Cold gammon, pickles etc....and hot mash - it's tradition I'm told!

This is tonight's dinner.
Cold gammon (done in coke in the slow cooker two days ago).
A variety of jarred pickles, onions, beetroot, red cabbage, gherkins etc.
Mash.

Now, I'm told this is 'traditional' for Boxing Day down these parts (Kent), but it just seems odd.

I do of course realise it's not Boxing Day but we weren't hungry last night after a massive bubble and Squeek for lunch so had a turkey baguette instead.

I've suggested making home made chunky chips or wedges instead but have been told 'oh no, it has to be mash!'. I just don't think it 'goes', a bit like in the same way sweetcorn on a Sunday roast doesn't go.

Disclaimer: this is lighthearted and I'm never dictated to as to what should or should not be cooked in this house 😊.

Cold gammon can only go with Bubble and Squeak. And pickles.

maddiemookins16mum · 27/12/2017 16:06

#Disclaimer2 - the tinned ham and chips was circa 1978. The tinned ham always came in the hamper from the Milkman.

We have it Christmas Eve, Dh cooks it every year.

I like my dc, like the gammon HOT though with mash and green veg ( I’m not keen on pickles and beetroot) dh and some other odd guests like the gammon cold with mash and pickles

Gammon also good with thick cut chips cooked in goose fat 😋

Howyoualldoworkme · 27/12/2017 16:09

Baked potatoes surely? Mash is next best but red cabbage is a must!

LizzieSiddal · 27/12/2017 16:10

I remember tinnned ham in the 70s, in a hamper 😂. It was quite tasty!

Chickoletta · 27/12/2017 16:10

This is one of our great family traditions too (in Cornwall) but we fry the mash. One of the best Christmas meals IMO.

Basseting · 27/12/2017 16:11

any fule kno Grin
Loving the Whizz for Atoms work...

mmmm cabbage and parsley sauce. eat or be an uterley wet weeed

froshiechipandbrickie · 27/12/2017 16:13

Surely the 'juices' from the jarred beetroot and pickled onions will run into the mash though.

I really don’t see the issue. It actually sounds quite delicious imo :)!

SquigglePigs · 27/12/2017 16:14

It's traditional in my DH's family too except with jacket potatoes or boulangerie potatoes.

Hoppinggreen · 27/12/2017 16:14

Mash goes with nothing, it’s horrible

Whinesalot · 27/12/2017 16:17

It was tradition at my gps on boxing day only we had roast potatoes, pickles and cold meats.

maddiemookins16mum · 27/12/2017 16:17

Ok, I'm thinking cheese, onion and potato pie (so basically softened onions mixed with mash with grated cheese and finished in the oven so it goes all crusty on top).

Yep, mash, cold meats and pickles for Boxing Day here - both DH's and my families have adhered to this as long as I can remember. We used to have DH's grandma's home made pickled onions (the sort that were capable of blowing your head off) but she sadly died a few years back.

NorbertTheDragon · 27/12/2017 16:18

My ex's family always had it, not just on Boxing Day but on a Monday with leftovers from the Sunday roast.

I had it once. That was enough.

ItsChristmoose · 27/12/2017 16:20

I just made a chicken, ham and broccoli bake with lots of lovely left over stuffing as the crunchy topping:)

Clayhead · 27/12/2017 16:21

Gammon in Coke?!?! No thanks.

More for me then Grin. It's gorgeous, just a sugar syrup to cook it in!

Loonoonow · 27/12/2017 16:21

You are all animals. It's cold turkey and roasted crushed new potatoes with coleslaw and chili jam. With a baked Camembert for veggies.

natwebb79 · 27/12/2017 16:22

When I saw the title of the thread my first thought was 'Well yeah, of course that's right'. I'm from Maidstone though so perhaps us Kentish folk are dead common. 😀

LockedOutOfMN · 27/12/2017 16:23

We have cold meat with hot vegetables for every day after Christmas day. None of us really likes mash, but I'm sure we'd add that to the hot vegetable menu if we did.

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 27/12/2017 16:25

Cheesy mash with different leftover cheeses, yes the pickling juices run in to it, add salad cream too.....drools

BertieBotts · 27/12/2017 16:26

Never had that but it sounds absolutely amazing! Will have to try it some time.

maddiemookins16mum · 27/12/2017 16:26

I had never heard of such a combination until moving to Kent, the cold meat and mash is just about understandable but with jarred beetroot and gherkins!!
I'm not from round here you see.

Urgh, my PIL served this for years for boxing day lunch. Cold ham, lumpy mash and beetroot. No thank you.

Chewbecca · 27/12/2017 16:27

Yep, that's correct here in Essex too

MrsKoala · 27/12/2017 16:27

I was planning something similar got gammon and Turkey leftovers and a gourmet pork pie thing. pots of salads, cheeses, stuffed peppers and I was going to do potato/sweet potato wedges and french/pitta bread. DH is not impressed tho and has said 'hmmmm and theres pizza in the freezer'. Charming.

TBF he hates 'cold' food. But i love it. So if he wants oven pizza he can crack on. I've cooked big dinners 4 days running.
