Cold gammon, pickles etc....and hot mash - it's tradition I'm told!

This is tonight's dinner.
Cold gammon (done in coke in the slow cooker two days ago).
A variety of jarred pickles, onions, beetroot, red cabbage, gherkins etc.
Mash.

Now, I'm told this is 'traditional' for Boxing Day down these parts (Kent), but it just seems odd.

I do of course realise it's not Boxing Day but we weren't hungry last night after a massive bubble and Squeek for lunch so had a turkey baguette instead.

I've suggested making home made chunky chips or wedges instead but have been told 'oh no, it has to be mash!'. I just don't think it 'goes', a bit like in the same way sweetcorn on a Sunday roast doesn't go.

Disclaimer: this is lighthearted and I'm never dictated to as to what should or should not be cooked in this house 😊.

I'm from Yorkshire, I eat cheese with Christmas cake.

But mash with cold cuts and pickles? I'm not a fricking animal.

Blatherskite · 27/12/2017 16:31

Cold meat and pickles is fine but I don't like mash.

It has to be dauphinoise potatoes/potato gratin! The creamy richness is perfect with the cold ham.

I now want - no need this and have none!

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 27/12/2017 16:33

Sounds fabulous Maddie, I'll be round soon 😄🍷

manandbeast · 27/12/2017 16:34

Mash is traditional.
I am an escapee from Kent.

MrsKoala · 27/12/2017 16:34

Maddie - i live in Kent (but only 2 years) and i've never heard of it being a thing. I shall start canvassing in the local pubs and feedback. Purely for data purposes of course.

Firenight · 27/12/2017 16:35

Mash is far too much effort. Jacket potatoes here.

MakChoon · 27/12/2017 16:36

Correct here in Herts too (we love it almost as much as Christmas dinner).

monkeysee100 · 27/12/2017 16:37

I'd prefer chips to warm mash and cold meat.

We had a gluten free vegan curry suitable for diabetics yesterday due to various dietary needs. I still had to some separate sweet and sour for my DF who has ibs!! Sprout version of sag aloo to accompany

diddl · 27/12/2017 16:37

Should be bubble & squeak, fried pots or baked pots I think.

Only mash if it's reheated leftover!

MrsKoala-sounds fab-room for one more??

happypoobum · 27/12/2017 16:37

Yes, I am in Sussex and mash is the law at our house.

HardAssSanta · 27/12/2017 16:37

Grew up in Kent and we always had mash with cold meats, pickles and salads. I still have it as a treat occasionally and the mash must be eaten with salad cream.

chaplin1409 · 27/12/2017 16:38

We have that boxing day with grated cheese too.

NormHonal · 27/12/2017 16:39

Not from Kent, further west, although grandparents were from up north, but yes, it's got to be Bubble and Squeak/hot mash with red cabbage, pickled beetroot and cold ham, and leftover Christmas meat.

It's a better meal than Christmas Dinner.

Sgtmajormummy · 27/12/2017 16:41

We had cold meat and pickles for lunch today- the last of the XMas leftovers apart from the cake, must be a record!
But there were hot buttered tortellini as a starter. I think you need warm food at some point in the meal and mash sounds fine, especially with gammon...

OhYouBadBadKitten · 27/12/2017 16:42

has to be chips. Proper ones. Yum!

BMW6 · 27/12/2017 16:43

Mash, cold meat and pickles totally traditional here (Southampton).

MrsKoala · 27/12/2017 16:43

We had bubble and squeak fried with lardons and sausages with fried duck eggs and beans for brunch. That was lovely.

theftbyfinding · 27/12/2017 16:43

Not mash! We're having cold ham with potatoes fried in olive oil, garlic and rosemary, pickles on the side.

TroysMammy · 27/12/2017 16:44

Gammon, chips and pickles or gammon, mash and parsley sauce.

MrsKoala · 27/12/2017 16:46

ExH's family (Wirral) used to serve all their meat cold and have hot veg and gravy with it. I used to ask for my meat to be warmed in the microwave. Once i did that then everyone started asking too. exMIL was the only one with cold meat and had a face like a slapped arse and shouted at us 'HAVEN'T ANY OF YOU HEARD OF COLD CUTS'. I said if it was all cold i'd like it. It was just the cold/hot ratio and putting hot gravy on fridge cold meat made my mouth feel weird.

RaindropsAndSparkles · 27/12/2017 16:59

No, no, no. I am from Kent and boxing day law is:

Cold Turkey
Stuffing
Cold Gammon
Other cold stuff that might be left like salmon and pork pie
Cheese board
Pickle tray with: onions, baby beets and haimisher cucumbers.
Anti-pasti tray with: artichokes, olives, sun dried
Salad with: tiny toms, black olives, mozzarella pearls, basil
Green salad with: mixed leaves, cu, rocket, avocado
Special roastiez: garlic infused olive oil, salt, pepper, oregano, parmesan.

Then: Christmas cake, mince pies and left over Yule.

Might spice up a few bottles of mulled with cinnamon sticks, brandy, drop of fresh oj. Best dinner of Christmas.

The 27th is pie. Turkey, ham, mush, shallots, gravy, wine, cream. That is served with MASH. Pie goes with MASH.

diddl · 27/12/2017 17:05

" 'HAVEN'T ANY OF YOU HEARD OF COLD CUTS'."

Yeah, but you don't serve them with veg & gravy, do you?

Still, 10/10 to her for trying!

Allthebestnamesareused · 27/12/2017 17:06

Yes that is entirely normal with some cold turkey too

MrsKoala · 27/12/2017 18:23

Well that was our disagreement Diddl. She felt cold cuts meant just the meat and then hot accompaniments and I felt cold cuts meant cold left overs with other cold stuff and I could stretch to hot chips, but not a full roast dinner with fridge cold meat.

They insisted it must be a north/south divide thing. But I’ve dated (and married) other people from t’north and never had that combo before. She was pretty hilarious tho, she cooked all her meat the day before for 3 times as long.

After the year she did the medium sized Turkey for 17 hrs I offered to host. Imagine my surprise when I woke Xmas day at 9 am to the smell of cooking meat. When I went to investigate she said smugly ‘it’s okay, you obviously forgot so I put it on at 5am. I still doubt it’ll be done by 3pm’. Shock Grin

And you are always welcome here for dinner Diddl ;)

tygr · 27/12/2017 19:31

Cold turkey, mashed potato and peas is the traditional Boxing Day meal here (originally from London).

We also have pickles and other cold meats available.
