Taking the tree down!

Elsouth · 25/12/2017 19:28

Is it wrong to consider taking the tree down tomorrow? When is everyone else doing it?? I think last year I did it just after Boxing Day. As the kids get older the presents seem to get bigger and I end up having to rearrange the whole room. Need that tree gone. Does that make me a grinch?

Well, when every home has a garden, then perhaps your idea would work as the norm sparkling

When it's terraces, many divided into flats, there are simply no gardens and yes lots of trees left on pavements.

If you're packing away an artificial tree for next year, then obviously no impact. If using kerbside recycling then yes it makes sense to fit in with collection dates.

Sparklingbrook · 26/12/2017 12:23

Maybe RancidOldHag, they could take it down and put it anywhere really if there's no garden.

I have never seen trees left on pavements but there's quite a few places around here you can take the trees to without waiting for the council to pick them up.

noeffingidea · 26/12/2017 12:27

juliesaway is surely trolling by now?
Just in case you're genuinely this batshit crazy, we have an artificial tree and it goes back in the cupboard. Whenever I feel like it, and it'll come back out whenever I feel like it.
We will celebrate christmas however we see fit, just as everyone is free to do. If that makes you feel sad, depressed, disgusted then ... oh well.

Sparklingbrook · 26/12/2017 12:30

I have no idea now noeffing, I didn't realise how long you keep your tree up could become the new hot topic on MN. But makes a change from P&C spaces/prams on the bus/reclining seats on planes and cat poo in the garden (if you have a garden obviously Wink).

cathf · 26/12/2017 12:38

This is an interesting question I think. To me, it signifies the way we build something up for weeks in advance, and the as soon as it is over, want to rush on to the next thing.
Christmas trees go up so early now, I am not surprised that people are sick if the sight of them by today.

Sparklingbrook · 26/12/2017 12:43

But there is no 'next thing'. Some people on the thread taking them down today have only had them up since last week so they aren't sick of the sight of them.

The 'next thing; for me is having the living room straight and tidy again, and the cat not leaping into the tree.

juliesaway · 26/12/2017 12:46

The question is, why have people started putting up their trees earlier and earlier? Even 5 or 6 years ago it was exceptionally unusual (and even a bit of a joke ) to see someone in the neighbourhood with a tree up before the start of December. It’s now increasingly common to see trees up in the last full week of November. Almost as if it’s a competition led by the earliest? Not sure how this started. Others must have noticed this trend too, I can’t be the only one.

Parker231 · 26/12/2017 12:47

WE celebrate the 12 days of Christmas but they are the 12 days leading up to Christmas rather than until 6 January! More fun that way !

cathf · 26/12/2017 12:51

Oh I know what you mean Sparkling, believe me. We put outs up last weekend and I am very happy when it's taken down, usually before 12th night.
To me, it just seems more slow and relaxed somehow than binning Christmas off the next day and starting the countdown to summer holidays, as one of my FB friends has done todayShock

noeffingidea · 26/12/2017 13:16

juliesaway no, the question is, why do you care what other people do with their own christmas trees in their own homes.
Just fyi, a woman I knew put her tree up in November, and that was 25 years ago. I only know because I was in her house at the time. I have absolutely no idea why she put it up so early, and furthermore I don't care.

PassiveAgressiveQueen · 26/12/2017 13:26

To the people who took the tree down because your house was small, did you take wall and window decorations down as well, or just the bulky tree?

DonnyAndVladSittingInATree · 26/12/2017 13:29

WOW!!!

People really get offended by what others do in their own living rooms. I seriously cant imagine being that emotionally affected by someone else’s tree. Maybe I have too much of a life to be getting on with.

Btw there are so many things in our society that are a symbol of immorality and disgusting. Tidying your living room isn’t one of them. You sound like a complete idiot when you say silly things like that.

Praisebe · 26/12/2017 13:32

Im leaving mine up the cat has taken residence in it and it would be rude to stop her Grin plus i can sit with a cup of tea and watch her destroy it GrinBrew

PasstheStarmix · 26/12/2017 13:41

PassiveAgressiveQueen Why does it matter?

PasstheStarmix · 26/12/2017 13:42

DonnyAndVladSittingInATree Completely agree, it's crazy that people care so much about what others do.

PasstheStarmix · 26/12/2017 13:43

Haha Praisebe it sounds like resident pussycat is saving you a job!

GingerIvy · 26/12/2017 13:52

We have ours up for a long time. It goes up by mid-November as the dcs have autism, and this way by the 1st of December, they are "used" to it being there. Then it comes down after 12th night. Thank goodness for artificial trees.

Doesn't bother me a bit - I like Christmas trees.Xmas Grin

stargirl1701 · 26/12/2017 13:53

Ours went up on Christmas Eve. It'll be down on Twelfth Night. It never feels too long to me.

midnightmisssuki · 26/12/2017 13:54

12th night. Just a tradition in my family. We've had it up since 1st december.

Praisebe · 26/12/2017 14:01
