To be freaked out by the buffet?

We had a huge buffet at work today (last day today) and as my colleague who sits next to me was away all the food was placed on his desk.

I hate buffets really, just the smell is enough to make me feel sick. The team descended on it like a pack of hyenas.

People started plating their food up on my actual desk whilst I was trying to work ... food wrappers being left, cutting bread next to my hand on my mouse, leaving crumbs, piling dip on their plate on my desk.

Aibu to think it’s gross to be doing that and felt like my personal space was invaded?

I did snap eventually and told them to stop it.

Yabu to call it a buffet. It is clearly a FUDDLE!

PeapodBurgundy · 22/12/2017 16:45

I like a buffet, but a decent one. Nice salads that are more than lettuce, tomato and cucumber, pasta and rice dishes, non-sweaty cheeses, breads, flans and quiches I'm in no way drooling as I type. I'd still not have been chuffed at it being dished up partially on my desk if I was opting out. Not sure why a spare table couldn't have been found, or it couldn't have been put elswhere if you weren't wishing to partake.

stickytoffeevodka · 22/12/2017 16:47

I would definitely not be working if there was free food next to my desk!

Ta1kinPeace · 22/12/2017 16:47

I wonder if they all washed their hands before diving in Xmas Grin

I find buffets remarkably easy to handle on a fast day Xmas Wink

They shouldn't have been doing it on your desk but why were you working?

My team had a buffet this week. Everyone has work to do but it's a social event to mark Christmas. If someone sat there continuing to work and tutting, I'd find that really rude.

froshiechipandbrickie · 22/12/2017 16:51

I like buffets (because I can choose how much / what I want to eat...)

But yes, definitely not on my desk. But why didn’t you join them?

PiffleandWiffle · 22/12/2017 16:54

Why were you trying to work and not tucking in with everyone else Xmas Hmm? It's Christmas, enjoy yourself!

This!! Although if you're the office swot they may have done it deliberately to wind you up... Grin

Vitalogy · 22/12/2017 17:07

Work is not as important as food.

lazymum99 · 22/12/2017 17:11

It is a proven scientific fact that something weird happens to our brains when confronted by buffets! (or it may be my excuse for balancing as much food as possible on a plate).
However, left over buffet food being brought out day after day is an accident waiting to happen.
YABU as you should have built a wall of files etc round your desk to mark out your private space.

JingsMahBucket · 22/12/2017 17:15

What happened after you snapped and told them to move it, OP? I don't blame you TBH as what they were doing was pretty gross and weird.

Laiste · 22/12/2017 17:18

I'm waiting for the ''AIBU to think a work colleague was being very awkward by being grumpy and snappy and making a performance of 'trying to work' while the office Christmas buffet was going on'' Grin

OP at face value your post sounds as if you were being a PITA. The style of food is irellevant really. Sorry.

Tragicboozyflaccidclown · 22/12/2017 17:19

You had a prime buffet position and you wasted it with your huffing. You are so unreasonable

Rudgie47 · 22/12/2017 17:20

I dont like buffets either as they are usually really cheap shitty food, like economy sausage rolls, watery vol au vents and Sarah lee Gateaus. All bought from places like Chavland.
I find it strange though that you just worked through an office party. If I didnt want to participate I would have asked to work from home or in another part of the office etc.

This. I would not have looked a gift buffet in the mouth.

Beltane18 · 22/12/2017 17:29

ugh grim

I feel for you.

BornInSydneyy · 22/12/2017 17:29

It’s not the buffet I had an issue with, it’s the physically placing their food on MY desk, leaving empty wrappers, cutting up bread on my desk. Not on the buffet table, on MY desk.

I don’t want crisp and bread crumbs left on my desk and me to clean up.

Undercoverbanana · 22/12/2017 17:30

Well you must be fun to work with.

The chance to not work and eat instead? Let me in.

BornInSydneyy · 22/12/2017 17:31

It wasn’t an office party Grin ... I wasn’t sat there working with people dancing around me eating sausage rolls.

It was just a get up and help yourself to food whilst carrying on your normal working day.

I agree, that sounds rather annoying.

Cambionome · 22/12/2017 17:33

I think you are totally overreacting tbh.
Do you have food related issues?

classicchristmas · 22/12/2017 17:34

Sounds great to me, you could just sit and chomp and not have to move a muscle, what's not to love!

Weebo · 22/12/2017 17:35

It's really not worth looking like the office misery guts over a few crumbs.

It takes a moment to clear up.

phoenix1973 · 22/12/2017 17:37

Oh god im now reminiscing about the buffets we had at my old company. Amazing. I got loads. Still warm, delicious sausage rolls, crunchy chicken goujons, sliced, buttered french stick so soft with sliced meats separate. Egg mayo on soft brown bread cut into small triangles and fruit platters.......god i miss them so much. It's all i miss 😂
Yanbu about them messing up your desk though. Id hate that too.

Fellia · 22/12/2017 17:38

Sorry OP but this made me laugh 😂
