To be freaked out by the buffet?

BornInSydneyy · 22/12/2017 16:01

We had a huge buffet at work today (last day today) and as my colleague who sits next to me was away all the food was placed on his desk.

I hate buffets really, just the smell is enough to make me feel sick. The team descended on it like a pack of hyenas.

People started plating their food up on my actual desk whilst I was trying to work ... food wrappers being left, cutting bread next to my hand on my mouse, leaving crumbs, piling dip on their plate on my desk.

Aibu to think it’s gross to be doing that and felt like my personal space was invaded?

I did snap eventually and told them to stop it.

This is interesting. One of the first replies was along the lines of "why didn't you TUCK IN" (my capitals) like an excite naughty school boy. Food is generally available in supermarkets and other outlets. there is no reason to believe the people being given the food cannot afford it at home, so why the actual fuck would a grown adult be excited about being given food?

I certainly wouldn't want to eat like that, but if I did, I can do it any time I want, just go to the shops, buy it, eat it anywhere I want (without inconveniencing or grossing out others). To coin a phrase "What's the problem?" usually followed by LOL. Hmm

Fluffyear · 22/12/2017 17:39

YANBU OP. I hate work buffets with a passion. After witnessing someone pick their cold sore whilst stood in the que and then go on to pick up and put down food with the same hand, I could no longer partake.
I was always the freak who would just be ‘sticking to my diet’ or some other lame excuse and always eat my own food! Fucking grim!

Ta1kinPeace · 22/12/2017 17:41

(1) You are being a misery guts
(2) work buffets are grim

so nod and smile and do not eat, but do not complain

BornInSydneyy · 22/12/2017 17:42

I think this aibu is a bit pointless as most people don’t seem to get the issue ..

It wasn’t that there was a buffet next to me. Or a buffet at all. It’s the fact that people thought it was ok to leave rubbish, crumbs, blobs of dip, slice up bread and cheese on my desk whilst I’m sat there ... does anyone really want to be using their mouse whilst someone is slicing up bread with a large knife next to their hand?

You said this in your OP.

Doesn't really correlate with your later claims that it was just the rubbish winding up on your desk that was the issue.

I get that totally.

What I don't get is why you're asking if you're being unreasonable, not to want all that on the desk you're working on? Confused

It's a no brainer.

00100001 · 22/12/2017 17:46

Why were you being such a miserable bag and working?

Even if you don't partake in the buffet, still can have a chinwag and a drink.

Why be a martyr?? Xmas Confused

WorraLiberty · 22/12/2017 17:50

Should've had a cheese and to martyr sandwich, OP.

JingsMahBucket · 22/12/2017 17:51

00100001 read the OP's posts. She said that it wasn't a full party. People were just meant to take food and then head back to their desks to keep working.

BornInSydneyy I get it. Coworkers were being gross and disrespectful at your desk. YANBU. I also would have told them to shove along.

MrsGrindah · 22/12/2017 17:53

Why didn’t you say anything?! You could have said in a jokey manner “Oy you mucky bugger! Don’t leave your crisp droppings on my desk!”

BornInSydneyy · 22/12/2017 17:53

Why am I a misery bag? It was literally a get up and eat and carry on working type of situation.

No one was “chinwagging”

I personally don’t feel the need to elbow my way through 12 people to get a chicken nugget.

Other people were working. It was NOT an office party.

I can't see why you didn't say at the time? Oy, stay away from my desk with your filthy crumbs?

You did make me laugh at the dancing sausages though :)

lazymum99 · 22/12/2017 17:54

Eh?? Why on earth not. I don't think I know anyone who doesn't find being given food exciting. How odd.

Take food and then carry on working? It doesn't sound like a very fun place to work does it? UABU to work in such a miserable place.

BarbaraofSevillle · 22/12/2017 17:59

So much snobbery and misery on this thread. The OP didn't say anything about it being a beige buffet.

We get our work catering from a naice deli, not a beige thing in sight. Lovely mini sandwiches, marinaded chicken breast (no skin or breadcrumbs), posh crisps, good salads, macarons, mini cheesecakes, all lovely.

No-one expects offices to work hard at it at this time of year - time to relax a bit.

52FestiveRoad · 22/12/2017 18:01

So why did you not say something when it was being set up? I don't see what the people eating from the buffet did wrong really, they just ate from the buffet, the fact that you did not like it near your desk is not their fault.

ButchyRestingFace · 22/12/2017 18:02

Don't knock it until you've tried it.*

The judging on this thread over a bit of food being eaten by some people is hilarious Xmas Grin

Now I know why the OP's asking such a stupid question Xmas Grin
