Came across this article in the Mirror just now (Sorry, it's another Meghan one) where she says Prince Michael of Kent wore a 'racist' brooch when meeting her.

www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/meghan-markle-greeted-racist-jewellery-11736477

General consensus from the comments suggest she knew exactly what she was doing. I don't know anything about her to know if it's suspect but it seems an odd thing to own let alone wear in public. What's the jury?

Also, is Michael an actual name for a woman, I've never heard of it before

I do recall Poncess Michael opening a motorway Happy Eater back in the day, I think.

Eltonjohnssyrup · 23/12/2017 00:34

I meant in a Man Utd top. I should probably go to bed.

Eltonjohnssyrup · 23/12/2017 00:35

There have been rumours about her and 'happy eating'. Ahem. Cough. Saudis.

frieda909 · 23/12/2017 00:36

Flowerpot it’s an exoticised caricature of a black person essentially playing ‘dress-up’ in royal clothing and jewels. Can you perhaps see why people don’t think it’s an appropriate thing to wear on this occasion?

VladmirsPoutine · 23/12/2017 00:38

Elton you'd have to acquire the passive naiveté form as seen above. Lay your bait attentively, frame it as an innocent invite to sensible discussion. Plead your desire for knowledge and welcome a plurality of views with great fervour. Wait a bit, then once you've latched on to an unsuspecting genuine response release a diatribe defending the indefensible.
Perhaps you could apply for an apprenticeship whilst you learn the ropes.

Viviennemary · 23/12/2017 00:39

It has been explained now at length why the brooch is offensive. It was an idiotic thing to wear by anyone even with half a brain cell and I said it early in the thread it was awful. . But I honestly now don't think Princess Pushy looked in her jewellery box and said I'll wear this to offend Meghan M. For a start Princess Pushy wouldn't be wearing her coat during the meal and the chances are it was unlikely that Meghan Markle would even have seen the brooch or even knew she was wearing it. But she does now.

Paul Burrell said that Princess Di got so pissed off with Princess Michael's Burmese cats coming in through her windows and pissing on the floor she trapped them in boxes and took them to Battersea to be rehomed.

That often makes me think Princess Di would have been a passionate Mumsnetter on the cat shit threads had she lived. God rest her soul.

LineyRunner · 23/12/2017 00:51

So Poncess Michael is now 'distressed and sorry' about her 'faux pas', apparently.

SenecaFalls · 23/12/2017 00:52

do they really curtsey to each other?!

No, they don't. The HRHs don't curtsey to each other in public or private. Google Youtube videos of royal gatherings. The reason that Anne told Diana that she didn't want her to curtsey to Anne was that Diana was no longer HRH.

The order of precedence has more to do with the order in which they process on ceremonial occasions.

The brooch made the national evening news in the US tonight. As you can probably imagine, blackamoor jewelry has a deeply racist connotation in the US, especially in the South where I live.

Eltonjohnssyrup · 23/12/2017 00:53

Her son is a massive coke head.

No they bloody do! When they go into the room at Balmoral or Sandringham they process in like that. Honestly.

Have a read of a few Diana biographies. It's part of the reason she went so nuts. At Balmoral in the 80s women had to change clothes about six times in a day just for normal formalities like dinner, breakfast, shooting etc.

Curtsying is totally something they do at things like family dinner.

Battleax · 23/12/2017 01:06

Freddie does always look like a reanimated corpse. Not exactly a clean living look to him.

southboundagain · 23/12/2017 01:17

Oh god, I'm so stupid - it never occurred to me that wasn't her actual name. I just always assumed Michael for a woman was something I wasn't posh enough to understand, like Lettice.

SenecaFalls · 23/12/2017 01:25

Prince Michael of Kent is also a cousin of Prince Philip as well as of the Queen. Prince Michael's mother, Marina, was a princess of Greece and a first cousin to Philip.

LineyRunner · 23/12/2017 01:27

Michael Learned was Olivia Walton.

LineyRunner · 23/12/2017 01:28

Though always styled 'Miss Michael Learned'.

juliesaway · 23/12/2017 04:18

Agree with pp who said the royals are so out of touch you could believe she didn’t realise. I certainly can. People don’t realise how out of touch they really are despite the pr fluff

Thesecondtoast · 23/12/2017 04:32

If you were a royal with a nazi father would you not be a little more careful than most to avoid racial slurs? Totally intentional.

thornyhousewife · 23/12/2017 04:44

I wonder what MM thinks about Harry's Nazi Halloween costume?

BalloonSlayer · 23/12/2017 05:28

As a story meant to make us dislike PMOK even more all it does it make me think Diana was nasty and deranged. Those poor cats!

Battleax · 23/12/2017 05:32

She wasn't really an animal person was she? Diana, I mean. Other than refusing to shoot them.

MissionItsPossible · 23/12/2017 06:25

After reading through this I hope she is struck off the wedding list. A public shun seems like it would be devestating, if previous posters claims of her being grabby and pushy and always wanting to be in the limelight are to be believed.

I think PMoK must be pretty thick skinned TBH.
