So I got on regional metro train (local network in Newcastle/Tyne and wear).
As I got on the front seat was empty and a women got off.
I sat down and noticed she had left her phone.
I started to knock on the window and show her the phone,I run to the train doors but they close before I can get to her.
She starts swearing and shouting at me to pull the emergency stop break button but I don't.
I know loosing your phone is awful but I thought I would get wrong.
Anyway I shout that I will hand it into lost property at the next stop (5 mins away)
So I get off the train, and do that.
Was ibu to not pull the break?
Tbh once she started swearing at me I lost all sympathy for her.

Thought from your title that you kept it! No, you weren’t wrong at all. A five minute journey to get your phone back is no bother, if she was going nuts about that, she’s rude!

Sparklingbrook · 26/12/2017 13:25

The emergency stop button is not for that scenario. You did the right thing.

Floralnomad · 26/12/2017 13:26

Of course you don’t pull the energency cord for a forgotten phone , I wouldn’t have got off at the next stop either unless that’s where you were getting off originally I’d have just handed it in wherever I alighted .

SnowannaRainbow · 26/12/2017 13:27

YANBU. Having to collect a phone from the next station is not an emergency, you would have been very unreasonable to use the emergency alarm and hold up the train for all the other passengers and probably cause a knock on effect for trains behind, all because of one rude person's carelessness.

Maelstrop · 26/12/2017 13:27

You did the right thing. You get fines for pulling the emergency stop on the Metro, don’t you? She’s bloody lucky you found it and not some scummy thief. She probably only swore cos she was worried about losing it.

Olympiathequeen · 26/12/2017 13:28

You could have ended up with a fine for improper use of the emergency cord.
The woman wouldn’t have paid it I’m sure.
You did the right thing

Pattyjohnson23 · 26/12/2017 13:29

The metro trains run every 11 mins so I didn't mind really getting off and tbh I just wanted rid of it.
She was quite aggressive.

The emergency stop halts the reason for a good half an hour, ime, even if nothing's wrong (thanks for that, dickhead teenagers who thought it would be funny to pull the cord for no reasonas they left the train Hmm ). This then impacts on all the other trains on the line. Had you pulled the cord, you would have inconvenienced hundreds of people for the sake of that phone, which you have left in a safe place.
She wbu. You wnbu.

BlueNeighbourhood1 · 26/12/2017 13:29

Haha if I was on the Metro and delayed for 15 minutes whilst the driver examines every carriage (which has happened many times before), to find out it's because a woman had left her phone, I wouldn't be best pleased.

You definitely did the right thing, and I would imagine it's not even five minutes to the next stop on the Metro!

IJoinedJustToPostThis · 26/12/2017 13:30

Reason should say train...

aaaaargghhhhelpme · 26/12/2017 13:30

Haha I thought from the title you'd kept the phone!!

Hell no. You did the right thing. You even told her where you'd hand it in. Emergency stops are for emergencies. And yeah I'd have lost a bit of sympathy for her too if she swore at me....for that she could pick up her bloody phone from wherever I got off at instead of the next stop

CanIBuffalo · 26/12/2017 13:30

Tbh if she'd kicked off like that I wouldn't have dropped it off at the next stop at all. I'd have waited till my destination and handed it in there.

Pattyjohnson23 · 26/12/2017 13:31

Phew- I'm pleased I used my common sense.
It's not like it was a 3hr train journey it was literally 5 mins away.
Hopefully she got it straight back.
(Might have called her a few swear words in my head)

It’s a £1000 fine isn’t it for improper use of the emergency stop. Nobody was dying or being attacked, the woman simply left her phone behind.

You did the right thing.

Pattyjohnson23 · 26/12/2017 13:32

It was only Gateshead to central station so a couple of mins, maybe 5 -10 walking

You did the right thing.

RavenLG · 26/12/2017 13:33

Yeah you’re defo not BU. The metro stops are barely 30 seconds apart she could have easily jumped on the next one and got it! If you were in Newcastle town centre she probably could have walked from one station to the other quicker than waiting for the next metro too! Silly woman!

harrietsoton · 26/12/2017 13:34

I think you handled it perfectly!

She has a nerve for being so rude. I would have been so greatful that someone would inconvenience themselves to hand it in rather than steal it. She should consider herself lucky that someone else didn’t find it before you did!

RavenLG · 26/12/2017 13:34

Cross post re: stations but really not anything to pull the emergency cord over. It’s not an emergency she can’t look after her belonging

PersianCatLady · 26/12/2017 13:35

A lost phone is not an emergency so you did the right thing.

expatinscotland · 26/12/2017 13:36

YANBU. I wouldn't have got off until it was my stop, either. She's a cow. Emergency stop, for a fucking phone!

LaurieMarlow · 26/12/2017 13:37

I thought you'd kept it too. I was all ready to berate you Grin.

You absolutely did the right thing, the woman's an idiot if she doesn't realise that.

hungryhippo90 · 26/12/2017 13:38

From the title I thought you kept the phone.

When she swore at you I'd have put it back where she left it and had a little smile. I am a bitch though.

Absolutely the right thing to do! When I found one I just dropped it with a staff member when I got off at monument.

Well done on getting the front seat, always an achievement!
