Taking the tree down!

Elsouth · 25/12/2017 19:28

Is it wrong to consider taking the tree down tomorrow? When is everyone else doing it?? I think last year I did it just after Boxing Day. As the kids get older the presents seem to get bigger and I end up having to rearrange the whole room. Need that tree gone. Does that make me a grinch?

Well I can’t wait to take my £0 to the sales and watch the other people snag some bargains. Highlight of my year actually. Me being super miser and all that.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 25/12/2017 22:06

I love looking at my tree. We put it up a week before Christmas so it can stay fresh until the 6th.

One of the dogs is pissed off because the tree takes up his favourite spot for cat spotting, the other can't be arsed one way or the other.

Mosschopz · 25/12/2017 22:08

Christmas won't finish until 12th night and that's when I'll take our tree down, no matter how much it annoys me. take your time...be mindful...there's only a grey January to look forward to and a few lights here and are cheery.

ihatetosay · 25/12/2017 22:09

half decs already off tonight the tree will go back outside tomorrow it has been up a week
Christmas is over now

ProseccoMamam · 25/12/2017 22:09

Tree goes up Christmas Eve and down on boxing day

Sparklingbrook · 25/12/2017 22:10

Envy at people who have a tree with lights that still work. We have lights around the hearth and in the porch though. They can stay a bit longer.

Whenm

PasstheStarmix · 25/12/2017 22:13

I can't wait to go for a nice walk tomorrow and get some fresh air after being cooked up all day today overeating and drinking!

WantingMuchMore · 25/12/2017 22:14

If i had my way it would go up Christmas eve and come down boxing day but my children tell me i'll get a visit from three ghosts if I carry on with that mlarky. It went up about 15th and will come down at the weekend

HerRoyalNotness · 25/12/2017 22:14

I'll take ours down tomorrow as I'm sick of the needles and it's looking threadbare. I love a fresh tree but have ordered a fake one in the sales for next year

OurMiracle1106 · 25/12/2017 22:18

Mines coming down on 27th. Boxing Day I’m always busy

LEMtheoriginal · 25/12/2017 22:21

Ours went up last weekend and dp and dd put decs up this week only. For lots of reasons my anxiety has been terrible in the run up to Xmas and can now only start to relax. I'm back at work Wednesday off Thursday and back Friday so the tree stays until 12th night. Post Xmas is the best bit. All the stress done and I can chill the fuck out with my dd2

octonaught · 25/12/2017 22:22

I will probably take it down on the 31st. I like the idea of waking up in a clean uncluttered house on the 1st

Goldfishshoals · 25/12/2017 22:23

Well it's obviously 'wrong' to take down the tree before the end of Christmas (12th night), in the sense of not following the tradition correctly, but traditions aren't laws so you can do what you want.

I don't personally cant understand wanting the Christmas period over when it's barely started (it's only 12 days of the year to have a but if decoration up), but each to their own.

PasstheStarmix · 25/12/2017 22:25

Whoah olive I think donny was just joking, chill out

Mummyoflittledragon · 25/12/2017 22:26

Tree goes up just before Christmas so it’s nice and fresh for the day and comes down in the new year. Pretty, sparkly lights are fab to see the new year in. My friend takes hers down Boxing Day. Interesting perspectives on here as to why people choose to do this. I understand a little more why now but not my idea of Christmas.

PasstheStarmix · 25/12/2017 22:26

Personally I don't think it's about being miserable it's about being organised and OCD both of which I am....Confused

AnneElliott · 25/12/2017 22:27

Ours comes down just before we go back to work - so it will be down on 3rd Jan.

Moanranger · 25/12/2017 22:28

12th night here. Ours only went up on 22nd Dec

DonnyAndVladSittingInATree · 25/12/2017 22:29

I didn’t realise you couldn’t go to the sales whilst your tree was still up. You learn something new every day in MNland.

PasstheStarmix · 25/12/2017 22:32

I love getting the decs down and partying on New year then watching all the stressed people clambering to get theirs down before they go back to work while me and dh saunter around town!

Sgtmajormummy · 25/12/2017 22:34

Our 10yo tree with the same tawdry baubles sits on the dining table shedding its plastic needles and getting in the way. It stays for the minimum possible time. It went up on 19th and will probably go away before NYE.
In my experience the kids are bored of it by then and since I'm bored of it before it even comes out of the BOX (!) we can wave it goodbye quite happily.

Elsouth · 25/12/2017 22:35

Brizzledrizzle you're referring to a Squash & a Squeeze! That's currently DS1 bedtime story and that's exactly the case! I just need the space back otherwise I would leave it up. I have two boys 3 and under who like to chase each other around the living room and it's like the walls have been brought in with the tree taking up a corner. And ever since I was little my mom always put the tree up the first weekend of dec until the 12th night. This is the first year I went against that and did it in nov. Admittedly I took it down before NYE last year too.

But could someone actually explain the whole thing behind the 12 days of Christmas and why it's bad luck?! Is it bad luck before or after the 12th day

OP posts:
DonnyAndVladSittingInATree · 25/12/2017 22:38

it’s not bad luck. There is no luck at all associated with your Christmas tree. It’s not magic. Grin

PasstheStarmix · 25/12/2017 22:41

I think the 12 days thing and luck is a load of rubbish. If anything I think it's unlucky to go into the new year with last year's decorations up! You should start a a fresh with them all taken down before new year. You make your own luck and everybody has a diff version...Hmm
