To think Poundland ad is not “genius” and is actually a bit I appropriate?

Most comments on Facebook are proclaiming it “genius.” I don’t think a sexual innuendo is that genius TBF.

Plus why is it a woman lying on her back with a t shirt saying “power” and a man standing over her dominating her. They could have at least chosen another sexual innuendo.

Also difficult to explain to kids.

Or have I got the wrong end of the stick?

What is teabagging?.

Scoobygang7 · 21/12/2017 18:07

He could have at least been wearing a chief helmet to give a head nod to where the proflic use of tea bagging for a joke came from. We have halo to thank for that.

clumsyduck · 21/12/2017 18:09

I think some posters don't get the innuendo behind it

I'm the least prudey person I know but I think this advert is way off !!

Beltane18 · 21/12/2017 18:13

imagine you don't know what teabagging is though

what does it look like then? Surely without knowledge it's obviously - woman, your place is on your back with your gob stopped up?

DeleteOrDecay · 21/12/2017 18:16

Of course oral can be consensual, but I've always understood teabagging to be something that's done to show dominance, often on someone who is asleep or passed out.

Yes this was my understanding of it too. There were lots of parties back in my youth where if someone (Male or female) fell asleep or passed at said party out then you may or may not get tea bagged and even if you didn't people would say that you did to shit you up. Lovely.

Dustysparrow · 21/12/2017 18:18

This ad looks like it was thought up by a 15 year old boy. It's juvenile, lazy humour and not even funny.

Did it never occur to Poundland that Twinings might get the hump about this?? How stupid can you get. I hope they have good lawyers....

froshiechipandbrickie · 21/12/2017 18:20

First time I’ve heard of this and I don’t think I’ve had a particularly sheltered upbringing. I’ll have to ask DH if he’s ever heard of this.

Where the hell did you frequent? You hung around with some right charmers there!
Tons of parties and clubbing when younger and nothing like that.

badluckbathroom · 21/12/2017 18:22

Well, it's not funny. And in the current climate I suspect someone may get into a lot of trouble for this.

Yeahsureokay · 21/12/2017 18:22

Kimlek that's just one definition pulled from the top of google, wiki I think it was. Those in the know (I have no idea how else to phrase that sorry!) generally associate teabagging with being a dominating/humiliating act. If you type teabagging and humiliation and domination into google you will happen upon a whole new world. Happy keyboarding

I think the act itself is fine by the way, with two consenting adults. I'm no prude. In the context of this advert however, I find it wholly distasteful and abhorrent.

At least make things fair and have a sexually inappropriate naughty Elf/Ken scenario but you won't will you Poundland

DeleteOrDecay · 21/12/2017 18:23

It wasn't every party. Mainly a certain group, who needless to say I haven't seen in 10 years but it is definitely a thing. Maybe not a widespread 'everyone's doing it' thing but it definitely happens.

PumpkinSquash · 21/12/2017 18:25

How do you know Barbie didn't consent? It might have been her idea.

BarbarianMum · 21/12/2017 18:27

Yeah, her pose is the very epitamy of enthusiastic consent. Hmm

OnionKnight · 21/12/2017 18:27

How many lines did the advertising intern snort whilst making this?

It's pretty cringe and not at all funny.

BertrandRussell · 21/12/2017 18:28

It's interesting how many women (me included-i went back and edited myself) feel they can't object to a degrading and pornified depiction of women without saying something self deprecating about themselves or their sense of humour...

Yeahsureokay · 21/12/2017 18:29

How do you know she did Pumpkin ?

Personally when I'm having a good time I'm not laid rigid with my arms stuck to my side. Maybe that's their thing though.

The point is you don't know pumpkin, and that's the context that's missing I guess.

delete we went to the same kind of parties....

IamalsoSpartacus · 21/12/2017 18:35

badluck, the campaign is being robustly defended by Poundland - the Mirror picked up the story and the spokesman for the store is standing by it. It's not a rogue campaign, and that's why I'll take the massive twenty quid or so I spend there each month elsewhere. It won't make any difference, I'm sure, but I'm not giving my money to an organisation that thinks this campaign is appropriate. It's not just this one photo, there's been a series but this is the worst.

Brazenhussy0 · 21/12/2017 18:37

As far as I can see its "funny" because its an image of a female (doll) wearing a feminist slogan being sexually degraded by a male (doll). Merry Misogynistic Christmas!

^This.

Non-funny, brainless, offensive, misogynistic, juvenile, etc.
The fact so many people (particularly men) are defending it is utterly depressing.

froshiechipandbrickie · 21/12/2017 18:38

Delete dh apparently did as well. But he luckily still likes consensual teabagging 😉

hackmum · 21/12/2017 18:40

At best it's really unpleasant and at worst it's glorifying the sexual degradation of women. And it's an add for a mainstream retailer - the ad has absolutely nothing to do with the product.

SmileChuck · 21/12/2017 18:41

That's vile.
Fuck off Poundland.

Mooey89 · 21/12/2017 18:42

With the tag line ‘spot the difference’

To think Poundland ad is not “genius” and is actually a bit I appropriate?
SmileChuck · 21/12/2017 18:43

She's not consenting.
Can't believe im discussing a doll but ffs lying on her back, she looks drugged.

Ffs Poundland. Be better.
