Children freezing in buggies

Would you sit outside on a chair for an hour in the current weather, wearing leggings and a mid thigh-length jacket, no hat, gloves or blanket? No? Thought not - so why do so many people keep putting children in buggies without enough proper warm clothes/blanket etc!!?? Just been for a walk today in 1degree cold weather, wind chill makes it feel like -4. Came across a granmother standing chatting to two friends. All dressed in gloves, hats and parka types COATS cos of the cold weather. Little tot in pushchair facing into the cold wind wearing leggings and a jacket. Her little hands looked frozen- like the rest of her. I said (nicely)to the woman that the lo looked v chilly. Was ignored. tried again and was ignored. Wibu to mention anything? I am amazed that so many people seem unaware that a small person sitting still in a buggy needs more layers under and over them than the person keeping warm pushing the buggy. I feel so bad for these tots i keep seeing with pinched faces and blue hands. :(

To be honest I took my son out today, he's 16 months old. He took his hat off. Took his gloves off. Threw his feet over the cosy consistently. Tried with a thick blanket, he kicked this on the floor too.

So yeah, what can you do. Take a horse to water an all that.

I find it very upsetting seeing cold children/ babies!

Mine aren’t cold though. You are assuming they’re cold, based on your own body temperature

My child would scream and scream if she were too hot. Is that preferable to taking her coat off so she is happy and comfortable, just because people think she should wear it? Am i a better parent for forcing her to wear a coat so she overheats, or for taking her coat off despite opinions so she is a comfortable temperature?

Dd went out today without a coat. Judge away. But it’s just as miserable being too hot as it it is too cold.

Love all the hysteria about babies freezing to death and getting pneumonia and going very quiet because of the shock of cold Confused

It's not like you let them express their opinion about the hat and gloves and then just think oh well, they're fine, and ignore them for the next three hours. You check on them! You talk to them (hopefully) and look at them and feel their hands etc periodically and remind them that there's warm clothing if they want it.

A baby who is too hot is likely to go to sleep, too, so it's not just cold which is dangerous. In fact DS was much more likely to complain when he was too cold than too warm.

I wouldn't as I'd be really cold, but my dh happily would, and our dc would.
People are different.

YANBU to say something. Why on earth do people put their toddlers in thin cotton leggings in winter?? Mine wears padded ski trousers or a snowsuit over her leggings. If it drops below freezing she wears merino wool top and leggings as an underlayer, with a jumper, fleece and coat/snowsuit. It's not difficult to dress a child warmly. Mine always makes a fuss about getting dressed but it's non negotiable, like wearing a hat and sunscreen in summer.

This made me cringe a bit. We took 11 month old DS to a farmer's market last week. He kept removing his gloves so I ended up putting them in my pocket. A man came up to make a fuss of him and kept commenting about the lack of gloves.

DS has a snowsuit with mittens but even those he manages to wiggle his hands free.

Nanny0gg · 28/12/2017 20:56

I’ve lived in countries where the cold can be dangerous. Hats, gloves, snow boots absolutely not optional.

So how do those parents enforce it?

Angie169 · 28/12/2017 21:00

your 12 year old still use's a buggy !

Spikeyball · 28/12/2017 21:05

My 12 year old still uses one. He is disabled.

Maybe have a little think about why that could be? (Preferably before posting)

Confused

Of course they pull them off if they’re not attached to them properly. Get a helmet hat , mittens that are attached to the coat and tights instead of socks (yes, boys too!) .
I’m saying it as someone from much colder country. And for some reason they don’t have “hat/gloves/shoes refusers” there. Maybe because we know how to get babies and toddlers to keep them on?

My mum used to spend hours forcing me into nice warm wooly tights, it wasn't until she saw the prickly heat rash on the back of my knees she understood I was too hot.

PasstheStarmix · 28/12/2017 22:21

How old was the child? I think she has a lot to do with it and if baby is independent enough to fight against the layers. However it doesn't still sound inappropriate because thin leggings should have been thick and coat doesn't sound padded and warm and a cosy toes should have been used on the buggy. Even if child didn't like hate etc there are things the person could have done to keep the child warmer than that.

or maybe because in a much colder country the kids actually need them.

PasstheStarmix · 28/12/2017 22:22

hats

Wineasaurous · 28/12/2017 22:27

@PassiveAgressiveQueen was thinking the same thing

Wineasaurous · 28/12/2017 22:28

When DS is cold he doesn't take his hat off. When he is too warm, he does! It's almost like he's a little person or something...

PasstheStarmix · 28/12/2017 22:28

With ds it's non negotiable. He had thick trousers, socks, thermal soft boots, bodysuit, jumper, thick fleece lined coat with hood, hat and thermal mittens. No gaps and he lovely and snug and he then goes in his buggy complete with fleece lined cosy toes and his little stuffed animals. He's so comfortable he falls right to sleep and naps really well in it.

PasstheStarmix · 28/12/2017 22:28

has

Pumpkinpie657 · 28/12/2017 22:31

Did they have a footmuff? My footmuff said on the box that a baby would be comfortable in it in one layer up to -29C. Seriously.

DeadMorose · 28/12/2017 22:35

Actually, cold in UK feels much worse than in northern countries. I’m assuming it has to do with humidity. 0 here feels like -10 there. And yet, when it’s below +10 in there, the hats go on and it’s non negotiable.
So no, it’s not because “they actually need them there”. They need them here too.
But for some reason people here don’t understand that. Oh well. At least my DCs are dressed according to weather.

Spikeyball · 28/12/2017 22:36

Deadmorose we had those mitten clips with ds but he still managed to bite his mittens off.
