Taking the tree down!

Elsouth · 25/12/2017 19:28

Is it wrong to consider taking the tree down tomorrow? When is everyone else doing it?? I think last year I did it just after Boxing Day. As the kids get older the presents seem to get bigger and I end up having to rearrange the whole room. Need that tree gone. Does that make me a grinch?

I love having the tree up and having gone to all that trouble i’ll be enjoying it as long as possible. It will come down a couple of days after New Year - as it starts feeling a bit wrong once we are back at work / school.

GladAllOver · 01/01/2018 12:28

Easter ( Oestre) is a pagan name. Yet christians use it.
If you are nitpicking you can;t have it both ways.

Yes, absolutely :)

speakout · 01/01/2018 12:38

A christmas tree is not a big thing in the bible - even the nativity has no mention of decorated evergreens.

In fact the bible states ( Jeremiah 10) "2 Thus saith the Lord, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them.

3 For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe.

4 They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not."

Claiming that the christmas tree is only a christian thin is tenuous at best, in fact the bible is actually warning people against such heathn practices as decorated trees.

All down this morning. I get a twinge of sadness putting things away and trepidation aswell as excitement about the year ahead. Still have some fairy lights and candles though. Cooking a nice meal now for us and will enjoy some bubbles as I was Mum's taxi last night.

dontbesillyhenry · 01/01/2018 14:05

New- what part of November is Christmas?

AcrossthePond55 · 01/01/2018 14:46

Ugh. Starts today. It's always such fun to get the Xmas things out and put them up. Not such fun doing the reverse!

DH has gone to Yosemite for two days, camping. So I'm going to just potter around since he isn't here to do the 'heavy lifting'.

Or maybe I'll just say 'fuck it' and let it all stay til he gets home!

HaHaHmm · 01/01/2018 15:17

I am usually a fully paid-up member of the dogmatic 12 Days Brigade but we have got a real dud of a tree this year which has already shed most of its needles despite us doing absolutely everything one is supposed to do to prolong its life, so it is coming down today. I was feeling a bit guilty about it until I saw that my friend, who happens to be a vicar's wife, is taking down the tree in the vicarage today...

mizu · 01/01/2018 18:43

I usually take it down today but for once want to keep it up a bit longer as it is so cute [ fgrin]

It is quite squat and a lovely shape, we don't put up a tree until we break up, this year was 21st December so I reckon a couple more days.

jaimelannistersgoldenhand · 01/01/2018 18:57

I take mine down to coincide with bin day as they take away Xmas trees here.

TheOrigRightsofwomen · 02/01/2018 02:55

dontbe the first Sunday of advent can be in November.

TheOrigRightsofwomen · 02/01/2018 06:59

I try and wait until 12th night because it was something my mum (who is no longer here) felt strongly about, and I like the values it goes along with (not rushing on to the next exciting event but enjoining this period).

Sodding needles driving me batty though!!

LazyDailyMailJournos · 02/01/2018 08:23

This thread is Mumsnet at its absolute best; batshittery and passive aggressive responses, all interspersed with slightly baffled people who try to inject some normality into things...

And Julie. Dear, dear, bonkers Julie, with her desperate wish for a Christmas tree law and fines for those who flout it (what about artificial Christmas trees? How will you know?), and her sympathy for those not celebrating the full 12 days of Christmas. When did busily chastising strangers on the internet become a feature of the festival?

Grin

Normally our tree goes up on Christmas Eve and comes down on NYD. But we didn't have one this year.

AuntieStella · 02/01/2018 08:39

"When did busily chastising strangers on the internet become a feature of the festival?"

As soon as chat rooms existed?

This isn't Mn at it's best, it's MN at it's most predictable.

At least it's been only one thread this year instead of the multiple ones there often are about decorations

kitnkaboodle · 02/01/2018 09:05

I concede - coming down today. We had a lovely cosy new year's day yesterday but now even I would struggle to feast for another 3-4 days! And the tree's had it. Also just realised- thanks MN- that my celebratory period is actually Yule, from the solstice to New Year. Never knew I was a pagan before! Xmas Smile

juliesaway · 02/01/2018 11:32

It’s only the 8th day of Christmas! Xmas Smile

LazyDailyMailJournos · 02/01/2018 11:49

Touche! Grin

I am surprised to see you on here Julie. I would have thought that you'd be busy talking to haranguing your neighbours - and carrying out appropriate inspections of pavements and back gardens, natch - to ensure that Christmas Standards Are Upheld?

juliesaway · 02/01/2018 12:03

It’s been a long day so I’ve finished patrolling people’s living rooms for today and door knocking to check there’s been no shirking and they still have their decorations up. 4 days of Christmas celebration 🍾🎄still to come 🎄😘☀️

LazyDailyMailJournos · 02/01/2018 12:14

Glad to hear that standards are being maintained Julie; those Christmas Trees won't inspect themselves! If your day is drawing to a close then I assume you aren't in the UK?

GoingRogue · 02/01/2018 12:30

Loving the banter on here! You're a good egg Julie Grin

Jaimx86 · 02/01/2018 12:40

We've taken our two artificial ones down this morning (took over two hours!) , but will leave the real one up until the twelfth night.

Newyearnewyew · 02/01/2018 12:55

closes curtains a little to avoid the Julies of this worlds gaze.
My tree down and room all fresh and emptied.
Sometimes stays up till mid november sometimes not

user1469573918 · 02/01/2018 15:17

Being a bit of a clean freak I need mine down now lol

LazyDailyMailJournos · 02/01/2018 15:21

I must admit I am slightly drawn to the tradition of keeping decs up until the 5th/6th. But going back to work tends to ruin whatever remaining festive spirit I have!

catgirl1976 · 02/01/2018 15:25

Mines gone this morning

Enjoying having the space back and not re-hanging ll the baubles the cat knocks off

AcrossthePond55 · 02/01/2018 15:49

99.9% done! Tree gone, decs packed away and awaiting DH to take the boxes upstairs to the storage room when he gets back. All that's left is take the Xmas china out of the china cabinet, box it up, and put it in the cupboard.

Does anyone else's rooms seem to look empty and a bit bigger without all the Xmas decorations?
