Taking the tree down!

Is it wrong to consider taking the tree down tomorrow? When is everyone else doing it?? I think last year I did it just after Boxing Day. As the kids get older the presents seem to get bigger and I end up having to rearrange the whole room. Need that tree gone. Does that make me a grinch?

yumyumpoppycat · 29/12/2017 22:26

I would like to take the decs down before midnight on 12th night and maybe eat chocs and watch a Christmas movie beforehand but dp can't cope with leaving things until the last minute. He prefers advent/Christmas and is usually sick of mince pies and Christmas music before Christmas eve! It's a bit annoying tbh but we end up somewhere in the middle where I put the decs up a bit later than he would like and take them down earlier than I would like. This year dds go back on 3rd of jan but ds is still off so I will take them down then. We went to a panto today and really enjoyed it but it didn't feel as christmasy as I suspect it would have if we had seen it before Christmas day.

morningconstitutional2017 · 30/12/2017 08:59

Mine will be thrown back into the cupboard under the stairs before 12th night, basically when I get round to it. This Christmas has been blighted by that horrible virus that seems to have caught almost everyone so it'll get done when I regain some energy.

TheOrigFV45 · 30/12/2017 10:48

12th night for us. It went up a week before Xmas and still looks lovely (real tree). Not many people keep their decs up till 12th night these days and I feel as if people might think I'm just lazy (which I am not!).

LillianGish · 30/12/2017 10:48

Only on Mumsnet - months and months of discussion about preparations for Christmas, Christmas Eve boxes and elves on shelves then when Christmas actually arrives a huge hurry a fuss to get it all over with and back to normal. I think if you have kids then the Christmas holidays should definitely be spent in the twinkle of Christmas lights and the scent of fir tree, watching films, playing board games and eating chocolate. Clear it away when they go back to school. Did posters who made the whole deal about Christmas pyjamas for Christmas Eve pack them away after Christmas Day as well?

cathf · 30/12/2017 12:35

Lilly am, I tend to agree.
Leaving the tree up just makes the whole thing more relaxing and less commercialised somehow.

Bluntness100 · 30/12/2017 12:37

Just taken mine down this morning. Looks a bit bare without it...,

KitKat1985 · 30/12/2017 13:44

Took my tree down this morning. I always think there's something a bit depressing about Christmas decorations after Christmas as it's a bit of reminder that it's all over. We need the space back anyway to make room for all the tat presents that the DDs got this year.

juliesaway · 30/12/2017 13:55

The thing is it’s not over “after Christmas”. Christmas STARTS on 25th December, not ends!! Why be depressed that something has ended when in fact it’s just started? Weird!

cathf · 30/12/2017 13:59

Julie's, I don't think you are going to get anyone to agree with you by being rude as you have upthread.
Just accept people don't agree with you. You might think they are wrong but it's their perogative to celebrate Christmas however they like, is it not?

MissWimpyDimple · 30/12/2017 14:01

If ours make it to nye it's a miracle. I'm doing Monday this year as it fits with what's happening.

Love that feeling of space when all the tat has gone

KitKat1985 · 30/12/2017 15:08

Well my personal take Juliesaway is that I like to start afresh at the start of the New Year, which in my mind means getting the house tidy and back to normal, and clear of all the Christmas clutter. And I'm afraid my Christmas spirit has been eroded this week as I've been working as normal (I'm a nurse) and it's been a particularly busy week on the ward with some very unwell patients and a lot of admissions, which hasn't been helped by half the ward staff being off either on annual leave or off sick, so I've been doing extra hours (unpaid) just to keep on top of things. So honestly I'm quite looking forward to the return to normality.

Natsku · 30/12/2017 15:22

On Epithany (12th night) so long as it's not looking too brown and miserable before then (real tree). DD doesn't go back to school until the 8th so nice to keep most of her holiday festive.

RidingWindhorses · 30/12/2017 15:47

Just accept people don't agree with you.

But Julie in her 13.55 post is actually correct. People can choose to celebrate Christmas how and when they like, but if they disagree that technically Christmas starts on the 25th and ends at twelfth night then they are just wrong. Although they don't have to celebrate it like that.

In France and other European countries on 12th night you have a Galette des Rois which marks the end of Christmas.

That's a little bit tragic given that no-one gives a shit. I certainly don't feel like my celebrations are being 'policed'. Didn't even cross my mind tbh.

Justneedsomesleepnow · 30/12/2017 16:11

Everything taken down yesterday!

FixItUpChappie · 30/12/2017 16:25

Tree went down yesterday but we are still lounging around in pjs eating Christmas bits and watching movies. For me Christmas season is over when we go back to work/daycare/school on the 2nd and I like to have everything fresh, cleaned up and organized for the new year.

MsHarry · 30/12/2017 16:39

Still all up here. We are all still off work so still in the bubble. Will take down on 1st or 2nd most probably.

Evelynismyformerspyname · 30/12/2017 17:11

Riding though traditionally in France, as in most of Europe (and I think most Scandinavian countries, certainly Sweden) Christmas starts on 24th, not 25th.

In fact I suspect it's just the English speaking world that starts on 25th instead of 24th...

In Germany 24th is referred to as "2nd Christmas day". Traditional present opening is the afternoon of 24th in a lot of Europe, including France and Spain.

Evelynismyformerspyname · 30/12/2017 17:11

Sorry 25th is 2nd Christmas day

RidingWindhorses · 30/12/2017 17:30

To be fair I think a lot of British consider Christmas to start on Christmas Eve, I know I do, it's simply that Christmas Day is trad 'the first day of Christmas'.

dinosaursandtea · 30/12/2017 17:33

Just lugged the tree out - drooping, scratchy bugger that it is now. With the lamps we got from the PILs for Christmas and repurposing the fairylights to be draped around the window, it looks like heaven.

MsHarry · 30/12/2017 17:34

I think it's because in this country(UK) the build up starts in November. Restaurants and pubs take bookings for 25th( in Sept sometimes) and ads and shops etc get on the bandwagon. Then on Boxing day it's all holiday ads. Mentally people are being told to move on. It's shame really because if we start Christmas well into Dec I feel I enjoy the whole period more. People who start in November must be truly sick of it by 26th.

TheGonnagle · 30/12/2017 17:43

All the random bits came down today. The tree will come down on 2nd December, ready to go back to school on 3rd.
