkey sandwiches with butter, mayo and loads of salt and pepper.

Xmas Sad

We've finished all our leftovers and I'm sad with just the crap cheese left in the fridge.

CheeseGirl4 · 28/12/2017 22:39

I cannot comprehend cold meat, hot mash and pickles, it doesn't appeal at all.

zukiecat · 28/12/2017 23:39

No traditional Boxing Day meal here, usually just have whatever we have in the fridge/freezer, sometimes no lunch at all if I'm waiting for payday to be able to do food shopping

Your meal sounds lovely, apart from the mash, I hate mashed tatties!

On the occasions that I do gammon in the slow cooker I either have chips or I like new tatties boiled

Slaylormoon · 28/12/2017 23:49

It's tradition and I look forward to it as much as Christmas dinner.

LadyLoveYourWhat · 28/12/2017 23:59

Jacket potatoes here (I'm a Kentish Maid born to a Maid of Kent) - but they're essentially mash with bonus crispy skin.
