Taking the tree down!

Is it wrong to consider taking the tree down tomorrow? When is everyone else doing it?? I think last year I did it just after Boxing Day. As the kids get older the presents seem to get bigger and I end up having to rearrange the whole room. Need that tree gone. Does that make me a grinch?

Also can I just say I don't think it's about moving from one holiday to the next. I'm not about to go out and buy the Easter eggs...oh wait I did buy a creme egg on Xmas eve eve from the local shop. But I'd buy them all year if I could.
I just like the freshness of a tidy room and January is a new fresh start and DS1 starts pre school and it's all exciting. I'll admit I'm not religious but I'm also not one of those hooked into every consumer thing (elf on a shelf or Xmas eve boxes no thanks) I just really want that damn corner back!!

I've been ill today so we've rescheduled our Christmas until Friday as it is the only day I have off.
I will enjoy the tree and cards until 12th night,we also only put our tree up end of last week.Christmas has only just started and we can relax without having to go shopping for anything else or cook much for the next few days.

kaytee87 · 25/12/2017 22:45

We usually take ours down on 2nd January or whichever date is the day before dh is back to work. (1st & 2nd jan are holidays here). That day we also do a big shop and lots of housework to get everything fresh for the new year.

Sgtmajormummy · 25/12/2017 22:49

My understanding is that 6th December (12th Night) is the end of festivities and it's bad luck to have decorations up AFTER that date.

It's also seen as the (hypothetical) date when the Three Wise Men came to Jesus and warned that King Herod was searching for the baby. This led to the Flight into Egypt to avoid the Slaughter of the Innocent.

Or maybe it's just a pagan ritual.
I've been to a few wild 12th Night Balls in my time...

Goldfishshoals · 25/12/2017 22:49

It's weird though, isn't it, that Christmas seems particularly to attract this competitive 'Im over it before anyone' attitude.

I've never heard of people declaring their 'bored' of Easter by Good Friday, or coming home on the second day of their summer holiday because its tedious now.

Why is 12 days so impossibly long for a few decorations?

PasstheStarmix · 25/12/2017 22:51

Ours are up a month as we put them up on 1st and take them down before new year

Sparklingbrook · 25/12/2017 22:53

Nobody is competing. More agreeing that they would prefer to take their trees down sooner rather than later.

I don't really acknowledge Easter TBH, and you can't compare a summer holiday to your Christmas decorations. Can you? Confused

DonnyAndVladSittingInATree · 25/12/2017 22:55

that Christmas seems particularly to attract this competitive 'Im over it before anyone' attitude.

And dont forget the super snobby, “I do Christmas properly, tree up for the correct number of days, no sales shopping it isn’t commercial for me. No no no.” competitiveness. Wink

DonnyAndVladSittingInATree · 25/12/2017 22:57

I don’t decorate my house for Easter. If I had a giant egg in the corner. (Or life size crucifix for the religiously compliant amongst us) I’d want it gone after a couple of days too.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 25/12/2017 22:57

When Christmas is all about the presents then it makes sense that as soon as they are unpacked the tree comes down.

why12345 · 25/12/2017 22:59

This is so weird to me!! My tree went up mid November and won't come down till next week!! Christmas is a feeling!! Not just a day!!!

Sparklingbrook · 25/12/2017 23:01

Donny to do Easter properly you have to have twigs with eggs hanging on. No idea what the rules are re how long to keep it up for is though.

DonnyAndVladSittingInATree · 25/12/2017 23:03

Oooh thanks sparkling is there a guide on how to celebrate properly? I think I missed this class in school.

Miaow Chardonnay.

DonnyAndVladSittingInATree · 25/12/2017 23:05

My DCs presents were observed at 8am. Tree is still up. Logic fail Chardonnay. Wink perhaps it’s a case of once Christmas is over, the tree comes down. As far as I know there are no more Christmas days this year so I think it’s safe to put the tree away.

DeltaWave · 25/12/2017 23:05

My tree stays up for a month, twinkling away happily in the dark winter evenings. It'll come down the day before I go back to work in the New Year. I pretend I put it up in early December because of DC, but really it's for me too!

Bexta147 · 25/12/2017 23:05

I will take mine down this week. I hate looking at it and if it wasn’t for the kids I wouldn’t have a tree at all! It just makes the whole place look cluttered and untidy and I am the least tidy person in the world. Plus the 1yo has pulled it over more than once so it looks twice as bad as usual.

Sparklingbrook · 25/12/2017 23:06

You have to make one of these then do all the Easter Bunny stuff I think Donny. But it's all about the chocolate obviously. Wink Grin

Taking the tree down!
Carouselfish · 25/12/2017 23:06

When there's more needless off than on.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 25/12/2017 23:07

Why did you think I'm talking about your tree, Donny?

You seem to take everything personality.

Carouselfish · 25/12/2017 23:07

Goldfish MN as a whole is a competition of who's 'over it' first.

DonnyAndVladSittingInATree · 25/12/2017 23:08

Oh you’re talking about your own? No worries.

Sparklingbrook · 25/12/2017 23:08

Wine for all. Let's not have a Christmas tree bunfight on Christmas Day.

honeyroar · 25/12/2017 23:08

Mine won't come down until after New Year (about the 2nd). But I don't have an indoor tree, mine is a real one outside the living room window, so it doesn't take up room. Winter is long and gloomy enough without taking the sparkle down too soon. Just because the TVs adverts have decided Xmas is over I haven't. It's a period of a couple of weeks indulgence and, when not working, relaxation and catching up with people.

Mrscog · 25/12/2017 23:09

We’re the other side of new year here. For us Christmas only really starts Christmas Eve, can’t bear all the earlier hype. But we’re lucky as us and all our family/friends have jobs where everyone is off work all week so from now until 1st Jan is filled with chilling/hosting/visiting Christmas celebration type stuff.

LoniceraJaponica · 25/12/2017 23:09

You can't compare Easter to Christmas. You don't get the interminable build up, relentless pressure, repetitive songs etc. I'm not surprised people want to take their trees down early if they hsve been up for a month.

I prefer to celebrate Christmas at Christmas and not for several weeks beforehand, so our tree goes up the week before at the earliest and down at new year.
