Does you cook with wine for your toddler?

Slightly panicking about dd having beef gravy with red wine yesterday. I have bad anxiety and alcohol is a massive trigger due to my childhood and living with an alcoholic. I would never ever serve food cooked in wine but didn't realise yesterday until it was too late.

Am I overreacting or would you freak out too?

The problem isn't the alcohol, it's your anxiety. Hope you can get the help you need x

missladybird · 26/12/2017 14:28

I'm just annoyed because I'm usually so strict and careful. I should have checked first. Do other toddlers have similar?

I always put a slug of red wine in my Bolognese. Mine are 6 and 3.

WunWun · 26/12/2017 14:32

Can you explain what exactly is worrying you now? It's over and done with, she is fine. What more do you think could happen now?

missladybird · 26/12/2017 14:36

I'm worried because I never wanted to give my child alcohol and now it's happened

OP posts:
WunWun · 26/12/2017 14:40

What are you worried about though?

WunWun · 26/12/2017 14:42

Or are you using the wrong word? Are you feeling a bit guilty about it? Not that I think you need to because it's such a tiny thing, but there's no need to actually worry because there is nothing more that can come from it if she's fine.

CheshireChat · 26/12/2017 14:49

Your child won't have any issues around alcohol because they had a tiny, tiny amount of alcohol when they were a toddler.

Heck, I'm willing to bet that there's quite a few toddler that must've sneaked a sip of actual alcohol and that they were ok (DS managed it with my coffee).

user1485778793 · 26/12/2017 14:52

Is your child ill?

Thought not.

You need to chill out

etap · 26/12/2017 14:56

Fuckin hell calm down and read the responses. Kid will be fine. No harm has come to anyone.

Rossigigi · 26/12/2017 14:58

If it still contained it in food after cooking, it would have a 'don't consume and drive' warning!!

IfyouseeRitaMoreno · 26/12/2017 14:58

Whichever one of your parents was an alcoholic, you are not them.

They constantly and wilfully put you in harm’s way with alcohol around. You’ve not done that with your child. The amount is so minuscule it is not worth a second thought.

Take a deep breath.

It’s all fine.

Your child is fine. They won’t be affected by alcohol.

Give yourself a break. You are a good Mum.

Iolaus84 · 26/12/2017 15:00

My toddler regularly has beef cooked in red wine, it''s dh speciality! The alcohol cooks off.

Bambamber · 26/12/2017 15:01

Your anxiety is twisting this around and not allowing you to think about this rationally.

Giving a toddler a drink of alcohol is unacceptable. You did not do this.

Using alcohol while cooking to add flavour is totally acceptable and normal. Your child will feel no Ill effects and it hasn't done any damage.

FlouncyDoves · 26/12/2017 15:05

You’ve not given them any alcohol as it cooks off when heated.

Pour a glass of proper Pinot for yourself and chill out.

playitnow · 26/12/2017 15:09

The issue isn't the alcohol, it's the re-emergence of your anxiety. What are your strategies for managing your anxiety? If they don't work, see out the help of a health professional.

DoculamentDoculament · 26/12/2017 15:19

You need to see someone about your anxiety. It's that which is more likely to adversely affect your child, not having 2 tablespoons of gravy with a splash of wine in.

Loadedllama · 26/12/2017 15:20

They’ll be absolutely fine. Alcohol burns off when it’s very hot. I used to have an adult sized shot of sherry at my grandparents house every weekend as a child. I’ve never drunk alcohol as an adult because I don’t really like the taste or the effect. I think I remember some of your previous posts Where you have had anxiety about your DC. Sounds like a flare up:( are you getting any support with it at all? It’s a wretched thing. But truly your little one will be totally ok. She hasn’t actually has alcohol only the flavour.

iBiscuit · 26/12/2017 15:20

Kids would be slurping that gravy in the park if there was any meaningful amount of alcohol in it.

Weedsnseeds1 · 26/12/2017 15:23

I calculated for you that the gravy your child consumed contained approx 0.01 - 0.005% alcohol, without even taking into account the effect of heating.
By contrast, bread dough naturally has about 1.5% alcohol in it. Because it's fermented, with yeast. It's then baked and the alcohol evaporates.
Do you fret every time your child eats a sandwich? No. And this is NO DIFFERENT.
Please, please, seek help for your anxiety, it's ruining your life.

britbat23 · 26/12/2017 17:13

The tiny amount of alcohol in that gravy will do absolutely no harm.

However, it is a myth that alcohol easily "cooks out" of everything. Source: www.todayifoundout.com/index.php/2011/11/alcohol-doesnt-really-cook-out-of-food-in-most-cases/

April229 · 26/12/2017 17:39

Huge over reaction.

Get some help before you pass on your panicking to you LO and they believe that something bad has really happened, when it hasn’t.

missladybird · 26/12/2017 17:53

So why is it labelled beef and red wine gravy if it's not like drinking wine?

OP posts:
BenLui · 26/12/2017 18:06

Because the wine is added for flavour.

I make a steak and Guinness pie, it has a whole pint of Guinness in it. Everyone is perfectly safe to drive afterward and the children love it.

I rarely have an alcoholic drink myself but I use it in cooking regularly.
